What's interesting is there in NOTHING in theaters until at least mid-February. If this movie is well received - which seems to be the case, it not only will have a huge opening but will have "legs" similar to what happened with Avatar. ("Meh - there's nothing else out, let's see Star Wars again") I think there's zero chance - again if received well - it doesn't beat Avatar's $760 million domestic take.

(If Disney was smart, they would wait until late-January, and re-release the OT to theaters for one week at a time. Talk about pumping the market.)

By the way - interesting fact - Star Wars (the original) is still #7 all time at the US box office, and when adjusted for today's ticket prices, it's Domestic Haul would be $1.485 BILLION - which is 2nd all-time behind Gone with the Wind. Of course, that is sort of cheating, as it made $137 million in box office in making it the 8th biggest domestic release of 1997.

This dragged me down the box-office rabbit hole....how the heck is SHREK 2 the 10th biggest movie of all time.

And can you believe that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is still in the Top 200 domestic box office??? #187 right there between Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Pitch Perfect 2. Wow!

Of the top 200 domestic grossers (not adjusted):
Only 16 were released before 1990.
Only 6 were released before 1980.
Only 2 were released before 1970. (GWTW and SW&t7D - both in the 30s)
Challenge: Without looking - name the 4 that were released between 1970 and 1980 - you already know one - the other 3 have one word titles (well, one has "The" in front of it) ---- GO!

BTW - the top adjusted grossers is not surprisingly a much more interesting list of movies.

Nitpicking here, but you said 1980 and that makes it 5, not 4 movies. The 5th movie? The Empire Strikes Back.

Nitpicking back I said "6 movies BEFORE 1980" and "BETWEEN 1970 and 1980", which in my view includes 1971 to 1979. My later post specifically said "Prior to January 1, 1980". But you are correct, if you include 1980, then Empire Strikes Back would be included in there.

This was my first opening night movie ever and with that I saw the very first showing at my theater. The atmosphere of seeing it with others was fantastic. The crowd was really into it.

I got chills when the opening credits started.

I don't have any current plans to see it again in the theater but I definitely would.

There really isn't anything like watching the first showing of a new Star Wars film in theaters with all the hardcore fans. All the excitement...the vibe....it's awesome. And when that theme starts and everyone cheers, it's the best.

Yes being 17 I've never really had a chance to see Star Wars in the theaters and neither of my parents are Star Wars fans.

I loved the atmosphere.

No Disney is the one estimating $215 million. Box Office Mojo's prediction was $231 million but they now think that's actually low.

$120 million for Friday - largest single day ever (beat Harry Potter at $91).

Depending on walk ups - $250-$260 million is in range. Biggest single weekend for theaters (combined all movies is $266 - during Jurassic Worlds record breaking weekend).

Might beat Jurassic World by tonight... Crazy bigger than even the wildest guesses.
