No Bunk Beds in Standard @ WL ?? Huh ??

For the benefit of others here what I just found out ...

I called the hotel number and got the operator ... I then asked to speak to the front desk. At first they weren't going to put me through but I told them I just had a question and that I needed to speak with someone directly at the hotel.

I was put through to the front desk ... the person answering the phone identified themself as working at the front desk. I then explained that I have a reservation in October and was being told by central reservations that WL no longer has bunk beds in their standard rooms. She told me that was absolutely not correct and that there are a limited number of rooms with bunks that are available on a request basis. She then asked me for the names of the people that I spoke to in central reservations ... which I provided her with. She appologized profusely for the confusion and indicated that she would have management look into it.

So while there is still no guarantee ... it is still an available option for which I can call 5 days before I arrive and plea our case.

Hope this helps to clear the confusion.

What are you going to do if you get there and don't get bunk beds, though?

I was going to ask the same exact question. Not sure what the definition of "limited" is, but it sounds like you should really re-consider the FW Cabins, which have guaranteed bunk beds, or have an option B for your bedding concerns.

Are the WL rooms big enough for an aerobed (twin-size)? That will be our plan B if we don't get bunk beds. :)

That probably wouldn't work well at all. While you might be able to squeeze one in, it would really be in the way of something if you did this.

We've squeezed one into Pop Century before (though we had to move the little table over), so I think you should be able to fit one into WL. It will be a bit cramped, though!

I'd go with a twin size aerobed as my choice. You could possibly have a roll-away brought in, but that would take up a lot of space. At least with an aerobed, you only need to set it up for sleeping. In the morning, you deflate it and store it in the closet.

Disney does not have roll aways...so that is never an option.

We have put our Aerobed into WL rooms on more than 1 occasion. There is plenty of room to put it down at night without pinning anyone in and they are so comfortable to sleep on no one ever complains when it is their turn (these are a GIANT improvement over the airmattresses of my childhood!!)

If I was the OP I would pack the aerobed (I just toss ours into a small suitcase with whatever else doesn't fit into everyones bags)and it gets checked with the rest of the luggage...and everyone in the family knows that we have requested X bed arrangement, but if it doesn't happen then the kids can take turns on the aero bed. There is plenty of room to put it down at night without pinning anyone in and they are so comfortable to sleep on no one ever complains when it is their turn (these are a GIANT improvement over the airmattresses of my childhood!!).

An aero bed is a great investment for any family with teen/pre=teen kids....ours gets used most weekends (friends sleeping over - and they seem to stay in larger and larger groups as they get older, kids deciding to sleep in places at home that were not designed for over nights, i.e., the basement, by the fireplace, the rec room, in the tent in the backyard etc)

Just seems like it would be a good safety net...better to take it along and never unpack it than to open the door to the room and find 2 queens and have some really unhappy kids.

Perhaps you meant that WL doesn't offer roll aways. I have first hand experience that other resorts at Disney World do indeed offer them as an option for extra bedding.

Keep in mind the FW cabin bunk beds are in the bedroom, right next to the double bed. Might not be what they had in mind for a honeymoon. ;)

I don't know why WL insists that they still have bunks in the standard rooms....

I'm hoping that you won't be severly disappointed.

 Oops, you're right. With the kids ages, 2 cabins would probably not be an option either. I just think based on the response of the resort CM of "limited" standard bunk bed rooms and the additional requirement of needing them connecting is going to be a difficult request to fill. To the OP, have you checked the DVC threads to see about buying points for a 2 bedroom Wilderness Lodge villa? Sounds like the bedding available there would be a much better fit. I just don't know how the numbers work with your budget.

I believe WL does still have bunkbeds in standard rooms. I reserved a standard room with a request for bunkbeds. When I checked in, we had not received bunkbeds, but
I asked if it was possible. (Not sure where our other room was). Our room was 4046. We were over the service area so I have to believe this was a standard room. I could see trees behind the service area. We were facing MK. We had a great view of the fireworks each night.

I saw at least one other room with bunkbeds on our hallway (over service
area) so I think there are at least 2 if not more. I'm trusting the front desk
as they do the room assigning. I had called prior to our trip and also spoke to the front desk and was told they still had bunkbeds in the standard rooms.

I was at WL Aug 12-20.

Thanks,
Michelle

For what you are paying for two rooms at the WL you could get (if available) a 2 bedroom DVC unit that would comfortably accommodate your group. You would get a king in the master suite ( and a hottub) ideal for a honeymoon , a seperate 2nd bedroom with either 2 Qbeds or a Qbed and a pull out sleeper sofa and a living room (double sleeper sofa) with a full kitchen . Each kid would get their own bed, you would get the privacy you are seeking and the cost would be about what you are currently paying.

There are DVC rooms available at Villas at Wilderness Lodge, Beach club, Boardwalk, Old Key West and Saratoga Springs.

Yes we already have connecting rooms ... one for my new husband and I and another one for the kids. This is a not only a vacation but a honeymoon as well.

Having the two boys share a bed is not an option. This is their vacation too ... and lets face it would you like to share a bed with a practical stranger? Yes we are now one family ... but we really want to make this the absolute best experience possible but there is no way we can afford another $800 to upgrade to a deluxe room.

I guess I need to call the hotel back tomorrow and talk to a manager and see what the scoop is. We specifically picked this hotel because we could get bunk beds. We would have happily booked into one of the cheaper resorts and got two queen beds ... but that isn't what we need.

If there is anyone out there with the name of a manager or some other person at the hotel that I could call please advise.

Thanks !!
Norma

The standard view rooms do not connect, unless you have guarantee connecting rooms on your reservation they will not connect. If they did put in connecting room guarantee on your reservation then you MAY be upgraded to a woods view room when you check in

We do have a guarantee on the connecting rooms. We were told when we booked that due to the 3 kids in the other room that THEY required it. So yes we are absolutely certain that we will be getting connecting rooms.

As for the DVC ... that sounds wonderfull ... but I think we are too late at this point to make that switch or pretty darn close to too late. Our Final payment is due on Sept. 4th (this Sunday).

How do I look into the villa options? We would prefer to stay in the WL but the Beach Club or Boardwalk would be good too.

We arrive on Oct. 19th and are staying until the 25th.

Can we still do the Dining Plan? What about the Magical Express?

I've seen this come up on the boards quite a bit. Does your confirmation state "guaranteed connecting rooms"?

As to the Villas, I checked on line and Disney is not showing any available inventory in the 2 bedroom category. I know if you do book through them, it does include Magical Express. This is the rent/trade DIS board for DVC, http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29 . If I've done the math correctly, I think you need 250 points for a 2 bedroom WL Villa from 10/19-10/25. They're a great group if you just want to check on any last minute availabilities.

Tammi

Yup it is in the printed receipt they sent us back in February ... Guaranteed Connecting.

So if there are no connecting rooms in the Standard category ... then am I correct in what I read ... that they will HAVE to upgrade us to a Woodsview room?

If so that makes me even more annoyed with the central reservations folks. They were trying to convince me to pay an additional $815 for something I would have already received due to the fact there are no connecting standard rooms !!

I think at this point I will just stick with our 2 rooms at WL. I am all "planned out" and can't fathom having to re-do all our reservations at this point. I have spent the entire summer planning to sell my house, selling my house, planning a move to a new country and moving, planning a wedding and getting married ... and in all that having my father in law pass away the day before the wedding.

So now with Disney Reservations and their shinnanigans ... let me just say that Mickey is going to hear from me if they try to squeeze me for more money for something I will already get !!

<sorry for the rant> ... just stressing a wee bit over here :earseek:

I think I will save renting at the DVC for another trip :flower:

Weddings are stressful enough and I can imagine that everything else on top of that must have been very overwhelming.

Definitely bring the confirmation with you in regards to the connecting rooms and go through with your plan to call the resort a few days before you arrive to have them look into your request for the connecting room to have bunk beds. Unfortunately, because that aspect of it will not be guaranteed, you might have to make a compromise when you arrive. They may be able to give you a connecting room with different bedding, or the bedding that you want, just no interior door between the rooms. I can see how much planning you've put into this vacation and trying to blend everyone. It's frustrating when there are certain things beyond our control. With the ages of the boys, could you sit them down and let them know that you are really trying to make it perfect, but if the hotel can't accomodate your requests, would they be okay sharing a bed for a few nights? It might not be as big an issue as you think. Kids are pretty resiliant and most of the things that bother us, seem to slide right off them.

I really do hope everything works out wonderfully for your new family and as there isn't much more you can do with the room situation, it's time to go and plan some honeymoon surprises I think. Maybe give private dining a call at the resort and see about a chilled bottle of champagne. If you're good with a the computer, you can piece together a nice graphic, print it onto iron-on transfer paper and make everybody a t-shirt. Not sure if you and your son have taken your new husbands surname, but perhaps something like "The Smith-Jones first ever Disney Trip" and a clip art picture. I'm pretty good on the computer, but not overly artistic. I'd be happy to try and put something together for you though.

Tammi

Thanks for your kind words Tammi !!

It has been more stressful than I would care for it to be ... but the worst is behind us now (thank goodness).

We have decided to take an airbed with us as our backup plan ... but REALLY hope we don't have to use it.

I hear that the WL has "flag families" who can help raise or lower the flag ... I was thinking that would be cool to do but I need to find out how to request doing that.

We have dubbed this trip our "Vacation Moon" and I had thought it would be cool to do a button or something. I hadn't thought about doing T-shirt transfers ... but that is a great idea !! I am proficient on the ole puter so no probs there. Thanks for that great suggestion !! It would be fun to wear them on our first day

I am also hoping that being on our honeymoon means something to the WL when we check in. I am not expecting or hoping for miracles or anything ... just a simple bedding request is all we really want. As for the champagne ... he doesn't drink ... not at all ... so that wouldn't serve us as a treat. LOL ... what would be a treat is just one day of sanity !!

I think that is even beyond Mickey's powers though :earboy2:

If anyone has any other ideas or suggestions please let me know.

OHHHH ... I did get some good news .... we were able to get a PS at CRT for dinner the night we arrive !! We were also able to get all the other PS we wanted so at least I know we won't go hungry :cheer2:

Cheers,
Norma
