Inside Scoop
Glad tidings we bring
In the Winter 2003 issue of Vacation Magic, we're celebrating the dazzling debut of Wishes™, the new nighttime fireworks spectacular at the Magic Kingdom® Park. You'll hear from the folks who helped develop this new 'story in the sky' and learn a bit about how its breathtaking displays were designed. We'll also introduce you to three new attractions coming soon to the Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot®, and Disney-MGM Studios.

And because there's no place like home for the holidays, discover the decorative themes and seasonal delights at the Disney Vacation Club Resorts. We'll also take you behind the scenes with Holiday Services, a team of dedicated Cast Members who transform the Walt Disney World Resort into a spectacular winter wonderland every year.

Look for our merry Magic in your mailbox later this month!

A look behind the 'Springs'
What else is there to say about Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa? After all, over the course of the last several editions of Member Clubhouse, we've introduced you to High Rock Spring, the feature pool area; the lobby and public areas; The Artist's Palette, the unique food, beverage, and retail concept; and the new Disney Vacation Club Sales Center scheduled to open in conjunction with the Resort. But there's still another tale to tell about the newest Disney Vacation Club Resort, and it's one that's seldom shared.

Malvina Craig is an Owner's Representative with Walt Disney World Resort Operations Development. In her role, Malvina represents each entity that needs a say in the development of Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, from Hotel Operations and Transportation to Security, Corporate IT, and more.

"Most people don't really know that Operations Development exists, and assume that Walt Disney Imagineering handles everything," Malvina explains. "They might be surprised to learn how much care and attention really goes into everything. We spend a lot of time thinking about what our Guests need and deciding how Operations can best meet those needs." Checking into a resort? Malvina's team has determined how many Front Desk stations are necessary: "We'll tell them for a hotel this size, this type, this level, this is what you need."

A Cast Member for over 28 years, Malvina has worked for most, if not all, of the Operations teams she now represents during meetings: Merchandise, Food and Beverage, Front Desk, Housekeeping, Transportation, and Recreation. She considers herself a generalist, well-suited to her current role, since "it's really helpful if I know as much as possible about a lot of different areas."

"We trust our developer, Walt Disney Imagineering, to make things look pretty, but we want to make sure they work," she continues. Looking at building designs, for example, linens may be on Malvina's mind. "I've got to get linens to that building," she says. "So where's the linen room? How do I get the truck into the area to deliver linens? If there's another vehicle parked there, the truck has to be able to get around that parked vehicle. So that can affect the width of paths. If we're going to use a heavy vehicle, it might affect the type of concrete used...those are the kinds of issues we get into."

"We also specify, purchase, and install all of the operating equipment and supplies for the project," Malvina adds. "That includes linens, vacuum cleaners, pots and pans, office furniture, everything." During a resort's opening, her team assists the Operations Team there, providing support for several years. "When we design a resort, we make some decisions about what we think Guests are going to do, but it's sort of the old story about the college that doesn't put sidewalks in until after they open, seeing where the footpaths are and placing sidewalks there," Malvina tells Member Clubhouse. "We have to watch and see how our Guests actually use the property. Then we may make post-opening enhancements."

Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa is Malvina's first Disney Vacation Club project. "It's been a wonderful experience. I've certainly learned a lot about what makes Members different from our regular, day-to-day Walt Disney World Guests...their sense of ownership and belonging, and 'coming Home,'" she says. "They really do feel like this is their home. I feel like I'm helping build a home more than a hotel."

What does she like most at the new Resort? "I think the feature pool [High Rock Spring Pool] is awesome, absolutely awesome," Malvina responds. "The rockwork and the ambience with the water, the springs, and the slide...I think it's going to just blow our Guests away. They're going to love it!"

Thanks for posting! I signed up online but did not receive this email.

Thank you for posting this! Is the newsletter currently anywhere on the member site? I want to be sure that I sign DH for the Carolwood Pacific Historic Society, but between now and Dec. 1st, this thread will be "gone" from easy finding, and I only can find newletters on the member site up to Sept. 2003. I have signed up for the newsletter on e-mail, but it must take awhile to get in the system.
