after the character in Superman (his father, I think).

Celebrity baby names are getting weirder and weirder. Don't they understand these poor kids have to go to school with these names???

Yeah, I bet he'll never get beat up on the school bus! What if he turns out to be not very tall or strong? Don't people think about these kids having to carry these names forever? What ever happened to just plain Bob?

I think it must be some kind of rule that you have to name your kid something awful if you are a celebrity . . .

this cracked me up this morning when I heard it on the radio.
the 2 morning hosts were talking over each other about it...then there's a lull and the "producer" of the show says..."That's weird"...it just cracked me up for some reason.

Interesting fact I learned today...Nicholas Cage is France Ford Coppola's nephew? His last name is actually Coppola (sorry if I'm spelling that wrong)...but he changed it to "make it on his own".

never knew that

Moon Unit and Dwezzle Zappa have a book coming out on this soon. I think the Prelude is written by Cody Gifford. Hey listen it could be worse He could have named him Bird.

Isn't Superman's dad Jor-El?
Still, I don't know what the deal is with Kal-El. It looks weird and sounds weird to say, if in fact I am pronouncing it right. :confused3

Yeah - Superman's given name is "Kal-El"

I guess "kal" for short (like Cal/Calvin) is the best the kid can do

Yes, I think his dad is Jor-El, and Superman is Kal-el. Either way, it's still weird :cool1:

I agree that the reason for the name is a little off the wall, and we could have done without an explanation.

Some celebrity names are definitely strange. In this case, though, I think the natural nickname, Kal, is nice. Sounds masculine but friendly. It could be worse--"Apple" comes immediately to mind.

Not only is Kal-El Superman's Kryptonian name, but Nicolas Cage adopted the last name "Cage" from a Marvel Comics character named Luke Cage.

Nicholas Cage is a huge comic book collector - and Superman especially. When I heard the name for his son I was really not all that surprised. Poor kid!

That is just weird.

I'm more surprised he didn't name him Elvis, considering his fascination with the guy.

Maybe he isn't such an Elvis fan after being married to Lisa Marie for 5 minutes :earseek:

He will go to a Hollywood school where all the other kids are going to have weird names too so it won't be a biggie.

I saw an interview with Gwenyth Paltrow the other day and she said her DH named her Apple because of her big round red cheeks. I kind of thought it was cute after I heard the reasoning.

Poor kid. Sounds like Nick has been smoking too much kryptonite lately.

Since day 1, I've loved the name Apple for Paltrow and Martin's daughter.

Kal-El...is kinda out there!

Honestly, most celebrities name their kid something strange. And once those kids go to school, they will all fit in. In fact kids named John or Karen might be the weird names of the class because they are the different ones.
