Nick Cannon - Whiteface

I don't have enough information to make an opinion. I would need to know more about the album. Is it racist?

It's all about context. Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder, that girl that dressed up as Crazy Eyes, the Wayans brothers in White Chicks... all not offensive. At least not to me.

Minstrel shows... offensive.

I also need more info. My instinct says "not offensive" just because I find Nick Cannon very entertaining. For me, it's only offensive if it's not funny :lmao:

I'm not offended by the white face.

What offends me is that Ted Danson had to apologize for wearing a black face, but this guy can get away with doing the same thing?

Yeah, THAT offends me. It is hypocritical.

I just saw this on FB. I don't think it's offensive. I know many would be offended if it was a white person wearing dark makeup. I think it's more because there is a racist history tied to black face and there is no such history with white face.

Didn't find "White Chicks" offensive; don't find this offensive.

me either but there are plenty of people who feel that any white person dressed or made up to look like a black person is offensive. I do wonder if these same people feel the same when its reversed. I'm guessing no.

Never heard of him. What does he do?

He's Mariah Carey's husband. I think they met when he was helping choreograph a music video? They got married so fast it gave people whiplash. :rolleyes1

I think it's really funny, I didn't even recognize him in the pic!

He also hosts America's Got Talent, among other things :)

I think it's harmless. It doesn't seem as if he's trying to stereotype white people...if such a thing is even possible.

Personally, I could not care less, but what IS offensive is the fact that Julianna Hough wore black face for Halloween, and the media was all over it calling it offensive. I can't understand how it was offensive, she was just dressed as a TV character. But it was a black character, so it was immediately seen as offensive, and the backlash was so severe that she felt compelled to apologize.

At the time I'm writing this, I haven't seen any media reports calling Nick Cannon's white face offensive.

If anything, I'm offended by the double standard. It irritates me that Julianne Hough was recently raked through the coals for an innocent well-meaning Halloween costume when no one bats an eye at this very intentional act..

Never heard of him. What does he do?

He does the Disney Christmas Parade :)

I don't think this is racist but I don't find most things racist that people make a stink about. Even if I did find it racist I wouldn't care, I just wouldn't buy his album. With the ridiculous double standards in America I wouldn't be surprised if the people that scream racism the loudest about black face are perfectly fine with this and the people that normally laugh at black face are the most offended by this.

Racism has become the new "crying wolf". Don't like the presidents policies? you're racist. Don't like rap music? You're racist. Dress in black face to roast your black girlfriend? you're racist. Dress in white face to promote a new album (and getting incredible amounts of free press!)? you're racist.

No matter what you do someone (or some political action group that can capitalize on it) will be offended based on their race, sex, religion, political affiliation, economic status, location, etc, etc, etc.

I've always wondered why people look for reasons to upset themselves.

I'm curious how Disney will react though since they tend to distance themselves from anyone or anything that is controversial.

No, it's not offensive. "Whiteface" is not an act with centuries of real, raw history behind it. But then, I'm one of those silly white people who actually understand how oppression and discrimination work and I know I'd be wasting my breathe explaining those concepts here, so I won't.

OK, I'll bite. I'm also a silly white person, and I certainly know my history fairly well, but I'm curious what secrets you know about oppression and discrimination that elude the rest of us? I ask only because you were quite emphatic that the average DISboard person would not be able to grasp the higher level concepts that you are referring to?

And for the record, I didn't find Nick Cannon wearing whiteface offensive at all.

Don't find it offensive at all. Just like I wouldn't find someone having a black face offensive at all. Yes, one being offensive and one not being offensive is a double standard IMO.
