NJ & Sandy

Sorry to hear about BIL's mother.

They started letting people onto LBI at 7am. We went out around 6am for coffee and rode toward the checkpoint area . There were already dozens of cars waiting. Later on I heard the line was backed up 5 or 6 miles, past the Garden State Parkway. In addition, there were lines in both directions on the Parkway waiting to exit at Exit 63. I heard they eventually stopped checking for ID because the lines were just so long.

The entry town to LBI, Ship Bottom, looked relatively OK. Streets were clean, not any significant damage. Going south into Brant Beach, the Boulevard was clear, but there was still piles of sand down some of the side streets. We passed about a half dozen homes that look beyond repair. When we reached all those little communities (Beach Haven Crest, BH Gardens, BH Terrace, The Dunes, etc.) the boulevard narrowed from 4 lanes to 2 in many spots because there there mountains of sand and all kinds of debris piled up. The parking lot of the Acme supermarket had become a giant dumping ground.

Reaching Beach Haven proper, the streets were clear again. My house fared surprising well. It's elevated, so no water got in. A few of the lattice panels covering the pilings were missing or beat up. The yard was covered in all kinds of broken plant matter and miscellaneous other debris. The mailbox and its post were gone. The bottom two Trex steps on the outside stairs were missing. Garage doors got buckled and crunched up. About 2 or 3 inches of muck in the garage. Muck line on outside garage wall about 3 feet high. Outside shed lifted off its foundation and deposited about 15 feet away in a tilted, cockeyed position. But no damage to the interior of the house itself. Had to throw out all the food in the fridge and freezer.

We shoveled the muck out of the garage and hosed it down the best we could. Water was running but no electricity or gas. Not sure if the shed can be salvaged and put back on the foundation. Cleaned up the yard debris as well as possible today. Helped the neighbors a bit. Gathered some clothes, books, and a few other items and then left. Nothing much more we could do.

Driving back we noticed people in lower-lying houses had piles of soaked furniture, mattresses, appliances and other damaged items outside their homes. So comapred to them we fared OK.

Overall, it doesn't look as bad as I had originally feared. Didn't go to the beach to see how it looks. But I heard the pavilions at Pearl Street and 5th Street are gone. The outside of Buckalew's looks OK. There were people working there both inside and out cleaning up.

Not sure how bad Holgate is. It's still off limits. I wonder if those trailers in the trailer park washed away. North Beach was also off limits, but you have to pass through NB to get to Harvey Cedars, Love Ladies, and Barnegat Light.

Yes, thanks Alabama Power. They were in the area I evacuated to for several days and got the power back on quickly. They seem to have left the area by Saturday since virtually everyone here in Manahawkin now has electricity. Glad they're going to places that still need them.

When leaving LBI, I noticed a dozen or more trucks from Delmarva Power at a staging area at the entrance to the island. Hopefully the rest of LBI will be restored soon. But natural gas is going to take a while, maybe a long while.

There's talk of allowing some residents to return permanently by the weekend, depending on how this expected nor'easter affects things.

Jim

So glad to hear things are better than expected. Especially your beautiful remodel (I guess that was the house on the Island)--you know I loved that!!

That really sounds good. My friends parents live on the lagoon in Beach Haven in a house not on pilings so their whole downstairs was totally flooded out but they were safe and got to the daughter's house in Manahawkin.

I actually cried at the loss of the 5th street pavilion. I saw pics along the way and knew it did not stand much of a chance. I have paintings of the the lighthouse and the 5th street pavilion hanging in my spare bathroom--very dear to my heart. I'm hoping when they rebuild them (the pavilions) that that keep it simple and keep the charm instead of building something fancy.

Happy to hear my namesake weathered the storm and cleanup has begun. :)

Thanks for posting and keeping us up on what's happening. You all are still in our prayers and I'm hoping the storm keeps downgrading for later this week.

Java---I'm hoping you get to a shelter or hotel soon if your power does not get back on!!

And to the poster whose son's teacher called to check on him...:teacher::cheer2:

Is there any way to get to a hotel that has some heat? I am so sorry! I hope you get heat very soon!

All booked thankfully a friend offered us her home tomorrow for the snow storm. They fed us last night too! People are being so kind. Warms my heart, if not my body:rotfl2:

These disasters bring people together. Glad you have people that can help.

We didn't get water last time but below us did. My car would have been under if I hadn't moved it. I guess I'll move it again. Everything is still tied down. Yikes.

Schools are calling half day. They are not worried about damage. The concern is some areas are still very wet and the flooding will return. It won't be as bad as Sandy but there will be some problems. I am concerned about the cold and folks who don't have heat yet.

Snow in our area tonight, I pray that the damaged areas won't be hit too hard. We just got power back today after 10 dAys without, which was awful, but I'm grateful my house is standing intact.
God Bless all the victims of Sandy's wrath, please try to stay warm and safe my friends!

We have 3 inches already. The trees and wires are so low with the heavy snow. Praying the lights stay on for everyone.

Wet heavy snow here too. My dogs are thrilled. We got out gen back from in-laws and the gas cans, so we are ready again, if need be.

Supposed to be in the 60's on Sunday.

The snow isn't stick here but my mom lives 15 min away from me and it is sticking there. Our lights keep dimming and going off. We cranked up the heat just in case. Extra blankets out, flash lights out, etc.

Praying everyone is safe. NJ needs a break!

Did FEMA close their offices in NJ the way they did in NY due to inclement weather?

Been watching this storm on the news and online..... Praying for all of you. :grouphug:

I think they said last night they were going to be closed today in NJ.

Anyone know where to find forms to get assurance for the food we lost? I heard we could apply for that?

This is the beginning of November isn't it? I mean I didn't enter a time warp somehow and this really is January?? Then why do I have 2 inches of wet snow? Really strange weather we've been having lately.

Hope everyone is safe and warm tonight.

We actually had FEMA out after the last big one, we had lots of flooding in our finished basement. They gave us a low interest loan for $10,000 - but nothing for free.

Hi neighbors to the north. I am truly sorry for all that you are going through. I am about 2 months ahead of you in recovery. Over 7,000 homes flooded for the first time ever in our area due to Hurricane Issac.

Don't expect too much from FEMA. I say this not as a gripe, but to help you know what to really expect. I have flood insurance and homeowner's insurance. I got a partial reimbursement of the dehumidifier we bought. I was just last week given $220 towards the over $2000 in roof damage that was way under my hurricane deductible. We have been told repeatedly that FEMA does things very differently now due to the way people in our area behaved after Katrina.

Flood insurance does not cover lost food. Neither has FEMA. This would have to be covered under Homeowner's. Since I didn't hit my deductible, I am just out of luck.

We have been offered a low interest SBA loan that we are considering.

Also, expect insurance to move slowly. It took over 2 months to get my settlement and I had an adjustor out a few days after the water was out. By then, we had gutted our home. Some companies are being very unfair. I have been blessed to be treated fairly. Then, you may have to work with your mortgage company to get the draws. This has taken over 2 weeks with me having the paperwork already filled out.

Be careful of these out of state disaster companies that are probably roaming your neighborhoods now. Some in our neighborhoods were scammed by these people. They charged ridiculous amounts and didn't even finish the work. Check references and licenses on contractors. There has been contractor fraud in the area too.

The best advice is to be patient. (I know this has been hard for me.) Keep documentation of everything. Save all receipts. Some expenses will be a tax credit. Take pictures of everything. As a friend keeps telling me .... "It is a marathon not a sprint!"

We are praying for you guys!
