No Buy June

Ok here goes, my goal for June:
1-2 fast food
2-dinners out
1-dinner at amusement park
stick to grocery list & eat lunch and dinner at home the entire month.

I'm not planning on "buying" anything this month, other than new baseball cleats for 2 boys. I spend a lot at the grocery store each month, for June I'd like to come in below $800.

I went to the grocery store today, and it was about an hour before lunch and I thought to myself.."we can just go to McDonalds real quick" cuz I had my youngest with me....then I thought of this thread and my goal for the month and said, NO,No,No,No,No and just went to the grocery store instead and came home and ate lunch at home. Gheesh, almost didn't make it the first day, well I'm allowing myself 2 fast food purchases...but holy moly.

Paula - I laughed so hard about not having to buy a bday gift for the Queen :rotfl: For some unknown reason, we celebrated two weekends ago... go figure.

And Australia recognise it next Monday - I wish she'd make up her mind :rotfl2:

I am going to set an overall budget of 800$ for the 5 of us and than break it down in categories starting next month. I guess this is the best way to start?

I found it took a lot of time to get my categories down and found I got most of them and then "tweaked" the names and amounts until they fit our needs. There is no right or wrong way to do it - the key seems to be to just actually just track it somehow to start with and then see what works for you.

LOL I can think of loads of times when I've not spent anything because I'd have to ruin a $0 day and have to confess than I wasted even $1 on something frivolous - you all keep me on the straight and narrow and my bank account thanks you all for it :rotfl:

2nd - $0 (just about to make a extra payment on the mortgage - thats one of my exemptions - I love watching the balance drop, its a beautiful sight :) )
1st - $0

I just wanted to report that as of 1:15 PM Eastern Standard time, I hadn't bought anything! HA! Okay okay, I am not really going to report every little "milestone".

However, I did want to post to say that in addition to having a no-buy June, I have decided to sock away $10 a week (already did it for this week) until our Halloween trip. That'll give me another $210 spending money that I hadn't planned on. I can use it for a nice dinner out then, or just give it to my Mom since her birthday is about a week after our trip.

I still have buying for my daughter's birthday THIS month to contend with, eeek!

It's ok to report every little milestone if you need to-that's how some of us stay on track.

I think when I was doing the march no buy (cold turkey) I posted every day! Sometimes twice! anything to keep me out of the stores :rotfl:.

I started off June with a bang:

June 1: $ 197.45 TJ Maxx

(15 items, average cost $13/item, mostly swimsuits & coverups & shorts, the girls outgrew almost everything from last year and I've never actually had a swimsuit coverup before-we have a pool to go to now and I figured wandering around in the neighborhood in my swimsuit wasn't that appropriate...)

Instead of breaking out the budget into categories this month, I'm going to keep everything under $2,000.

The only exemption for this month is a possible 3 day trip to Disney as a surprise to the kids (we may have 3 days off during the week in late june).

That will be small out of pocket since we have the dvc and the annual passes-I'd just have to buy food for three days and gas (usually 3 tanks total up and back-minivan gets 30 mpg on highway).

Ok! Here is what I got and how I did it.

An exception is Father's Day with $50 gift and eat out at $45.

I tried to do this in April and think I was too ambitious - I tried to make a budget and it got totally busted! Skipped May - baby was born April 30th and no way could I handle budgeting AND babying! So I'm going to try again for June - no budget this time, just tracking spending. Honestly I don't think we do too much frivolous spending, but I guess I'll find out for sure at the end of this month!

I do give up shopping every year for lent so maybe there is hope for me. :)

Everybody does it differently, heck, my habits vary from month to month.

Last month I went "cold turkey" where I tried to see how many days I didn't shop-i.e. spent $0. I had 21 days in May out of 31 where I spent no money. I just took the credit card out of my purse and tried to do anything and everything other than shop. It's not practical to do it every month, but someone had posted in, um, April where they do "cold turkey" every other month and I've decided to do that. This (thank god) is NOT a cold turkey month for me, so sometimes I budget for every category and sometimes I just say, spend less than X. Once I get at or near X, I take the credit card back out of my purse.

I also have a spreadsheet where I put every receipt in and track every penny I spend. That's been very effective for me. I'm going onto my 30th or so week doing it (since we bought the new house), and I like it a lot. Here's what it looks like:

Everyone has their own method, this one seems to be working for me. :thumbsup2

I love the spreadsheet! I might do one too!

Here's my update:

Well, I did great today until my mom called and asked if I wanted to go to the mall with her. I ended up buying a pants outfit at JCPenny for $12 (a deal, but still!), Orange Julius to keep my dd quiet for $5.50 and a Fancy Nancy toy thing from Goodwill for $1.05. Not so great....Oh, and I had to put gas in today :sad2:

6/2
$3 Groceries (actually I bought candy bars from the cub scouts in front of the
drug store when I picked up the prescription I ordered and paid for yesterday so maybe it should be under giving)

6/3
$48 Misc. - newspaper delivery for 3 months - I forgot about this so not in budget.

When the paper lady came to the door she had her little boy with her as usual. The paper lady is a young woman with a 3 or 4 year boy and a very old, beat up car. She parks at one end of the block and she walks up and down the street with the bag of papers but the little boy usually runs a paper up to the door. When the mother came to the door to collect, I gave her the candy bars I had bought from the cub scouts the day before. She semed so happy and told me that there was no money in her budget for treats so the chocolate bars would be divided among her family - told me she has two other kids in school.

- A little off topic, I always add a tip to the quarterly payment instead of waiting for Christmas. I started that because the delivery people changed so often and I did not tip at Christmas, now I feel a little guilty about the not giving her extra at Christmas - she has been our person for more than a year.
