Due to some other conversations, I thought I would create(try to) a poll to find out how DVC is really handling the non-smoking request for reservations. If this has been done before, please excuse the duplicate nature.
Since there is no way to account for number of visits, I am doing it as a percentage. Based on your total DVC stays, how often has your non-smoking(or smoking for that matter) request been honored?
I stopped with Less than 50% as the bottom because anything less than 50% is an absolutely miserable job.

We once requested a smoking unit and were assigned a non smoking unit. We called immediately, they brought us ashtrays.
And.....said....".Don't worry about it" when I stated that I wished not to smoke in a non smoking unit.

Thank you, Gail, for not wanting to smoke in a non-smoking room.

We've received a designated non-smoking unit every time -- but once we had a unit that had obviously been smoked in by the previous occupants. I would hate to think that DVC actually encourages this.

Despite efforts by housekeeping (ion or ozone machine, and spray), the smell lingered for our entire stay.

Is there room for a compromise -- such as having DVC provide ashtrays that clearly say "For use on balcony or porch only?"

As I stated in another thread, I had the same experience as Werner. Someone chose to smoke in a non-smoking room that we were given.

Other than that, I can never remember having a problem at WDW with getting a non-smoking room.

Five years, 670 points, and no problems!! :)

We have gotten our request (non-smoking) 4 out of 5 times, so I selected 80-89%. However, the one time our request wasn't honored, we got a Boardwalk view, and the room didn't smell smoky at all, so it definitely wasn't a problem for us.:D

Great idea Werner, however, someone with the nose of a bloodhound would find that offensive.

In 4 years we have been fortunate to not get a "smoking room".

Never a problem with a DVC resort. At the Hard Rock we received a smoking room once.

SInce DVC only 2 trips - 100%
prior to DVC trips 90% - but rectified at check in

I recently posted a trip report on our trip to VWL but left out that our floor was nonsmoking and yet two doors down we saw people on their balcony smoking - Now I don't care if someone smokes but PLEASE request a smoking unit - If you smoke on your balcony my non smoking balcony becomes smoking! If you are requesting a non smoking unit because someone in your party doesn't smoke - and smoking on the balcony because of them then you should just request a smoking unit and continue to smoke on the bacony - that way you are not making my non smoking balcony to a smoking one.

If you smoke on your balcony my non smoking balcony becomes smoking! nit

This is WHY this would not work.

Did not take long to prove my point, which was:

Well...... if a guest comes over who must smoke, I think the balcony is the best alternative instead of smoking inside the room. It still has problems, but it's not as bad as other alternatives. At least you could go inside, and the sleeping area will be OK.. If your stuck in a smoke infested room, there's no escape.

I don't have a problem with people smoking on their balconies. It would be awfully hard to escape smoke outside anyway. We have had a nonsmoking room right above a smoking unit at BWV. So these people were smoking on a balcony of a smoking room and it was definitely reaching us right above. No problem. So what would be the difference if they were in the nonsmoking room just to the right of us. All I can say it that I would much rather that smokers would use the balcony of a nonsmoking unit that to smoke in the unit itself. If we start complaining about smoking on the balconies too much I believe that some people will just do it inside. Exactly what I don't want.

WDWguruDH, you must have been reading my mind. I just booked my first trip for May (BCV) and after reading some other threads, I was compelled to prepare a poll, but just couldn't think of what the content I wanted it to be.

I am a non-smoker, and at some stays (Disney (ASMu) and others) I have been put in a smoking room. I have a tough time staying in a smoking room. I feel I get the smell in my clothes. I am a cigar smoker too, but I never smoke in the room. Usually in open ventilated areas, not even vestibules.

I have found that Disney is more accommodating than others.

We had an akward situation. We wanted connecting, non-smoking rooms, which we requested in advance. They moved us the next day. Fortunately we did not fully unpack.

AEN,
I agree, part of the reason that I created to poll, was to see if there really was a problem. Several other posts would lead you to believe that most don't get their smoking preference, but we have always been sucessful(as this poll would indicate). I believe the trick is putting the smoking request at the top of your preferences. We have never gotten all of our preferences, but we generally get the lst and 2nd. If smoking preference is 2nd or 3rd, they may take your other preferences first and leave you without the smoking preference.

Voted 100%, but someone on this board claimed the 2BR's at BWV on the boardwalk right above the store are "smoking", the ones with the huge decks and arched walls. We had one of those rooms (requested non smoking) and never smelled any smoke at all-so we may have been tricked once. Either that or the view/location was so awesome we never thought to inhale.

So far so good 100% good experance. We have taken many trips and once we had to make a room change due to a poor view @ OKW they only had a 1 br smoking room they asked us to check it before we moved.
