No chip in mugs?

I have been reading an online discussion with recent resort guests (specifically POR and ASMo) that claim the mugs do not have chips and the machines work with any cup. Is this a change? Or are they mistaken? Or maybe a temporary glitch?

Here's a pic one person posted, showing the lack of chip in their latest mug:

I have 10 mugs from various trips dating back to 2013 and as recent as last fall (Oct 2016). I held them up to the light and all 10 have chips in them.

I just went and checked mine...compared my last two mugs: a July 2015 cup with the Mickey resort check in design and my most recent December 2016 cup with the gang in the car driving design...both have chips.

Thanks for the responses so far. Any chance any of you were at POR? That's where the person posting says they stayed, got the mug without the chip, and had a drink dispenser that would fill any cup.

Nope, mine were from Wilderness Lodge and Boardwalk.

I imagine it was a fluke. Imagine how many people would steal drinks without the chipped cups...or maybe they weren't getting soda. Tea and coffee aren't restricted in the same way.

They claim they did get soda, from the dispenser, and there was no "beep" or indication any activation had occurred or was necessary. And that they filled a Yeti directly from the machine without issue. I haven't had a refillable mug for several years, so I thought I'd come here and see if I had missed anything!

It is possible that for a very brief time there were no chip mugs at those resorts during renovations. POR French Quarter was being renovated and had coke freestyle machines that may or may not have been RFID enabled. I believe ASMo had a similar refurb recently as well. In those two cases it would make sense that Disney ordered some with out chips (as they are slightly cheaper) and used them at the resorts during renovations. The big problem would be those cups would not be valid at other locations.

Makes sense, although this was not POFQ, it was POR. Again, I'm just reporting what someone else claimed in an online discussion.

The temporary machines at PORFQ were chip enabled. We stayed at POR in Oct, and walked over a few times, both resorts were chip enabled as of Oct.

Good to know. That was the only theory I could come up with since I haven't heard any news or rumor about the chips going away.

Maybe this was because of the renovations going on to the food court there?
I was there in June, 2016 and our cups have the chip
