No sunburn please...

we live in texas and we are always out in the sun. my 9yo son and 3 yo daughter both have fair skin and light blonde hair. my sons hair is so light we have to put sunscreen on his scalp. we use only one sunscreen its the best ever. its called BULL FROG:thumbsup2

I love Bull Frog :thumbsup2 My favorite is the Marathon Mist.

OP, don't forget hats and sunglasses!

I'm writing a story on this very topic for a local newspaper and was told by two dermatologists and one pediatrician that the ingredient to look for is zinc oxide -- it's a metal and "reflects" the light via sunblocks.

Anything higher than SPF50 isn't worth the additional price.

And you want the sunblock to protect against UVA and UVB rays.

The recommended brand here was Nutrogena.

My wife is a pediatrician, and we live at the beach (where she also practices), so naturally she gets asked this question all the time.

For our kids, we use any of the name-brand sunscreens, SPF 30. She prefers the ones that are NOT "ultra-waterproof" for our little ones. She says its better to re-apply as necessary rather than put the "ultra-waterproof" stuff on the kids.

We cover the kids whenever practical. The best cover of all is a hat.

And don't let the fact that it's an overcast day let you drop your guard. The UV rays penetrate the clouds. They aren't as strong as during a sunny and cloudless day, but they are still there. Some of the worst cases of sunburned kids she sees at the office are the result of parents not applying sunscreen to their kids during a cloudy day at the beach.

I just went to get bagels and stopped in at CVS to check some out, That blue lizard one is zinc oxide.

Is this okay to use on a 1 year old?

DS is very fair, and we always keep him in a hat with a brim all around to protect his head, ears, face, and neck, and we use Banana Boat Baby pump spray lotion. The pump spray isn't as thick and gooey as the pour out stuff, but lasts longer than the aerosol sprays.

We also have the Ocean Potion dab on for extra protection on his ears, nose and cheeks just in case. We also have a pretty good sunshade on our travel stroller.

We live at the beach and so far in 2.5 years no burns!

We use Aveeno for our little guy....works great!!

As for sunshades on the stroller....we have the Phil and Teds UV-blocking sunshade that goes around the entire front of the stroller. It works well...but it does get hot inside the stroller, even though it's breathable fabric. My son also doesn't really like when it's on because he can't really "see" out of the stroller. I think he feels enclosed in too much!

Last June at WDW we would apply Banna Boat for Kids on all of us before putting our clothes on then would use the areosol spray through out the day for a quick re-application. Not one sunburn during our 8 day vacation.

BLUE LIZARD!!!! Seriously in the 3 years we have been using it we haven't had one burn!!!

BIL is a derm. and he told me last year for my blonde (ok bald) blue eyes DD that I needed to find something with a Zinc as the first ingredient. I had only found the stick stuff at Babies-R-us and then a few weeks ago someone on here recommended Blue Lizard. So I went out and bought Sport for me and baby for DD(21months). LAst week when BIL was visiting I mentioned it to him and he said yes that's great and that is what they are now using on my niece(9yrs)

I also have the ray shade and LOVE IT! DH doesn't like the way it looks on our stroller but it protects her and even blocked some rain the other week. I like that I can pull it down and block things out when she really needs a nap and we can't go someplace to take a nap like at Hershey Park the other week.

I just watched a story on our news that highly recommended the BLue Lizard sunscreen. Once I finish what I have I will look for the Blue Lizard.
