NJ & Sandy

No, news story! A friend's DH is up there and told her. They are from Alabama. They are yelling go home, we don't want you here! You suck! stuff like that

Again what state? What power company? What crew? It is absolutely pointless to make a sweeping statement and expect people to not only believe you but to react and do something when you have no facts to back it up.

Is this Sussex Rural workers? PSE&G? AC Electric? First Energy? ConEd? Orange and Rockland? LIPA? That's just a few.... who should we be complaining about and who should we be complaining to?

Thanks for checking in LBIJim. Hope things work out for you.

From an article on BrickPatch, Gov Christie said:

Repopulating the barrier islands will take time, he said.

Were going to let you on there as soon as we have made it safe for you to be on there, said Christie, adding that Long Beach Island fared significantly better in the storm than the Barnegat Peninsula and would probably be open sooner.

Its not that I dont want you to go and see your homes, he said. Its that I want you to be safe when you go and see your homes.

Based on everything I've seen, LBI, while damaged, is relatively lucky. No doubt some individual homes may have been destroyed beyond repair, but as a whole, LBI survived fairly well. Barnegat Peninsula to the north looks much worse. That new inlet created at the Mantoloking Bridge is the worst. Looks like the ocean cut through another new inlet a few miles north also. Many destroyed homes in Seaside Heights area and the amusement piers are in ruins.

From satellite photo closeups, my house is still there, but there's not enough detail to see any damage. Perhaps late next week we'll be allowed back to check on things. But I doubt we'll be back living there before Thanksgiving at the earliest. Fortunately I have a warm safe place to live until then. I know that's not the case for some others. A place called Cedar Bonnet Island just outside LBI was hit hard. Many of the houses on the south side of the causeway have "Condemned---Unsuitable for Human Habitation" signs on them. Same with some homes in an area not far away known as Beach Haven West. Most of these were permanent homes, not vacation ones. These are the people who are suffering. I'm fortunate.

Such heartbreaking news and pictures from the area. I feel so sorry for everyone affected. :sad1:

We went through a devastating tornado in Ohio, and moved to Florida just in time for some devastating hurricanes, so I feel your pain. Things do get better, but restoring everything seems so painfully slow at first.

Are you worried now about the next system that the weather guys say might be heading your way next week? Ugh, it reminds me of Florida in 2004 getting hit by Hurricane Charley, followed by Frances and then Jeanne.

Please stay safe everyone! :grouphug:

The National Weather Service is becoming increasingly concerned that a “tortuously slow” nor’easter could bring high winds, coastal flooding, heavy rains and inland snow to New Jersey by mid-week, which could seriously disrupt recovery efforts in the storm-battered Garden State.

The storm isn’t expected to be anywhere near the intensity of Hurricane Sandy, but could pose a larger threat because New Jersey has been left extremely vulnerable due to the damage suffered during the storm.

“If the forecast track doesn`t change spatially, this would have us forecasting a relatively slow-moving nor`easter sometime in the Tuesday night through Thursday night time frame,” wrote Mark Delisi, a forecaster at the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly office, in his morning forecast. “Heavy rain, strong winds, tidal flooding and the possibility of some snow northwest are in play. This system does not look as potent as Sandy, but (a nor’easter of this strength) moving up near the coast would be significant.”

Winds could reach 50 miles per hour during this storm, the weather service said, stalling efforts to restore power and causing additional outages. Buildings compromised by Sandy could be further damaged or destroyed by additional coastal flooding, particularly since many protective dunes have been washed away or significantly eroded. And any inland snow could disrupt recovery efforts in the northern and western parts of the state.

Delisi noted that we are still days away from the system affecting the region, and forecasts could change. The potential exists for a strong storm to affect New Jersey in the coming week, however, and New Jersey residents should continue to monitor forecasts.

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine and her DH and others were turned away because they are NON-UNION!!!! So, basically your local people only want help from the union! You guys need to complain because that is horrible. Hopefully, it was a mistake and your local governments will fix the issue and ream some people out!

No, news story! A friend's DH is up there and told her. They are from Alabama. They are yelling go home, we don't want you here! You suck! stuff like that

Interesting, but total BS.

So please ask your friend to find out EXACTLY where her dh is working.. My dh works for the utilities here in NJ ( and knows people from all the other local utilities) and works with Mutual aid and he said that is NOT HAPPENING HERE. So instead of keep spreading this rumor..find out for us where this is happening..and if it is true dh can look into it.

Around here we are feeding the wokers no matter where they are from. We are happy to see anyone working and I am sure everyone else feels the same way.

My friend's house in Beach Haven is standing. They have 5 feet of water of which they pumped out 2 yesterday. :(. My other friend in Belmar doesnt think she fared as well. As of now she can't get to the house. There is a webcam near her home and she is not seeing it on there. She should be able to!

Heading out to get some donuts for my family and the workers near my house.

DH will be leaving here today or tomorrow with his National Guard unit to aid in some of the recovery. We're not sure if he's going to NJ or the city yet.

My prayers are still with all you guys being affected by this mess!

Jim do you have the link for the sattelite image you are using to look at your house? I'd like to get a look at my in-laws house if I can. Thanks!

Exactly. No help is being turned away. I don't know where stories like this come from, or what motive is behind them, but this is simply untrue.

This was addressed in local news reports. Yes, it happend, but not by the powers that be. Christie addressed this in a press conference days ago, said it was mistake, and no one was supposed to be turned away, all are welcome and wanted.

ETA The FB page for Ocean County Police Blotter is loading more pictures of our coastline, if there's anyone who wants to try and see a home located here. They have been awesome in keeping everyone up to date with photos, news, donations, etc.

Thank you for clarifying....obviously people choose to believe what they want to.

There's a great page on FB that just showed pics of over 4000 utility workers
from around the country and Canada that have set up camp at Great Adventure in Jackson NJ
to help with the efforts. I know alot of them must be from out of state because they have no
front license plates on the vehicles, and here in NJ, we have front plates. So, again, thanks to
all the people from out of the area who have come to help! (am I allowed to paste this link?)
