Not so much a savings, more like reallocating where the money goes (Part 20 pg14) NEW

Not so much a savings...
(slightly late free dining trip report)
Part 17, I think, in which we finally eat at Coral Reef.

Our cast:
Me- HaleyB. Disney fanatic with a DISboards addiction.
Steve- Mr. Silly. Disney fan with a tendancy to lurk on the DISboards.
Max- Likes to see his name in print. Loves Disney. Likes to hear funny DISboard stories.
Sophia- Little Disney fanatic in the makeing. I am sure she will have a user ID here soon.

________________________________________________________________

When we last left our fearless family they were in the lobby of the Coral Reef. Lets check back and see how this dinner worked out.

So, with high hopes for another magical meal, we walk into the lobby of the Coral Reef.

End part 15 (or is it end part 16)?

I have mixed up on my part numbering again, I think. So I am just going to call this part 17... Oct. 5th, 2005.

Here begins part the 17th.

Now.

Right below this.

I lied.

Just a little white lie.

(I hope bicker doesn't read this) j/k sort of...

Ok

Let's get this TR going

Here begins the next installment

Right now

below

Actually it is right below this.

really

:)

here goes...

Holy moly (hee hee, I like that phrase so I borrowed it from someone). It was a sea of people. Not the kind of sea we came to see at all.

They had overbooked. Yikes.

So I check in, and I ask for a table on a lower level if possible. I even say we do not mind waiting a little longer for it. While checking in I hear several people get turned away, they didn’t have ressies and the place was booked for the night. Then we wait the long wait. Maybe 30 minutes or so, seemed like a long wait. Tour Guide Mike has us spoiled.

When we get called another family of four gets called at the same time. I thik it might have been Zzub.

They are getting our table, I think, as I watch them being seated on the first level in a booth. We are the first table on the top level. Expansive view, but not close up. Oh well. No one but me knows I asked for close up so no one but me minds.

I don’t really mind much, we always sit in the back. Maybe we look rowdy.

Our server seems a bit hurried. It is a full house and they have a full waiting room so I think he was a bit hurried, and harassed, and harried. But he notices we have a food allergy and brings out a chef.

Sadly it is not our Aussie friend from last year.

We work out something for Max to eat and all is well. I had the crab cakes and they were very good. Steve had whatever vegetarian option there was. It was not memorable.

Sophia ordered pizza I think, and I think she was ok with it. Max picked at his grilled chicken. Dessert saved the day. Sophia had the kids build your own Sunday and loved it. Max had a Rice Dream ice-cream build your own Sunday, but it was less impressive than Sophia's because all he could have were the sprinkles.

I had the Wave. It is yummy. It is perfect. It is beautiful and good. I think Steve had something else, I wasn’t much paying attention since I had a chocolate dream come true in front of me. In case you are wondering, I liked it.

Service was extremely slow, and the timing of the meal was horrible. Good thing we have mellow kids because we sat at our table for over two hours.

I think this is the biggest flaw in the dining plan (for us) it just takes up too much time. The biggest tactical error I made on this trip was to plan lots of dinners for our sit down meals. We found they disrupted our touring plans. They also took too dang long. The other flaw for us was that we kept buying other stuff. Because we had so many free meals we decided to do a few signature meals and then paid for a few meals out of pocket to cover the days we borrowed credits from. Bad idea. It meant that we had a TS meal every single day and two on one of our days. We also had lots of left over CS meals on our last day. We would have been much better off using the CS credits and having a few days with no table service meals.

As many of you know I am in the middle of planning our next free dining trip. This lesson is not easily learned. I find myself tempted to do a sit down meal everyday. There are so many great options. I currently have one day without a TS meal planned out of 11. I need to cut one more and it is really hard to decide which one.

Ok so has that meal felt like two hours yet? It was.

Two hours, that is.

So we “paid” our bill (still makes me smile) and tried to decide what to do next. Sophia wants to ride Soarin’ (over California). again.

It was 8:30 and Future World was empty. I thought to myself, self, we could run over, ride Soarin’ and still see most of Illuminations...

However self was a bit off on her time estimate. Plus the wait time for Soarin’ is way off. Standby says 10 minutes. It was more like 25.

We are stuck in line. We have no choice, so we go ahead and enjoy the ride. I do love this ride. Illuminations has started already when we get out of The Land.

Worse yet, Max realizes he left his Pokemon Origami book at the Coral Reef.

Max is a wonderful child, but ever since he was born we have chanted the same thing to him. Equanimity. He is easy going, kind, happy more often than not, a real trooper, and he puts up with a lot of abuse from his baby sister. However if he gets knocked off his center he has a hard time getting back on it. He sometimes takes life's knocks pretty hard. Max is our special boy. He had horrible colic as an infant. Later he had elusive medical issues (most of which were the result of his food allergies, in the end). He was the happiest most sunshiny boy as a baby and toddler. Loved to be held and loved to cuddle. Pure golden sunshine, so long as he was not in pain. He didn’t like to sleep much. But his colic and food allergies caused him to be in pain sometimes, and when he was he was inconsolable. Steve would pace with him for hours, trying to calm him down. It was very sa(i)d.

We have finally gotten a pretty good handle on Max’s allergies and such. He still lacks equanimity. He tends towards the dramatic, really.

In a really round about way, what I am saying here is that the disappearance of Max’s Pokemon origami book is a potential problem. Even if we replace it Max will be upset and most likely very hard on himself for losing it. It could put him off his center, and it might take days for him to find it again.

I also have a peculiar fixation on my kids not losing things. One of my clearest childhood memories is of going to WDW with my family the second time (I was pretty young the first time). Epcot had just opened. My Dad had been waiting for years. We went the first summer it was open. We drove. From Buffalo, New York. Long drive with four kids. My parents had a totally radical station wagon with the wood side panels. The seats folded down and we put sleeping bags on the floor and played around back there for this trip. This is way before the seat belt craze changed everything (for the better, but it was fun to spread out in our sleeping bags for long trips). Anyway we were each allowed to pick one thing to bring home. I picked a doll/purse. It was an American Indian woman with a papoose on her back, all dressed in furs, there was a little zipper area where you could put stuff. I can still picture it. It was the bees knees, the most ut, it was IT for me. I was worried about it on the drive home, because the inside of the station wagon was chaos. So I stuck way back in the corner where I thought it would be safe. I was, maybe 7. So way back in the corner by the tailgate that opened all the way seemed like a good spot. Except we stopped for gas or lunch or something and my Mom needed something out of the luggage, so she opened the tailgate. My doll must have fallen out.

What is worse is, no one seemed to notice or care that I had lost my prize. They did not turn the car around to see if they could recover my doll. It had been awhile since that stop, I guess. But I was SURE my Mother would let me pick something else out. Let me get something at one of those road side touristy stores on the way home. And I was so sure she would I never said a word about it. Which is a flaw of mine. I pretty much never say anything when I am disappointed or want something. I passed this flaw onto my children to a certain extent and while I try very hard to tell them they should speak up, and that it is ok to speak up for themselves, I still have trouble doing it myself. And children learn what they see. So I am particularly sensitive about lost items. Nothing gets lost on my watch. Except my keys, but that is another thing. Nothing that belongs to my kids gets lost on my watch, if I can help it.

Ok, enough with all the flashbacks. Sorry 'bout that.

So we run, or, um, walk with purpose, I mean, to the Coral Reef in hopes of finding Max’s book. We are a hope filled bunch.

On the way I assure him that Disney has a great lost and found system (while all the while planing a secret trip to Japan to pick up another copy, Disney’s lost and found system takes way too much effort for a $6 book). Little did we know that we would have a run in with Disney lost and found in a few days.

So we make it to the Coral Reef and sprint for the check in desk. We are just in time. They did find it, and have it still. It was just about to be sent into that no mans land known as Disney lost and found. We are victorious so of course we do a little victory dance. Or maybe we don’t, but we are happy.

Unfortunately we miss Illuminations. Worse still we see just enough of it over the greenery that blocks our view for Sophia to realize she missed something. On the bright side, it gives her something to look forward to for next time. Because there is always a next time when you are talking about WDW.

The show is just ending and we are no fools. We high tail it for the buses. We walk quickly with purpose. We might possibly even do a little run-walking. We beat the thronging masses and make it onto one of the first buses. Max and Sophia get to stand up and surf the aisle, so they are happy. All is well in our Disney World.

And then we sleep. The good, deep, refreshing sleep I like to call Disney Sleep.

Great points, oh smart one. When you don't have a long trip, it can seem forever to sit at a table. WCC and Coral Reef were sooo slow for us! And, like you, we had leftover CS when we left.

Equanimity? I like that one :thumbsup2 !

Your pictures are so happy and full of fun!! I love them!

Haley - Love, Love the Pics. Your kids are beautiful. Did Max shrink in the wash? I thought he was taller at the start of the trip :lmao:

Thanks Grammy- they can be kinda cute sometimes.

Great report, Haley, and wonderful pics! I'll have make it a point to actually go to Disney sometime :rotfl2:

Oh, Haley, yeah, that MUST be it!!!! :teeth:

Haley!!!!!!

You lost your papoose??? I am soo said, wolley even, for you. And. You know what?? I would have turned the car around. And. I know you would have too.

Haley,

Just read the report in one sitting! I am enjoying it immensely! :thumbsup2

2005 “Free” Dining the trip report (a little late)
and not so much about the dining as it turns out
Not so much a savings, more like reallocating where the money goes.

Part 18 in which we go to the Magic Kingdom.

We are more than halfway done with our trip. All we have left is a Magic Kingdom day and a Disney Quest day, and then a pathetically sad last day. I don’t have very good notes for the last days of the trip, but I am sure I will think of all sorts of asides to fill up the space :)

How about a short recap:

I crack myself up sometimes.

No, really, a recap.

We drive through Hurricane ravaged states to get to WDW. Check in after only getting slightly lost and are upgraded. We start off rather slow with a failed attempt at seeing Fantasmic! Everyone gets soaked. Then we do some other stuff. I was only kidding about the recap. You have to read it all again. Yourself. Now. I’ll wait for ya.

Today we go to the Magic Kingdom. And it is Magical. There are low crowds all day and we ride all the big guys, some even more than once. The only ride we have trouble riding again is Space Mountain. Which I love. Which might even be my favorite ride in all of WDW. If it was the Disneyland version it would be hands down. It rocks. Plus the line is dark so it was a good ride for those Disneyland dates. Not that I had many of those...

We rode a few of the Fantasyland rides and checked out Pooh’s playground. Max and Sophia were a little too old for it, it is perfect for little kids though. The ground is covered in that cool soft squishy plastic stuff... I did make the kids pose for a few pictures :)

Big Thunder Mountain is one of the few rides we all love. Pirates and Haunted mansion are the other two. All the rest have at least one person who is less excited to ride, or who just will not ride. I am just talking about the MK here. We all love to ride GS and Soarin’ and TT. In Epicot. My tied for favorite park.

On this day in the MK there was a neat little serendipity type thing going on. The fastpass fates smiled upon us. The fast pass return time for BTM was only 20 minutes out. The stand by line was about 20 minutes. So we got a set of fast passes and jumped in line. Then when we got off we grabbed another set and rode again with our first set. Then we had some fries (with lots of catsup) from the snack cart by the exit and then it was time to ride again. The fast pass window was still only 20 minutes out but we decided three times in a row was enough. For right then.

We even made it over to Tom Sawyer’s Island. That is something we had not done in Florida before. We had been to the one in Disneyland a number of times, but they are not exactly the same. You can tell by the way my children hold a gun that we are a big hunting family...

d6428b4b.jpg

LOL. We had already seen so much of the MK that day, so we felt really relaxed. We just wandered around the island. Sophia wanted nothing to do with any caves, but Steve and Max did a little spelunking.

Funny, that.

Sophia loves spelunking and has been in some crazy caverns. Dark damp places. Beautiful places. There is a cave near us that can only be accessed by a rope drop. I would like to do that someday. It costs a small fortune though, so it may be a pipe dream.

Anyway.

They loved the fort, I think they would have played there all day if we had let them. But we did have one more very important ride to fit in, and an ADR Mommy was really looking forward to. So we wandered back to the raft launch after awhile. We just missed a raft so we had a little wait. Max and Sophia played checkers (Sophia won). The light was perfect for photos and I got several good ones of the kids. It was a brand new camera and I had not learned to use it yet, so I didn’t get a lot of great photos on this trip (I think the Pooh’s playground ones were the best of the trip).

Did I already post this one?

Actually I still have not really learned to use my camera. I would take a photography class, but I am worried there would be too many essays ;)

We rode Haunted Mansion, but my buggy had no sound. So I was said.
But there was a bit of a line so we moved on. Sophia was really into the hidden Mickey thing this trip. Here is one of the easy to find ones in the MK
3c2bbaf8.jpg

We rode the Jungle Cruise and it must have been raining a little because in the pictures Max and Sophia have on ponchos.

Something that has never happened in the history of the Silly family happened. The skipper asked if anyone wanted to drive. No one answered. Everyone thought he was joking. He asked again and Max spoke up (yeah Max). So he said Max could drive. And when Sophia figured out it was the real deal, she got up there too. It was great. None of the other kids on board would go up there, so Max and Sophia each got a long turn.

Max as Jungle Cruise captain
fee6047e.jpg

Sophia as Jungle Cruise Captain (you can see a tiny sliver of her)
37199180.jpg

Some of the peoples on the boat got a little worried when we headed for the water fall. Heh. That still tickles my funny bone. Suckers.

I wish I would have asked for a turn. I have always wanted to be a skipper. Except I am not funny.

When Sophia was in preschool they made a picture for us for Mother’s Day and on the back was a question and answer thing. My mom is ________ years old (20). My Mom is prettiest when______________. (She goes scrapbooking). My Mom is funny when she _______________. (My Mom is not funny). Mr. Silly has the whole thing on his blog.

Just today (Aug 5th, 2006) almost a year later, Max and Sophia were talking about there time as skippers of the Jungle Cruise. And bragging on it to a friend.

They are starting to get excited about are up coming trip.

I can tell because I found Pal Mickey in the den.
Then I found our pin collection all over the front hall.
Then I found our spray fan in the bathroom (they were testing the batteries).

Yep, I think they are a bit excited. Me too :) Any ways back to last year. We rode the Jungle Cruise.

Crud. I am starting way too many paragraphs/sentences with “We rode...” or “We went...” I need to reread Zzub so I can borrow some better transitional phrases.

Let’s just assume one or more of us rode just about every ride in the park. Like I sa(i)d it was a slow day. I think it may be my favorite Magic Kingdom day ever. It was not horribly hot, we did not get drenched, and we did not feel pressed for time. We strolled. We pressed pennies. We smelled roses.

25527469408_0_ALB.jpg

We also might have experienced a few other smells, but nothing can compare to the hairy guy in the wife beater tee shirt (drenched, and it was not raining) that we stood behind in line to see Mickey on our first day at the MK. Crud again. That sentence structure stinks. Not as badly as that guy did, though. We bailed out of that line in record time. PSA- showers are our friend.

Where was I? Oh yes, it was an idealic day in the Magic Kingdom. The kind of day we all hope and strive and try to plan for. The warm sun on our faces, birds singing, sheep grazing in the field while the sheared boys nap under a tree, kinda day.

That’s it. There is no punch, no surprise disaster to spoil the day. It was just perfect. The only thing that could have made it better was a call from Rochester. But who am I kidding. 18 year old boys never call their Mom, unless they have bad news. So never mind, a call would not have made it any better.

At some point we headed out, and showered and got cleaned up. We were eating at the Flying Fish that night and they have a dress code, don’tcha know. We parked at the Boardwalk and took a peek around. Fancy. But the parking sucks. You would think for the big bucks they would set it up so you didn’t have to cross a river to get from the lot to the hotel. Maybe it is too fancy for that. Maybe fancy people do not park their own cars. I am cheap so I never use Valet services. Even when they are free. Because you still have to tip the kid who gets your car.

And on that note I am out of here, I need to get some actual stuff done today. School starts tomorrow. Very early tomorrow.

Then we had some fries (with lots of catsup)
Just like someone else I know and love!!!! Have a few fries with your ketchup, why don't you???? :teeth:

Sophia claims that she went in the caves. I am pretty sure everyone did go in them since I have a vague memory of hiding and scaring her, though the only thing I really remember is that they smelled bad. The caves smelled bad, that is.

Another great installment, Haley. I love it when someone has a really good day in the World.

Haley--I started reading your trip report because we share the pain and privilege of parenting sons with extreme food allergies who love WDW because it's safe.....

and fell in love with your trip report and all the other things we share.

I grew up in Redlands, CA, and my hubby grew up in Glendora, and now we both live in Punxsutawney PA----

where hunting is a national pastime.

We don't get MKL day off in the schools, but we get Buck Day and Doe Day off, every year. It's a hoot.

Part 19

So we had a perfect day at the MK and a meal at the Flying Fish. I had an excellent meal there. But upon reflection I realized that both the kids didn’t eat their food. So we will not be going back. At least not this next trip. We also watched most of Illuminations from the bridge that night.

Our next day we went to MGM. We were there for the rope drop and we walked with purpose, but did not run or pass up the CM’s leading us. We were the second group of people to ride RnR. I can not recall if Sophia rode or if Steve stayed with her while Max and I rode. I know she has already decided she will not ride it this year. After a rockin’ ride we went on ToT, cause that is how you do things at MGM.

MGM is really my least favorite park. After the two thrillers there isn’t a ton that I look forward to. Star Tours is always fun and the themeing outside is well done. But, you know, I like the Disneyland line better. And I like the Muppets 3-d. “It is extremely unpatriotic to not move to the end of your row.” That kills me. DED. I probably have that quote wrong cause I am too lazy to google it and check. I am sure it is out there though, if anyone wants to.

We saw the Indiana Jones stunt show for the first time ever. I think I feel asleep during it. Sitting up. Or else there is no plot to the show and it is very short. Maybe Tour Guide Mike is right, maybe afternoon breaks are a good idea? Naw. I’ll just nap at some of the shows. Works for me.

It was an uneventful morning. In fact I have nothing much to say about it. Sounds Dangerous was somewhat underwhelming. The Great Movie Ride is a bit of a misnomer. We tired of MGM and hopped over to DTD for some Disney Quest action.

Disney Quest is big fun. It is often maligned on the DIS. Sour grapes is what I think. They just suck at Centipede. Probably. Or are too wussie to design and ride their own coaster. We love DQ. I also like Dairy Queen, which is what I think of every time I see DQ. Anyhow. We played. It was fun.

We ate at Pucks which is right near DQ, cause I am a good planner. It is a tightly packed place. Cramped even. And loud. The food was delicious but the atmosphere I found unnerving. Not as bad as the Rainforest Cafe, at least there were no gorilla’s screaming at us. I sad gorilla. Then we went back to DQ and closed the place down. We exited through the gift shop. Big surprise there. That Disney would have a gift shop at an exit.

It was late but we lingered. We had not really spent enough money for the day. It seems. So we looked around. We got into a long pin trading conversation with a really sweet CM. He taught us about lanyard pins. He also admired one of Sophia’s pins. It was Figment, parking lot C. Sophia loves Figment. Daddy on the other hand can not stand Figment. So much so that we did not ride it this year. Sophia never noticed, but I think that might make Steve the meanest Daddy in the world.

I thought about asking Sophia if maybe she wanted to trade it to him, the pin, but since I knew she loved Figment I didn’t. She still has it.

We got back to the room late. Very late. We were asleep before our heads hit the pillows. Next up is our last full day and we have a date for breakfast with a Mouse. Not that Mouse, his girlfriend Minnie.

Good goin', Haley. Will you be my TR buddy? Together we can shame each other into finishing.

Tell Mel she needs to touch up her roots. They're looking pretty un-blonde in that Jungle Cruise picture.
