Not ROFR thread - general discussion

An interesting thought and question. I ultimately feel like it is just hard to say. When I hear people from the site sponsor that they send out to the various podcasts to talk about the resale market, they all seem to be like, we need more contracts. And their list prices certainly don't seem to be coming down much from what they always are, so it seems like they are able to move them. So, at least what they say publicly, there seems to be more a lack of supply than a lack of demand, but who knows - at the end of the day, they make money from volume and from higher prices. I feel like if we saw them significantly lower list prices, it might be a sign that they can't move them unless the price were lower. Would they raise prices if there was excess demand and low supply? I'd think so, so maybe supply and demand is actually relatively balanced right now? Which, I suppose reinforces the thought you're having - less supply, but also less demand.

And, maybe it is all just seasonal. One DVC podcaster I listen to often makes the point that it is winter time, when folks up north are dreaming about warm weather that their mind starts turning to something like DVC, and so that is when there is increased demand. And, that just happens to coincide with dues season, which tends to increase supply as folks realize they don't want to pay another years worth of dues.

Just some thoughts I have.

I follow certain listings, I save them and check back. I can say they have all sold quickly.

Be careful of overborrowing. If you ever had to cancel due to an unforeseen circumstance and your trip on borrowed points is right before the end of the UY all the points are gone. That's an extreme case, but it can get messy when mixing UYs of transferred points.

The only way to truly protect points would be planning travel on the current UY allotment prior to your banking deadline so they can be cancelled 31+ days into the future and then banked.

The DVC insurance can also help, but that will only cover dues.
I have thought about this and in 2027 we want to take an international trip. Tokyo or Paris of course because Disney 🤣

My initial thought was to sell points to help fund the trip, but now im thinking since im on zeros of alloted and borrowed points, it might be good to just let them be and pay cash so that i can be back to normal in 2028.

We do plan to buy poly direct in March, but all of thise points have been accounted for (alloted and borrowed 🤣🤣) for what i hope is a welcome home stay at Aulani 🤣

But.... I also thought since I have a December UY that I can use up half of them for a Christmas trip next year after Aulani too 🤣🤣

Have you bought the insurance before? Im usually very weary of insurance companies, just have had bad experiences

Letting the contracts reset may be a good option!

I know it sounds crazy, but things do come up. I have had to cancel multiple trips for random things so I like the peace of mind.

I have purchased the Travelex insurance. The cost was so small for the peace of mind. I actually had a claim pay out on a baggage delay. It covered the gap between the airline and what Chase paid me with my CSR. The reimbursement easily covered multiple years of insurance and that convinced me I should buy it for life 🤣 It did take a bit of time though. I provided everything timely, but Travelex had to verify the reservation was used by me, with my points, on the right UY with DVC. Once that was done I got an ACH payment to my bank account 👍

For me, the big downside here is that the policy only covers one UY. Two UYs then two different policies. And so on. Does anyone know if the revisions to this insurance (it's moving to per person next year) will have the same UY restrictions?

Please report back for the resorts you are following!
For now, I'm following BLT, CCV, and RIV contracts with my same UY. I've sort of been following them anyways. I will say, I saw a 50 point RIV come on the market this past week (and not priced particularly low), and it appears to have sold within 1 or 2 days.

On the flip side, I am seeing a couple of 75 point CCV contracts, but not priced particularly well IMO, and they appear as if they have been sitting for some time.

Do you mean two UYs like you own Dec and March? Or do you mean two UYs like you need a 2024 and 2025 policy if you've banked points and the trip uses both?

I am unfamiliar with how it works if you own multiple UYs, but the first time I purchased the insurance I did have to buy it for the banked and current allotment. Now it's just annual so I am always covered with one payment. 🤣

could you give more info on the new insurance? Where have you read about this? I've been considering starting to buy the DVC insurance.

Specifically September and March.

I saw this somewhere on one of the boards, that the insurance plan was moving to "per person" in 2026. But now, honestly, I can't remember where I saw it. And googling brought up nothing. So maybe that was a night were I had that third glass of wine.

For my second resale contract - I am convinced I could have paid a lesser amount had I bought a contract with a different UY.

I’m satisfied with my purchase, with the price I paid at the moment I had a deal.

That being said, I would love to hear from people who manage multiple UYs. It may open a new path for any future purchase.
I have 5UYs - easy peasy - each UY is for a specific trip/time of year and I have enough points In each so I don’t need to transfer.

NEED ADVICE, PLEASE!

Just found out today I need to cancel a xxxxxx reservation for a studio at xxxxx This reservation was made with June 2024 UY points banked to 2025 UY. Am I understanding correctly if iI cancel today the points will be need to be used for a reservation that begins within 60 days from today?

I won’t be able to go before February and already have a Feb 8 - 14 reservation booked for a deluxe studio at VGF. The VGF reservation was made with Feb 2026 UY points.

Could I somehow use the xxxxx points for a Feb 2 -8 stay at whatever resort is available, then cancel the VGF reservation and bank the VGF points?

Would selling the xxxxxx reservation be a better option and, If so, how would iI go about doing it?

What other options are there for my situation? What would you do?

I will greatly appreciate any and all help with figuring this out.

It's a rolling 60 days. So 60 days from the time of booking. . So if you book early December, you could use them--if there was availability--in early February. They will expire at the end of your UY--May 31. If I were you, I'd set up waitlists to try to "wash" the points in holding (the points you'll have by cancelling) by--probably day by day--replacing out days in your Feb reservation until all of the holding points are used.

I’m sorry you have to cancel so last minute I hope all is well!

So luckily, the 60 day window is a rolling window until the end of your UY, in your case until May 31st 2026. So it’s whatever is available within 60 days out of your desired dates. If you want a Feb 6th start, you can book it Dec 6th for whatever is available!

If you can make a “last minute trip” work and don’t mind settling for whatever resort is available (stalking a bit might be necessary), I’d do that personally. Of course you can try to sell your BCV room but I think it’ll be really hard so last minute and would have to settle for a fraction of the cost it deserves.

You should also be able to swap your holding points for the VGF stay when the 60 day window opens and then bank the extra VGF points.

Just to add! Don’t cancel the VGF reservation, you can go in and modify which points you want to use once the 60 day window is open! If you cancel, you might lose the room.

I deleted the details because it could be seen as a potential rental.

Any cancellation 30 days or less results in holding. These points will expire at the end of your June 2025 UY and can be used for any trip booked 60 days or less from check in.

To use them in Feb, you need to wait until Dec 10th to book a trip starting Feb 8th because of the 60 day holding rule.

So, you can’t replace any of the VGF trip until at least then.

It looks like you have two UYs. You’ll have two choices. Just book nights in the June UY, or transfer to the Feb UY so you can supplement them with the VGF points if needed.

Obviously, renting it out is an option too…which is why I removed the details and dates.
