No judgement here just wondering- we have a family member who refuses to get ss# for their kids - anybody that might follow suit please tell why ? So they aren't claimed on taxes and have no tax ID # either ? Strange or am I missing something?

Have they ever had an identity theft issue? People have been known to hijack ssn of children to open credit after they have ruined their own.

Did they have the baby at home with no dr or midwife? The hospitals and I'm sure the midwives report the info of the birth not the parents. We never had to appy for one, they just came in the mail after the birth.

so do they not carry insurance for the kids?
the hospital sends in the soc. sec. paperwork.. you fill it out and they send it in for you. before the baby leaves the hospital.

i'm sure later in life the kids are going to suffer for this... you need your ssn # for insurance, work info, social security benefits...

I'm sure they can apply later on

Back in the "old days" babies weren't given SS #s. You didn't get one until you needed it.

Social Security card do not come automatically, the parents have to apply.

Another thing I didn't know, applying for a social security card is not required for a child.
Must my child have a Social Security number?
No. Getting a Social Security number for your newborn is voluntary. But, it is a good idea to get a number when your child is born. You can apply for a Social Security number for your baby when you apply for your baby’s birth certificate. The state agency that issues birth certificates will share your child’s information with us and we will mail the Social Security card to you.

If you wait to apply at a Social Security office, you must show us proof of your child’s U.S. citizenship, age and identity, as well as proof of your own identity. We must verify your child’s birth record, which can add up to 12 weeks to the time it takes to issue a card. To verify a birth certificate, Social Security will contact the office that issued it. We do this verification to prevent people from using fraudulent birth records to obtain Social Security numbers to establish false identities.

And I am not being funny....religious reasons. Sometimes the social security number is seen as a "Mark of The Beast" of sorts and a book of Revelations issue.

Double post, not sure how I did that.

The old days being mid 80s. I didn't apply for a SS card until I went to work as a teenager. Never needed it before hand. My parents had my birth certificate and the church baptismal certificate was enough to get 1.

That's a new 1 on me. Never heard that 1 before.

That's why I put "old day"s in quotation marks. ;)

They had them in a hospital- I was just wondering- I don't know if they have them on insurance, it is kind of funny because he is very "frugal" and we were sure once tax time came around and they weren't getting their child tax credit he would change his mind but nope-- We have heard it might have something to do with "they will be tracked by the gov't" , or "she'll be drafted" :rolleyes1 - and FWIW they are NOT religious in any way- no baptism, not church goers at all ...- It just seems a little strange, we have so many people doing everything they can to get into our country and get a # and they refuse it- oh well I am wondering too what types of hurdles it may cause later.... (and no they don't go to pediatricians, no vaccs, no suger/fast food, and no TV or toys that make noise - not that any of those are connected to the ss# issue just sayin' no judgement..:grouphug:)

You don't need SS#'s for insurance

When I came home from the hospital with my kids I just called and had them added immediately. Obviously I didn't have their SS #'s yet.

I hope your friends plan on Home schooling. No Dr. and no vaccines = no school admittance in most states. At the VERY least a Polio and MMR to get in. The other stuff, the kids can do just fine without. The vaccines, well ya never know.

you have to have an SSN for disability, medicare, medicaid, etc, don't you?
and if they have to wait 3+ months to get a card... that's a LOT of time w/o assistance. sure, NOW, they may not take their kids to a pediatrician, etc, but one day, heaven forbid something serious happens to one of them, they may NEED one of these services.

if they want to live "off the grid", fine... i'd just want to have everything in order in case one day i needed it. b/c if they aren't using the SSN (like for medicare for kids), the gov't won't know what's going on with them anyway.

hmm-most offer exemptions for "personal and religous reasons". Its created a problem with whooping cough here because of the number of parents who get waivers-especially in the Boulder Valley districts. Honestly you dont need a social til you start working-so its not that big a deal-i didnt get one til i was 14-and my kidlets were 10 or so.

Most states will let you enter school if you say you don't vaccinate because of religious beliefs

The OP said they don't practice any religion.

One day when the kids are grown and want to get a job, they will need to get a card.

I'm sure that most people that get a religious exemption aren't really doing it for religious reasons
