No more Disney Dollars?

I'm so bummed! I was in our local Disney store today and they said they are not selling Disney Dollars anymore. :sad1: Does anyone know if this is all Disney stores? They said you could still get them at Disney World, but for me that kinda defeats the purpose of getting them to save for our trips.

They have an assortment of different gift cards and said they are doing the gift cards that can be used at the World.

:sad2: I just found that out too!! I usually collect a little here & there before going to WDW too. We also use them as rewards. When I explained why I prefer the $$ the CM said you can add on to the cards, just bring it back to relaod or increase the amount on the card.
I liked the idea of giving my kids the $$ it was more like money to them.
My DD5 calls the gift cards "credit cards".

This is terrible for parents of little ones. My 6 yo might get the concept of the card, but my 3 yo DD...no way! Santa usually puts the dollars in the stocking, Easter Bunny in the basket, heck, we always give them to the kids for Valentine's day, B-Days, etc. to save on souvenire expense on upcoming trips. Besides, what am I gonna tell the kids at Christmas, "be sure to leave out your GC so Santa can load more onto it" ????

It's a bad idea getting rid of them. Surely it can't cost that much to keep them around. Besides, once I use up everything on a gift card, I usually throw it away...I don't keep a useless card in my wallet...I already have to much in there! :confused3

I guess it will cut down on paper usage...but then there's gonna be more plastic thrown away  You'd think they could recycle the dollars or something, or do they do that already?

For DS the funcard was his first experience of having his own "money", and it worked out REALLY well. And without the worry of losing cash (as disney dollars are considered). We did keep track of it for him, helping him remember what he had left and what he could get for that amount, but still, that's better than if he'd had cash that he wanted to count repeatedly to remind himself of the balance.

If he liked dollars, though, I'd just make up something for him on the computer, and use that as a "place-holder", making sure I put the money for them aside safely so they could be swapped out as soon as possible after getting to WDW or DLR.

I also was disappointed - when I told dh he thought about it and decided that Disney mustve discovered "counterfeit" Disney Dollars - its so hard to catch the crooks in real money - can you imagine with $DD$?

I hate crooks!!

I will miss Disney Dollars - we wont do gift cards because its just too easy to "lose" your money on the plastic strip - who's word on how much is on the card?

Maybe we can still get traveler's checks?

It was so easy to pick some up at the mall. I'd always use my Disney Visa and felt like I was getting more bang for the buck. I still can with the gift card. I just liked having the "cash" to give the kids. Maybe they will get enough complaints and bring them back. :confused3

Oh no! I was hoping to buy a couple at DW for the scrapbook!! Darn! Wonder what they did with all their Disney Dollars?

The people at our Disney Store said you can still buy them at Disney World. Just the Disney Stores aren't selling them anymore. I can't buy them ahead of time for my trip to save, but if you want them for souvinears you can still get them when you are at the World.

Call the Disney merchandice number. We've ordered from them before.

I tried to do this over the summer before our October trip and they wouldn't let me. They said the Disney Dollars had to be purchased in person, not over the phone. When did you do this??? Thanks

Stores used to sell paper gift certificates (some stores still do) and that is the equivalent of Disney Dollars.

Now a lot of stores sell gift cards.

I do not like either gift certificates or gift cards given the problems of counterfeiting (the former) or demagnetizing (the latter). Also with small stores or small store chains or even some large store chains your gift certificate or gift card can become worthless.

Why not give plain cash as a gift?

Whew, thanks for that! I will definitely get them at the World!!

If the strip on the GC gets funky, it doesn't erase the balance, which is kept elsewhere. That's how we can enter the numbers from the back of the GC into the payment spot on disneyshopping.com. And you can simply have a CM enter those numbers into the cash register when making purchases at the parks. This is NOT a concern.

GREAT idea!!! I guess they can collect fuax Disney $$ then we can go to the mall and trade them into a gift card...I don't know why I was thinking just $$ or cards and not a "place-holder" system...lol - thanks!!
