Day 2 - Is That Susan Lucci?
You will notice a pattern develop on our trip. We did not ever get up early to go anywhere. After our late evening dancing to the wee hours of the morning, the wife decides she would like to go the Disney Studios for Super Soap Weekend. I was going to avoid this park on Saturday for fear of the mob of people that I thought would be there. We wake up around 9:45 AM to get ready. We are finally in the park around 11:30. There are a lot of people in the park today. I prepare myself to use fastpasses all day. I notice the sign that Kelly Ripa from Regis & Kelly will not be present due to scheduling conflicts. Oh well.
We immediately head for Tower of Terror and Rock N RollerCoaster. The standby line is 15 minutes for Tower of Terror. That's not bad for the park to be so crowded. I haven't been on this since 1996. The drop sequence was different, but it was still awesome.
We then dash for Rock N Rollercoaster. This will be our first time ever on this ride. The standby line is 20 minutes. Tower & Rock are Disney rides at their best. The pre-ride entertainment for the coaster is great. Our turn to ride comes up and this is one of the most thrilling rides that I've had in a while. It takes off so quickly, that we don't have time to scream. I kept my eyes open the whole time. I don't want to miss a thing. Get the Aerosmith reference
. The soundtrack is pumpin and the ride is fast and smooth. MGM studios has and probably always will be my favorite park at Disney.
Next on the agenda is the Great Movie Ride. Standby line is 15 minutes as well. I still enjoy this ride as well. But perhaps it's time to update the movie clips just a bit. I also enjoy this ride because it gives you a little time to rest.
As we continued throughout the park, we find that for as many people are here they aren't going to attractions, but they are there to see the soap stars. I personally could only name a few that I saw taking pictures and signing autographs. We head over to Star Tours. Most of the time when we get in line for this it is at least 30 minutes. We walked right on and boarded. I've never experienced that in Disney before even with traveling in the off season.
Our next stop after our Star Tour is MuppetVision. Again we are allowed into the attraction with no wait. It is still a classic attraction in Disney. I still get a big laugh in the pre-show with Kermit and Gonzo's conversation.
Kermit: Stop that foolishness now!
Gonzo: What foolishness would you like to see.
We have worked up a hunger. We stop in at the Sci Fi Dine-In. We should have made reservations when we arrived at the park, but it just slipped my mind. We sat for about 25 minutes waiting for out table. It was worth it. Our waiter was a great guy and the burgers were delicious. Oh yeah, the milkshakes were awesome. We also had a good time with the movie clips and cartoons that played through our lunch.
We wrapped up lunch and continued visiting the attractions, we stumbled across Drew Carey's Sounds Dangerous. We're not big Drew Carey fans but this is still a good attraction. I never thought something besides Alien Encounter could be this dark inside.
I am now determined to see Who Wants To Be a Millionare. I just have to look at the map and find it. As soon as I think we're heading in the right direction, we aren't. We come across a bunch of people waiting in line. Maybe this is it. Nope! I look up just in time to see Susan Lucci coming out to sign autographs! We bought a great digital camcorder for this trip. It allowed me to get a great shot of her without having to stand in line.
Oh I still haven't found WWTBAM. Our journey continues. Hey that ice cream bar looks good. We both said that at the same time. I guess this means that we get ice cream.
We finally found WWTBAM. The next to the last show is booked solid. The CM says to come back for the last show which starts at 5:30. We make it a plan to be in line at 5:00. We decide to do Tower of Terror and Rock N Rollercoaster again. Each of those lines is only about 15 minutes for stand by. That fits right into our schedule.
We make it back over to WWTBAM at 5:00 for the last show at 5:30. I loved it. But even I couldn't get some of the answers correct. A 12 year old from our state Illinois made it to the hotseat. We cheered him on wholeheartedly. The phone a friend option is hilarious.
As we let out of WWTBAM, we receive word that the Soap Stars would be participating in the final parade of the evening. My wife wanted to hang out and wait. We did. Not much of a parade.
In the meantime, the CM asks us if we have ever seen Fantasmic. We said no. She highly recommended the performance to us. Today we would not have been able to see it. We promise her that we would see it before the end of our trip. We were to late to do it today. Boy are we glad we saw it later. What a show!
We return to the Dolphin to freshen up before we head out for dinner and shopping on International Drive. We decide to try Bargain World because we had a coupon from Florida Orlando Tickets. Bargain World had lots of bargains. We stocked up on souveniers for family, friends, and ourselves. We elected to have Dan Marino's Tavern and Grill which is at the Point Orlando mall. We shared an order of ribs and a margarita. The food was really good. Trust me if my wife will eat it, as picky as she is, then it must be edible. This time Pleasure Island is out of the question. We still decide that based upon the crowds that we can still get to the parks between 11 - 12 and still see everything.
I'm sorry my trip reports will be coming in longer intervals. When I got back to work I found out that they layed off 10% of our office. So I have been quite busy picking up the pieces. We have also just found out that we will be able to come back to Disney in August 2002 for 4 days and then do a Carnival Cruise. Needless to say, we are quite excited.
Hopefully my reports will keep coming before my memory gets to foggy.
