So excited to plan our November trip. i think I'm becoming obsessed with this site and a few hundred others!! A couple questions.....what is the VISA offer and what are the bennies and what/or who do you have to be to get a PIN? thanks!!!!
Nobody knows how PINs are distributed. There are a lot of theories but at the end of the day some people get them and some don't. Some have said they went online and ordered a vacation planning DVD from Disney and then got a PIN. One time I booked ADRs and not a resort and then I got a PIN (my theory is they knew I was coming but assumed I was staying offsite so they were trying to entice me with a discount). Late Fall last year I logged into my account and started looking at resorts this Fall hoping it would trigger them to send me a PIN...but nope! Haha - I tried!
The Disney Visa Rewards card is a Chase Visa credit card. There's the basic with no annual fee and the premier with a $49 annual fee I think. That the one I have. The benefits are you can sign up and get a signup offer. Sometimes it's $50 statement credit for the basic and $100 for the premier. And they wave the annual fee for a year. Now I think I saw the other day it was $100 statement credit for the basic and $200 for the premier. Sometimes people get offers in the mail for signup offers of up to a $250 Disney Gift Card. Then with the basic card you get 1% on purchases towards reward points to use for anything Disney related. With the premier card you get 1% on most purchases but 2% on Disney purchases, gas, and groceries. And you can use your points for Disney purchases or flights. I've done both. And a lot of times Disney special offers open up to cardholders a week before the general public. And you get 15% off tours and 10% off some Disney restaurants.
It's not the best rewards credit card overall but if you are planning a Disney trip it can help a lot.
For example, you are going in November. If you opened up the premier card now you'd have to meet whatever purchase requirement they have for the $200 credit and then you could go purchase one set of tickets - say a 3 day park hopper set which I think runs around $360, give or take. Apply the $200 credit and you'll pay $160. If you are married your spouse can do the same thing and you'll save $400. Then between now and when you have to pay your vacation in full you put all your purchases on this card. Let's say with gas, family groceries, dining, cell phone bills, etc. you spend $2,000 a month. That's a minimum of $20 in rewards, but since groceries and gas are 2% it will be more - probably $30. Let's say your 45 day mark for your trip you have to pay October 1 then between May and September you earn $30 x's 5 months you'll earn $150 towards your vacation. I say September because you have to order a redemption card and have enough time for it to be mailed to you by October 1. I wish they could just link the two systems so they could apply the credit through the Disney travel line so you didn't have to make sure to order the card in time, but they can't yet. Then once you purchase your vacations, let's say it's $2,500, you'll get 2% points on that for $50. Then you can earn some more before your actual trip and get another redemption card at the park for a little extra pocket money.
So this is just an example. Your spending habits may or may not make it worth it and you must, must, must pay the card off on time every month or the interest will outweigh any savings benefit you earn from points.
If you have good credit you can also look at an airline based credit card and can usually get enough of a signup bonus to pay for a couple of tickets!
Edit: I just went and looked on the website and you can earn 2% on dining on the premier card as well. But the signup bonus is the standard $50 for the basic card and $100 for the premier. Not the $100 and $200 I stated above, although I do see that on occasion.
