After looking at all that dcl has to offer for St Maarten and St Thomas,I think that we will rent cars. This way we can spilt our time on the beach and shopping. I guess the $50 for the car rental will allow me to spend more on the family. So far this may be the best option for me. :moped:

Hello,

Is there ample parking for cars on the island? Where do you pick up and drop off the car? Is it easy to get around on the island? Is renting a car cost effective compared to taking taxi's?

Sorry for all the questions, but this might be an option for my family.

Frank

Hello all,

Where are we doing the post card exchange? Also when? I'm gonna pick up some this week.

Thanks

Frank

Does anyone going have someone in there party that plays golf. I always wanted to do the golf excursion on St Thomas but never had anyone to do it with. So if anyone was thinking about it please let me know. Leaving my wife with the Credit Card on St Thomas for 5 hours is not the best idea but I am willing to take the chance :teeth:

Jay, I can check with my Dad about the golf thing...He is a golfer, but he has never golfed on the island.

Wow I see dad will be hitting his 50th anniversary on the cruise. It's the wife and myself hitting 10 years while on the cruise. Let him know we can Celebrate with a round of golf :) :) :)....Also let him know I will pick up the beer on the turn :) :) (Golf Jargon ;))

Oops I see 2006 is the 50 year....Well then we can celebrate to big 49 with golf.(As you can see I will do anything for a round:))

Frank - I picked up a travel book on the islands as well as AAA. I think the rental car will depend on what you like to do....We enjoy touring the island, stopping at remote places and taking photos. We are not into shopping, much....and while we love to try new food and would waste away hours relaxing at some cool resturants, we do not have the time for the one day. Plus, we are not going on an excursion and have no kids to include in the plans. So the car fits. I have not compared the cost effectiveness. Some, NOT ALL, rental car companies have locations at the port itself...others do not. I have heard mixed reviews about renting in advance or walking up.

I am not sure if this answers your question, but it might help you ferret out a decision. Happy Planning....

Hey Chris -- you're scaring us with your anti-social pic, but at least you are posting. Check out this site: http://www.blueislanddivers.com

I have heard and read that between St. Maartin and St. Thomas that St. Thomas has better scuba. Plus, there is a rating of the dive shops somewhere on the scubaboard thread,,,,I am not a member and cannot find it....

I booked with budget for both islands. They are in walking distance, about 4 blocks. ST Maarteen rental is $50 and ST Thomas is $48. This will allow us to go to the beach and shop at the same time. My wife want to see some of the city ,so we may just follow chip and dale and forget the beach. The kids can take 2 days with out water. No tipping when you are driving your self. If I can drive a bus in downtown Chicago and drive in Maui, [You know that one lane road that go up the side of a mountain for over 20 miles], I can do this one.

Hana, Hana Hana!!!:moped: :moped: :moped:

Ahhhh, The road to Hana! My DH picked a flower at one of the parks (I know it says boldly - DO NOT PICK FLOWERS,,, but he thought he could sneak just one) and a guard saw him and threatened to haul him straight to jail!! The reason DH risked being jail mate #34567 was due to fact he had just lost his wedding ring in one of the waterfalls, when being the daredevil that he is, jumped in!

My wife just had to do Hana. Once I started up the mountain side, I was ready to pee on myself. I think we only did 6mph. She sat in the back seat with some friends that went with us and held her head for most of the trip. Never ,Never, Never again will I make that trip. I'm glad that it didn't get dark on us. :sunny: :teeth:

My avatar is strictly PG...13 and ALL POC!

I read the same thing about St. Thomas vs. St. Martini. Unfortunately, I don't think I'm willing to give up Coral World & Coki Beach with the kids (this trip). If somebody was offering a SASY(Supplied Air Snorkeling for Youth), I might take DD for a dip...

From further reading on the scubaboard, it seems that blue island divers is an excellent choice for a cruiser. If I ever go to St. T without a gigantic mickey boat, I think I'll use Chris Sawyer, though. But, it's much more likely that another cruise will be lined up before we get back from this one! Next time, I'm in for the dive.

Good Morning Cruisers...way too H :sunny: T to garden today, so I may look to see when the Magic leaves the west coast. There is a thread with webcam posted. Trying to make pirate outfits for DH and I.....we are going ALL out....,course sewing skills are very basic, so no acadamy awards for best costume, just all in good fun.

AWOLTODAY - Coki beach sounds fun with the kids. You can snorkle right off the beach. You can scuba too, no boats needed......Perhaps you can look into both???/ I still need to complete my refresher dive before I make reservations.....I really want to do well.....

I could only dive if I had a buddy, but will definitely snorkel around with the kids. I still might try to hit a refresher course before I leave. It's been way too long!
