Hi!

Can someone tell me if ebooks for Nook can be purchased and downloaded in Canada ?

I was planning to buy a Nook here for a gift for someone living in Canada. I don't want to do that though if they can't purchase ebooks.

I know there are a lot of legalities with copyright, etc. re: digital books - and I have received conflicting information from Barnes and Noble stores as well as their customer service department online - some of them are saying yes, it works the same in Canada as it would here in the US, but not in other countries (ie: overseas) and still others are saying no, you can't purchase ebooks for it in Canada, just the US. It would be nice if they were consistent in their answers for what many might consider a large purchase.

So....I am hoping that someone on the DIS is living in Canada and has the Nook - and can tell me for sure . Thanks in advance!

It would doubtful that the Nook could be used in Canada, since the 3G connectivity is on AT&T's network (which would not be accessible in Canada without incurring exorbitant data roaming fees).

Also, since Barnes and Noble (makers of the Nook) doesn't operate bookstores in Canada, this device would make for a pretty pricey paperweight.

Here is a copy of the content from the email that I just received from Barnes and Noble online customer service. This one makes it appear that you can use the Nook in Canada - which is quite contrary to what a local store told me on Saturday...and contrary to another email that I received last week.

Thank you for inquiring about the availability of Barnes & Noble
NOOKbooks to customers with Canadian addresses.

Currently, only customers physically located in the U.S. and Canada are
able to purchase eBooks on the Barnes & Noble website. Ebooks are easily purchased and downloaded in either the U.S. or Canada.

When you are checking for the availability of an NOOKbook title on
bn.com to our Canadian customers, look for the message "These items ship
to US and Canadian addresses only" which appears under the Available for
Download field. You can purchase these eBooks with confidence if you
are in a US or Canadian location.

We hope you found this information helpful.

From what I understand from other users, Barnes and Noble has a very limited selection of eBooks available to Canadian users.

You can read about this here

This can be circumvented by spoofing a US address and thus shopping as a US reader, however that gets pretty technical and most just aren't willing to go to the trouble.

However, the nook isn't limited to shopping solely at Barnes. It can read standard Adobe Digital Edition ePub files, which means nearly everything available at Kobobooks.com (A Canadian Store).

Or the Sony eReader store.

If you decide to purchase the nook for a Canadian user you might want to make sure they understand how to shop and download from non Barnes and Noble sources so they will have maximum availability.

You might also consider another brand which will work more seamlessly with these sources. Amazon (Kindle) has a pretty robust Canadian Availability catalog. Kobobooks makes their own brand of reader and there are some other plain vanilla ePub readers.

There are several Canada specific threads at MobileRead.com and many actual Canadian citizens there who are using the various readers and can give you their experiences and tips.
