Does anyone know of a car company that will do non-emergency stretcher transportation? I have a friend (and her hubby) who is going on a Disney Cruise next month, but because of her condition when she travels by car she tires very quickly and needs to go in a stretcher if possible. They found a plane that can bring her down, but needs to find a car company to get her from the airport to one of the All Star resorts (they are taking a few days to settle in before the cruise leaves, so she can rest up a bit, on the cruise will be in her wheelchair). Then again from All Star to the port..

Any help would be really appreciated!! I know that if Boise has such a thing, surely Orlando does too, but its hard to figure out how to look it up online... you get a confusing MESS on the searches!

Thanks,

Heidi

It only takes an hour to an hour and a half to get to the port and back. Would she be able to travel on a regular motorcoach or sit in her wheelchair for that length of time? Gosh...what does she do at home? I'm sure there are companies that provide this service though, but just don't know any names or numbers. You might start with a google search of Orlando non emergency stretcher transportation and see what comes up. ---Kathy

Most private ambulance services, at least here in Texas, can provide non-emergency transportation. I don't know the cost, though.

My friend is an incredible young woman. She has recently come from a several month hospital/rehab center stay, and is working to get some of her energy back. She lives life to the fullest extent that she can, and has made such an impression on me to help my son do the same. She is able to be up and about in her condo doing her own needs, but sitting up in a car really tires her out, laying down is better for her. Who knows how long any of us have, she intends to make the most of every day. (we are going on the cruise as well, along with several other families who have difficult and serious health issues... we are going to have a BLAST!!!)

Thanks,

Heidi

This may sound strange, but a stretch limo might work. They tend to have a sideways facing seat that runs almost the length of the rear compartment, so a person can lay down and stretch out on it.

You might look up the various limo companies in Orlando, both at their web site pictures and also talk to them directly.

BTW, I am copying this entire thread, to this point, to the Transportation Forum where you may get additional responses, as well as leaving it here. So check both forums for answers.

We used an ambulance herein CA when transported my FIL from his former home to ours, a trip of about 4 hours, because he had a catheter and my DH was nervous about the length of the drive.

The funny thing was that the ambulance actually broke down about half way there and it would have been a 2+ hour wait for them to bring up another one from their home base. So, in the end, they transfered my FIL to my DH's car and he continued the trip without further incident! If the ambulance company hadn't refunded the cost, it would have been a very expensive way to transport someone: over $1000.

Best of luck and enjoy your trip -- Suzanne

Any private medical transport company will be able to do that ...but it will be very expensive. I worked for one 20 yrs ago and it was high then. bringing my Mom home from the hospital a couple of years ago it was local less than 5 miles was almost $200.

Wouldn't it work if you rented a full size car and made sure the front passenger seat fully reclined. She could lay back very comfortably and it would be a tremendous amount cheaper. Seems like an awful lot of money to spend when she really doesn't need it, and if she is young will it not make her very self conscious and not comfortable getting to the hotel that way? I would clear it with her before setting anything up.

Oh my friend is fully comfortable with the idea of stretcher transport. That is how she has been going to doc appts for the last month or two of being at home. She knows that it helps her to conserve her energy for the things that bring her the most pleasure and quality of life. She is the one who asked me if I had any ideas on how to get the transportation worked out, (we are going on the same cruise) so I am trying to see what I can do. She will be the one who sets it up, as she knows herself best as to what she can and cannot do.

She truly is a very special lady, I count her as one of my heroes.

Thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming! I am passing them on to her and her hubby!

I would call an Orlando based hospital and/or nursing home. They have services they work with to move patients. (They are actually very common in Florida due to the aging of that population) That would give you a good starting point.

I tried doing a search, but couldn't really find much to help you.

Why not just contact Disney directly? They deal with special needs guests all the time, as well as the make a wish foundation. I'm sure they would be able to point you in the right direction. You could also try calling the Orlando airport. Since they're the ones transporting all these special guests to Disney they may have some information as well :)

I hope you and your friend both enjoy your trips!
