NMAmy's To Do List - 4/26-Update-Page 21-The End

Your back, your back!:cool1: :cheer2: Forget about the mail, the laundry, etc. get to writing chickie!:laundy: Just kidding;) Hope you had a great trip, can't wait to hear all about it!popcorn::

Woohoo! You're back!!

I swear, last week was the week from hell for me...but at times I would sit back and think, well, at least Amy is in WDW having a good time. :thumbsup2: I hope all my good thoughts helped with the fun happenings!

dwaddict: Thank you for the warm welcome home. I wish I could say I'm happy to be back but, well, that would be a fib. I AM happy that we got out of WDW before it got any more crowded, though!

dddisrunner: I'm glad I didn't check back on this thread yesterday because it sure wouldn't have taken much to persuade me to just let all that stuff slide! The laundry is all caught up now and we have food in the fridge so now I can get on with other things!

Mal: That is so sweet! I'm sorry you had a crappy week. I think your good thoughts must have helped us, though, and I appreciate that! Were you thinking of me on Tuesday morning? Because we won a dream that day (no, sadly, not the castle!) and I'd love to give you credit for that. ;)

I'll take the credit for the win! ;) Yay you! Too bad it wasn't the castle, but a little extra magic is a good thing no matter what form it comes in! I can't wait to read the trip report! I want to hear all about the WL.

Hey, guys, I haven't forgotten you but I was working on the first installment when I got a call from my mom's neighbor telling me that my mom was on her way to the hospital in an ambulance. After 2 full days of tests, they've finally come to the conclusion that Mom had a tiny stroke in a part of the brain she doesn't really use. Which was my conclusion 2 hours after we arrived at the ER when I called my sister in a panic and told her to get over here. The doctor was talking to Mom and she couldn't stand up--she kept tipping over.

The ER was frustrating but now she's in a regular room with some grown up doctors. I was ready to smack the first "doctor" she had who told us that every test she'd had came back normal and seemed to be intent on sending her home. When I asked what caused the involuntary movements in her left arm and leg (the whole reason Mom called the ambulance), Young Doctor Surfer Dude told me, "Well, yeah, that part is really weird." My actual comment? "Um...well, as long as we now have a professional opinion." Duh.

ANYWAY, please think good thoughts for my mom--she has some tests today to see if there is blockage in her arteries to the brain.

Once everything is all settled, I'll be back with the first installment which is partially done.

Thanks all!

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear about your mom. I do hope everything is OK. We will keep her in our prayers here!!:grouphug:

You are in my thoughts and prayers. Wishing your mom a speedy recovery and wise doctors. I know how frustrating this can be as I went through this with my father last year.

Niiiiiice. Where'd he go, Acme School of Medicine? Or maybe he's been watching too much House (good for entertainment, not so much for medical knowledge). What a doofus.

More good thoughts for all of you. :grouphug:

UH! I swear it is so scary that some of these crack pot doctors are left alone to "care" for actual people! We have encountered numerous doofus's here in NJ as well! Anyway, sending lots of good thoughts and prayers for your mom!:flower3: Hope she's ok!

Thank you so much, everyone, for all the good wishes. Mom is home now and doing much better. I stopped by her house on the way to work and she told me she'd made Jello in the middle of the night and went online to check her email. She's nervous about driving so I'll be chauffeuring her around for awhile.

Have to catch up at work but wanted to pass on the good news to you all. Thanks again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate you all!

Well, that didn't work. I'm moving photos around now!

Glad to hear your mom is better. Mine has been in the hospital over a week now and they say if and when they let her out she will require 24hour care. So needless to say we will have to find a nursing home close to us:sad1:
But, glad yours is better and at home!!!:grouphug:

Friday, 3/23 - Chapter 1-Getting There

Well, I had a busy night getting ready to go. I took a couple of Tylenol PM and was able to sleep right through the night--although I did wake up a couple of times to see if I could get up yet. It reminded me of Christmas morning when I was a kid. ;)

Of course, I was sleeping pretty darn soundly when Alex woke me up at 4:00 a.m. I was inclined to grumble at first but then I remembered WHY I was getting up at such an ungodly (even for me) hour. Then I cheered right up! I showered and threw my makeup and toiletries into ziplock baggies for my checked luggage. I wasn't taking ANY chances with Security. Everything remotely liquid was going in my checked bag. I'd removed a rogue bottle of lotion, Caitlin's extra asthma inhaler and a tube of Carmex from my purse the other day so I knew I was liquid free!

I tidied the house and changed the sheets on our bed and...well, then, I sat down and waited. I'd been SO well prepared and gotten everything around so early this morning that now I had extra time to sit and twiddle my thumbs. And obsess about weather. So, I watched the Weather Channel to make sure everything would be okay for Cait's flight out of Albuquerque.

Finally...after all that waiting...it was time to go! Woo hoo! I gave Sunny a hug and a kiss goodbye--an extra tight hug that made her roll her eyes at me. Who knew a dog could roll her eyes? But she does--she loves us but she's not a hugger.

The bags were in the car and I drove the long 5 minute trip to my mom's house. Thank heavens she is an early riser, too. We parked our car at her house, transferred our luggage to her car, and she drove us to...wait for it...a gas station/convenience store/Taco Bell. How's that for an exotic vacation? That's it--end of story--we just got a car wash and a burrito and went home. ;) Just joshin' you.

We took a shuttle bus called the Michigan Flyer, to the airport in Detroit. To any of you who live in mid-Michigan, I highly recommend the Michigan Flyer. It was $80 round-trip for a family and the drive you right to the airport. It was fantastic--the buses are new and comfortable, they have wireless access, and they even provide free bottled water. Okay, the Michigan Flyer commercial is now over.

Alex immediately went to sleep along with most of the people on the bus. Except for me and the two little girls sitting in front of me. They chatted with me for the whole ride. They were going to the Bahamas. They had new bathing suits. Pink and lime green so that it would be easy for their mom to find them by the pool. When one little girl grows up, she wants to be a doctor like her mom. She either wants to be an obstetrician or a pediatrician. (She was about 7 so it totally cracked me up that she's decided on a specialty already.) They were so excited that I didn't have the heart to tell them that I was going on a fabulous, exciting, fun-filled trip to Disney World while they were taking a shabby, boring, sit by the pool kind of vacation like the Bahamas. I just told them we were going to Florida and thank heavens they didn't ask for more precise information. Because it's not very nice for a 43 year old woman to go nanner nanner nanner to 2 very sweet little girls who thought that the Bahamas was an acceptable vacation destination. It was obvious their education was sorely lacking.

We arrived at the airport right on time and checked in with Spirit. So far, so good! Our flight was leaving around 11:00 and we'd arrive in Orlando by 1:40. Caitlin was just getting up and getting ready for their 3 hour drive to Albuquerque--the first leg of their trip.

We made it through Security--luckily, that early in the morning, there were not a lot of people in line so it went really quickly. The security folk were chatting about someone who came through the line with a Glock. Apparently, they'd forgotten it was in their bag. I mean, who forgets that you have a loaded weapon when you're going on a plane? I freaked that I had a tiny mystery bottle of hand lotion.

When I'm traveling and trying to get multiple people to a destination, my stomach gets really nervous. Alex was hungry so we had a bite to eat at BB King's restaurant. I never knew this was in the airport--we usually go through a different gate area that only has a really disgusting Quizno's with warm pop—no liquids allowed and the only thing available to purchase is Starbuck’s (yuck, I’m not a coffee girl) and warm Diet Coke. Alex ordered an omelette that he enjoyed immensely--I had scrambled eggs that I picked at knowing I had to eat something but I was just not very interested in it.

Afterward, we found a seat at the gate and Alex read and I pretended to read while worrying that there was no plane at our gate even though we were supposed to be boarding shortly. An announcement came on saying that the incoming flight would be a bit late but they would clean and fuel it quickly and we'd be on our way. Then, almost immediately, they paged Alex and I to the podium. Now, I was in full freak out mode.

Turns out, one of the families that rode the Michigan Flyer with us were not sitting altogether and the kids were fairly youngish. The gate person wanted to know if Alex and I would mind changing seats. Woo hoo—time for our first Disney good deed. Of course, we switched seats. The mother was so grateful; she kept coming around and thanking us. Hey, I’ve been there. Cait was a nervous flyer when she was young and I always hated flying Southwest and worrying about her sitting on her own. Now, she gets all happy when there’s turbulence. She’s a strange one.

When the plane finally arrived, they did get it unloaded, cleaned and refueled very quickly. Suspiciously quickly, if you know what I mean. Oh, great, now I had to worry all the way there that we had enough fuel.

Alex was a few rows back from me. I had a window seat and was seated next to an adorable little girl named Jane. Her dad was on her other side; her mom and brother were across the aisle. Jane was 3 and this was her first plane ride. Did I mention I’m a kid magnet? I love kids and they love me right back. Kids who are painfully shy will plop down on my lap and tell me their life story. Anyway, Jane got through her first take off with flying colors and once the captain turned off the seatbelt sign, I scooted forward and let her sit behind me to look at the tops of the clouds. Hey, everybody should be able to look at the tops of the clouds on their first flight.

The rest of the flight was uneventful except it seemed like it took FOREVER. Jane agreed with me. About 1.5 hours in, she turned to her dad and fretted, “I don’t want to go to Disney World—it takes TOO LONGGGGG!!!”

We finally arrived and disembarked or deplaned or whatever you do in Orlando. The minute we got off the plane, my hair began to curl even more than usual. I have issues with humidity.

We got on the pretend monorail and made it to the terminal. I LOVE riding the pretend monorail when you arrive but there is always this little voice in my head thinking, “When I’m going the other way on this thing, I’ll be going home.” It makes me a little maudlin so I try not to think of it.

As we came down to baggage claim, I made a round past the town car/limo drivers looking for my name. Nothing. Well, that was weird—they’re ALWAYS right there waiting. We decided to pick up our luggage and check again.

It didn’t take very long and I made the rounds again. Still nothing with my name. I was getting a little panicky and was beginning to look for my handy dandy folder of all WDW information. I decided to swing down by the other entrance and there she was. Our Tiffany driver holding a card with my name on it! Whoopee! She got a bit testy when I told her I’d been looking for her down by the stairs but she was nice once we got to the car.

Okay—on my to-do list, I included making a grocery stop. And, for the first time EVER, we actually did it! I’d made up a list because Alex and I tend to be wanderers in the grocery store, retracing our steps a zillion times to get all related items. The girls had wanted a cache of Pop-Tarts, we needed water, Diet Coke, and I even found Diet Vernors which is one of my drinks of choice. I like the no caffeine in the afternoon. We divided up the list and headed in.

You know, there is something really strange about being chauffeured to the grocery store. I guess we can be thankful it wasn’t a limo. It’s even strange for me to have someone besides Alex hop out to open my door. As we were heading in and feeling like Donald Trump (although I guess the Donald would have his bottled water and Pop-Tarts delivered to the hotel), a man came by and asked if we knew how to get to Such-and-Such a Street. I was taken aback. Even in our pastiness, we were passing as locals! Unfortunately, neither of us knew where Such and Such a Street was so we had to admit that we were just tourists.

We split up and divided the list and made it in and out in record time. I mean, I wanted the grocery stop but I REALLY wanted to get to Disney World more!

Our driver helped us load the trunk (and I found myself searching for my car keys on the way out to the car but they were on my mother’s dining room table) and we were finally almost there. Caitlin called and told me they were boarding their flight so all was good.

Now I was all nervous. What kind of room would we get? I’d booked a standard view but I have always been upgraded in the past at the Dolphin but we’d never done this during the busy season. And, oh, my gosh, was it a busy season.

More to come! And there will be pictures from now on. I’m always a bit paranoid when traveling that I will lose the camera so I tend not to take pictures until we arrive. Oh, and I’m sorry to tell you there are NO pictures of food in my trip report. My family thinks I take WAY too many pictures anyway—if I began trying to get between them and their food, well, it just would NOT be pretty.

Glad to hear your mom is better. Mine has been in the hospital over a week now and they say if and when they let her out she will require 24hour care. So needless to say we will have to find a nursing home close to us:sad1:

Lydia

Oh, Lydia, I'm so sorry to hear that. I went through much the same thing with my dad and I know how very difficult it is. :grouphug:

Hooray the 1st installment!:cool1: That was so great that you switched seats. We asked an older couple with no kids to do this last year on Southwest because only me and DS 4 could sit together DS6 and DH couldn't get their seats together and they refused:scared1: Luckily there was a family with teens and they switched! So now I never say anything mean about teenagers!:rotfl: Your off to a good start, can't wait to read more!:wizard:

Yay! Good start!! I love the poor little girls who had to go to the Bahamas. :)

:grouphug: , Lydia. Good thoughts to you.

Those poor little girls, having to go to the Bahamas and not Disney World!:lmao: My kids don't know a vacation without theme parks involved!!:rotfl2:
Can't wait to see pictures!!!
Thanks for the thoughts for my mom!

Friday, 3/23—Chapter 2 - Checking In (for the first time!)

Alex and I were so happy to finally arrive at the Dolphin. Although, I would not fully be in vacation mode until the girls arrived. Alex kept telling me, ‘Try to stop worrying and relax.” I am a mom, therefore I worry, there’s just no getting around that. Hey, I’m 43 and I had to call my mom and tell her we arrived okay.

I was truly shocked when I walked in the lobby and there was a line of people. I think we’ve always checked in at weird times before and never had a line. And they’d taken down that wonderful little express line for Starwood Preferred Guests. I LOVE being a preferred guest. Almost as much as I love having a chauffeur take me to the grocery store.

We finally got our turn and I showed Alex’s government ID and check stub. Oh, my gosh. Did I tell you all about the check stub? I had to make a quick read through the pre-trip portion to make sure I wasn’t repeating myself. Alex had ONE JOB in regards to our vacation. He works for the state. To get the government rate, at check-in we have to show his id and his most recent check stub. Now, of course, the state has stopped issuing paper check stubs so I haven’t seen one in a couple of years. I asked Alex a few months ago if he could remember to get his check stub. Sure, sure, was the reply. Except I don’t have the password. Excuse me? Could you maybe GET the password? I’ve been nagging him about this once a week ever since. He’s a computer guy, for heaven’s sake. Surely he can figure this out. He does networks and telephony and all sorts of stuff I have no understanding of. Alex had Thursday off before we flew out on Friday. I called him in a panic on Thursday and said, “Did you remember to print your check stub?”

Alex: Oh, I couldn’t get it.
Me: WHAT??
Alex: Well, I checked yesterday and they said they’d have to mail the password to me at home and it wouldn’t get here in time.

He’s still calm at this point, if you can believe it. I, on the other hand, was not calm.

Me: YESTERDAY??? You just asked them YESTERDAY???
Alex: Well, it’s not really a big deal is it?
Me: No, it’s not a big deal if you’d prefer to pay over $300 a night for our room as opposed to $189 a night. (I may have sounded a tad hysterical.)
Alex: I’ll take care of it.

He was still gone when I got home but he was allowed in the house later since he had the magic piece of paper in an envelope. Even though he couldn’t access his paycheck stub some lovely lady in Payroll could and she printed it out for him. It’s amazing what the thought of going home to a homicidal wife will do. A homicidal wife is the mother of invention—isn’t that the saying?

But I digress.

Since I had the magical paycheck stub, we were allowed to check in and have the $189 per night rate. Good thing, buster. I’d reserved a standard view room but since I am a PREFERRED Guest, I’ve always been upgraded at the Dolphin before. Except we’d never come during a convention before. The lovely check-in lady got very excited when she saw our room location.

“You have a lake view,” she whispered excitedly to me.

I have no idea what she was smoking. Well, technically we did have a lake view. However, THIS was the view out our window.

17858dolphin1-med.jpg

Word to the wise—don’t ever take a room on the fourth floor at the Dolphin. All those rooms, for some bizarro reason, have a big lattice type thing across them. I’ve always pitied the poor souls stuck in these rooms before. Now I was a poor soul.

After about a minute of disappointment, I got over it. It was only for 3 days—then we’d check into Wilderness Lodge. And, I got what I’d paid for—a standard view of lattice. If I’d paid for a lake view, then I’d have thrown a hissy fit. Apparently, my preferred guest status had been downgraded to “Just Okay Guest.”

It wasn’t too bad once you got right up close to the window. Then you could see the Boardwalk and the lake.

17858dolphin2-med.jpg

So, that was the lake view. If you peeked from between the slats. Also, if you craned your neck to the left and stood just right, I’m betting you could see Illuminations. I didn’t put it to the test, though, so I’m only guessing.

Okay, now that I was over my disappointment, we decided to try to take a nap. Ha. I don’t know what I was thinking but I laid down on that Heavenly bed for about 15 minutes and then I hopped up and told Alex I could not stand it for another minute. I was at Disney World and I was worrying about the girls and I needed something to distract me.

We changed into shorts and headed to Epcot. Next Up: Dinner at Morocco!

ddisrunner: I remember that moment of panic when you realize you aren't going to be able to sit with your child on the plane. Alex sleeps on the plane anyway--it's not like I was missing some scintillating conversation! :rotfl2:

Mal & dwaddict: I really DID feel sorry for those girls! :rotfl: They had no clue what they were missing, though.

Thanks for reading, all. I wonder how I can get this moved over to the TR Board
