Congress is considering bills that would make it a felony to be in the United States illegally, impose new penalties on employers who hire illegal immigrants and erect fences along one-third of the U.S.-Mexican border. The proposals have angered many Hispanics.

I think the fence is overkill. Fences are useless. The only way to keep illegals out is to tighten up the laws and then enforce them.

Can someone enlighten me on why this angers those that are here illegally? The obvious reasons are, well, just too obvious... more money, better living conditions, etc).... there has to be a moral and ethical reason they're upset. Oh wait, this must be it:

"They're here for the American Dream," said Malissa Greer, 29, who joined 10,000 people in a march through Phoenix, Arizona today. "God created all of us. He's not a God of the United States. He's a God of the world."

I've got to be missing something. While maybe it should be our God given right to travel the globe freely, simply put, it's not. Countries have laws and if you don't want to follow them, then stay home.

But before shipping the illegals home, maybe the government should start fining the companies that welcome then with open arms. This problem might go from a flood to a trickle if the money wasn't here any more.

Just my 2 cents. Let the liberals begin.

I think that America's dirty little secret as to why nothing is done about illegal immigration is because a huge portion of our businesses here in the states, from construction, to landscaping, to textile manufacturing, and so on depends on these workers for be competitive in today's economy. Why do you think that President Bush is so behind a guest worker program, while so many Americans are angred over this type policy? Why do you think that every time the President is asked about illegal immigration, he does this huge song and dance about how America is a nation of immigrants and tap dances around the question? The realistic answer is that American business needs these illegal immigrants to keep our manufacturing economy strong, and yes...I'm going to agree with the President, he is 100% correct on this one.

I think we should look into all those legislators' ancestors, and deport whoever came over illegally.

Well I'm not with the president on this one. You try living in an area with a lot of illegals. They flood the schools with children who don't speak English, therefore driving down the quality of teaching for those who do. They don't consider this their "permanent" home country, are only here for the money and therefore don't care about the neighborhoods/houses/schools etc. We have an entire house of illegals just down the street from us. I know because my neighbors kids go to school with theirs. But the parents refuse to learn English because they only plan on being here a couple years. They work in jobs that cater to them and speak their language to them so they don't have to learn English. What about my American dream? I don't want to be surrounded by those who just consider us a get-money-quick place. I want neighbors I can depend on, socialize with at block parties and know at least a little bit so I can say hi when walking the dog!

Illegal is illegal. If the statute of limitations isn't up, illegals should be prosecuted vigorously and consistently.

Well said!!! :thumbsup2

There was a debate several months ago.

The sides were divided.

1) our country our rules

2) how could we not let them in our country and "save' them.

I say unless you plan on opening your doors to personally house those whom you allow to cross illegally--it is fullish to allow this "leak" to continue.

Immigration laws have changed over the years and unless you are 100% Native American..your ancestors came here "illegally". So it is silly to suggest deporting anyone b/c then the entire country practically would have to be deported.

I'm all for facilitating legal means to help people. But Good Lord--I can't just go sneak into any country I choose to and expect to live for any length of time without getting busted and deported per their immigration laws.

Enough is enough. The country is ever changing. Laws evolve per the needs of the society.

Why must the US forever have an open door--remember that budget deficit? With or without the war--we cannot afford to be this way forever. And way back when--when people came here--they pursued the american dream. They busted their butts. They were not lazy. While some who cross are the same way..many are not and it leaches off of our system.

We complain about the sterotype of our own citizens birthing babies to stay on welfare---well not everyone does that. Yet it is suggested we stop allowing them to leach off the system...when they have done nothing illegal (yeah--remember women's rights--women have a choice). Those who go on disability when they may have some if not all their ability. This is law breaking, is it not? Of course--and people hate it.

Yet any person who crosses the border--oh poor things...we have to help them. It's so bad at home. We should give them a gift basket with their medicaid card, food stamps, and wic checks.

Nothing like the new American dream. No hardwork--just a handout.

I don't get it.

Walls are stupid. They presume that immigrants don't have access to ladders.

The wall we have in mind wouldn't lend it self well to being climbed by "ladders". I think the wall sends a firm message. I say build it.

An anti-ladder wall, you say. Intriguing...

Is it a funny shape?

Agreed. The word 'illegal', for me, is the defining word. If illegal, it's/they're illegal, very simple.

ITA!!

I found it interesting that Vincente Fox said several months ago that he wouldn't permit the wall to be built. How arrogant!

Dawn: Do you consider yourself a Pat Buchanan type isolationist? The last few posts of yours that I have read kinda lead me to believe that you're beginning to lean in that direction.

I don't see that at all. Dawn and I rarely see eye-to-eye on things -- very rarely -- but for a foreigner to presume to say that he wouldn't allow the United States to build a wall on its border is insane. Dawn's absolutely correct there.

Yeah!! Dig 'em up and send 'em back. :rolleyes2

Bicker said it exactly right. If I were an "isolationist", I certainly wouldn't have supported the port's deal.

That's what I think when I see the Great Wall of China.

.

Only the first generation. After that, they are legal US citizens. But that's another debate.

I'm not saying that you are an isolationist...just that I have noticed isolationist leanings in some of your posts lately. I think I know your positions pretty well I have have never known you to lean in that direction....that's why I asked.
