There have been several posts on the budget board about New York this last few months. So I thought I would ask here- we are taking the SIF to the subway to get to Times square and so on, for a walking tour of Manhattan. I mapped it out on a walking link I found here. We will walk about 6 miles when it's all said and done.

Of course the two year old can't go that far so and we don't want to carry his 30 lb body in the summer time heat and humidity after his little legs give out :rolleyes1 .

My question is if we can leave him in the stroller to board the ferry and the subway, AND if we carry him, are folded strollers allowed on buses we it's raining and we need to go that route? :3dglasses

Thanks for all of your help! :dance3:

I saw lots of strollers when I was there last week. Most people just tilted the stroller on it's wheels and hopped on and off the escalators with everyone else. You may want to avoid rush hour! Just be prepared - if the escalators are broken you'll either need to detour to an elevator (I'm not sure if they have these at every stop?) or carry the child and stroller. I saw lots of parents on the subways having to carry their strollers when this happened.

Yup, we've done it. My advice is to bring only an umbrella stroller. Fold it up to walk up and down the subway stairs and someone carry the child if at all possible. Avoid rush hour and you'll be fine. You'll have absolutely no problem with the Staten Island Ferry, you may have to just fold it up again when going on and off the ferry......you need to get off then back on again to head back to Manhattan.
One thing, Times Square when very busy can be difficult with a stroller. If so, walk parallel to 7th ave up and down 6th.

I second taking an umbrella stroller. That's what we used when my DDs were stroller age and it's fine on most modes of transportation in NYC. We went into the City every couple of months (still do but now they walk & love it) and never had any problems going from train/subway/cabs.

Have fun!
