Day 1 – Exodus from New Jersey.

Crew: DH, DD1, DD2 and me (DW)

Although we got to sleep around 10-ish, DH wanted to take a shower before leaving for the airport so I had to set the alarm for 2:00 a.m. Uggh! Once DD2 heard us up, she woke up due to excitement and never went back to sleep. The game plan was to leave our house around 3:45 a.m. and head to Atlantic City for our flight to Orlando.

Well, we got all 9 pieces of luggage (4 of them carry-on’s) in the vehicle and we headed for Atlantic City. DD2 took her pillow and was going to sleep, but never did. Very few vehicles are on the Garden State Parkway at 4:00 a.m. but we saw ALLOT of deer! We arrived at the Atlantic City Airport around 5:00 a.m. and were able to drop off our luggage and check in a curb-side. Once that was done, I left the crew at the terminal and went to park the car in long-term parking -- $4.25 per day—can’t beat it!

We went through security and arrived at our gate about an hour before departure. At this point in time we heard the name “Nicholas!” for the first of about 50 times within a 45 minute period. We were desperately hoping Nicholas and his family were not sitting anywhere near us on the plane!

This was our first venture flying out of Atlantic City and using Spirit Airlines. I must say we were quite happy with the flight – it was on time and our luggage arrived when we did. Our flight was uneventful. DD2 and DH were able to sleep on the plane. DD1 tried to sleep, but she is like me and can’t sleep well on planes. Our flight was a little early and we arrived in Orlando shortly after 9:00 a.m.

We made it down to the baggage area where we put DH and DD2 in a corner with our carry-ons while DD1 and I waited for the luggage. Now, you may wonder why I seem to deal with everything and DH does not – DH suffered a stroke about 5 years ago and is not as mobile as he once was – also his speech was damaged due to the stroke so his communication skills are difficult unless you are used to him. Our luggage arrived and by the time DD1 and I got our luggage back to the corner where we left DH and DD2, our driver from Golden Limo was waiting for us – Pete. Pete assisted us with the luggage and showed us were to wait while he got the limo – once inside he had Shrek playing on the two t.v.’s in the back of the limo – also had cold bottled water and soda for us. Our only request was a short stop to pick up two cases of water – Pete was very accommodating and once we had that secured in the car, we were off to the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

We arrived at the Animal Kingdom Lodge around 10:30 a.m. We were met by Bell Services who helped unload our luggage and gave us a ticket stating they would hold the luggage until we checked in and called for it. There was a greeter at the front door of the lodge who greeted us kindly and inside we went.

The lobby of the a AKL is quite impressive. DH and DD2 immediately went to look out at the savannah’s while DD1 and I entered the check-in line. All CM’s were assisting guests and there was only one person in front of us checking in – we thought this was a great beginning to our vacation! When it was our turn to check in (3 to 5 minute wait), an older lady came out from somewhere and offered to check us in. While she was okay, she was very limited in her conversation – told us nothing about the AKL – only that our room was not ready and this was the number to call after 3:00 p.m.

At this point in time we were hungry so I asked her about buses to Downtown Disney and she replied that “you don’t want to go there this time of day” – why I still don’t know. We walked outside and asked the greeter where the bus stops were – she directed us to the path leading down to the bus stops. The stop for Downtown Disney is the last one down the path, and there was a bench so we sat down and waited.
