Will you take your kids to school -- or keep them home? [If you are from the DC area.]
:(

**info as reported by Connie Chung on CNN this evening while doing an interview with a DC school official.**

My kids will be going to school, but they don't take the bus.

I considered keeping them out today - more for the traffic problems than anything. They are safer in school than they are out running errands with me - and I had a bunch I had to do today so I ended up sending them late.

I helped out with my son's book fair at school today - and I'm here to tell you the security is TIGHT at his school - and we live in D.C. - about 20-25 miles or so from where the latest murder took place. I can imagine security would be tight or tighter in Montgomery County. I had to show ID before they would let me in the door, and then sign in when I got there. I also felt relieved to see a police car sitting there in front of the school when I got there - in the middle of the day - and the same car sittting there when I left at the end of the day.

And even if I were to keep them home, this could go on for a long time. I can't keep them home indefinately.

I honestly don't know what I would do in this situation! I would like to think I ould drive my kids to school...that way I would knowixactly where they were and knowing how tight security is at the school since 9/11, I guess they would be safe there. But if my kids were really scared I would have to let them stay home.

{{HUGS}} to all with kids in area schools. Hoping for a very peaceful day! I agree that as much normalcy needs to continue as possible -- but it can't make it any easier!:(

Today was the first day that DS expressed a desire to not go to school. We live in Montgomery County where helicopters are flying above the schools (doors open with armed swat riflemen sitting on the floor and leaning out) at opening and closing times. I work directly across the street from a high school and they are flying so low that I could give you an accurate description of the rifleman from my 4th floor window.

The kids are nervous, and rightly so. The media ran the quote from the sniper's letter over and over again last evening. We did not play the news when Ryan was in the room, but the quote ran as a sound bite throughout the evening. Unfortunately, they did it in such a manner that it often appeared as if it were a warning from Chief Moose as opposed to a quote from a letter. Ryan has asked questions and expressed concerns throughout the whole ordeal, but last night his anxiety level was at an all time high.

R&P's Mom, if I see that clip one more time I surely will lose my mind.

TV was shut off last night after seeing that warning 3 times in 30 minutes, and I intend to keep it off. I heard the message loud and clear that our kids are in danger, I sure don't need to be reminded of it every two seconds.

I felt sick sending my kid to school today and probably will feel sick all day long until we are all safe at home this evening.

Oh my stars rp's mom your description is just frightening.

Those poor kids that have to go to school under those conditions. Whatever happened to innocent childhoods? This madman(person) is not only scaring the daylights out of the area residents, but also stealing children's sense of well being and innocence. Horrible :( :(

rp's mom -- i noticed montgomery county school buses seemed to be running in rockville this morning?

there were lots of helicopters around last night too.

{{{hugs}}} to you and your family.

Yep Caity, they're running business as usual. If we followed MCPS guidelines, Ryan would be a walker, but we choose to drop him off and pick him up each day. I leave at 6:15 each morning, so I don't know how many parents are allowing their kids to wait at bus stops these days...probably not many! DH reported that the school drop off area was a zoo this morning which probably confirms that.

We dropped Storm off at school this morning, and it seemed that most other parents were doing the same. Of course, with the 10 or so media vans and satellite dishes outside of his school, we felt he was pretty safe there. :)

I live in Aspen Hill. Yesterday, Storm's school had about 7% attendance (according to CNN). I'll bet they are at about 70% or so today.

Fortunately, Storm is not a worrier. Right now, he's ticked off that he can't go trick or treating, but he feels safe.
