Definitely not, but they could have gone with another theme altogether like Star Wars, Marvel, Stitch or Emperor Zurg. Something that people at least like. Tron is more lame than the Lone Ranger and Treasure Planet combined.

But the whole point of the ride is riding the motorcycles like in Tron? As much as I love stitch, I don't see how they could make the ride on motorcycles related to him. :confused3

To be honest I would be thrilled they were putting something new in Tomorrowland no matter what it is, but maybe they think that if they brought over the Tron ride people would be more into? I know when I go to a park, I'm not deciding which rides to go on because of their theme, I go on the ones I find fun!

Google, it only got 33 million in the U.S. and Canada.

Box office[edit]
Leading up to the release, various commercial analysts predicted that Tron: Legacy would gross $40–$50 million during its opening weekend,[141] a figure that Los Angeles Times commentator Ben Fritz wrote would to be "solid but not spectacular".[142] Although the studio hoped to attract a broad audience, the film primarily appealed to men: "Women appear to be more hesitant about the science-fiction sequel", wrote Fritz.[142] Jay Fernandez of The Hollywood Reporter felt that the disproportionate audience would be problematic for the films long term box office prospects.[141] Writing for Box Office Mojo, Brandon Gray attributed pre-release hype to “unwarranted blockbuster expectations from fanboys”, given the original Tron was considered a box office failure when it was released, and the film's cult fandom "amounted to a niche".[143]

In North America, the film earned $43.6 million during the course of its opening weekend.[144] On its opening day, it grossed $17.6 million, including $3.6 million during midnight showings from 2,000 theaters, 29% of which were IMAX screenings,[145] and went on to claim the top spot for the weekend, ahead of Yogi Bear and How Do You Know.[144] Tron: Legacy grossed roughly $68 million during its first week,[146] and surpassed $100 million on its 12th day in release.[147]

In international markets, Tron: Legacy grossed $23 million on its opening weekend, averaging $6,000 per theater.[148] According to Disney, 65% of foreign grosses originated from five key markets; Japan, Australia, Brazil, United Kingdom, and Spain.[148] The film performed the best in Japan, where it took $4.7M from 350 theaters.[148] Australia ($3.4M), the United Kingdom ($3.2M), Brazil ($1.9M), and Spain ($1.9M).[148] By the following week,Tron: Legacy obtained $65.5 million from foreign markets,[149] bringing total grosses to $153.8 million.[149] At the end of its theatrical run, Tron: Legacy had grossed $400,062,763; $172,062,763 in North America, and $228,000,000 in other countries.[

It doesn't have to be a motorcycle, it could have easily been a spaceship, pod racer, or even Iron Man's suit.

Yep, I know. I must have been reading the search for the first one. It is still seen as a bomb by many people though. Which is probably why they got rid of the Tron name when it comes to Test Tracks retheming and rebranding.

I think a Tron Lightcycle ride would be a great addition to MK. It has nothing to do with if one likes the the movies, the concept is cool and if done right would be something that could appeals to many age groups.

Same with Avatar land in DAK. If it's done right, whether you liked the movie or not, the land has the potential to be awesome.

I don't understand why they are building Tron attractions. Both movies are horrible and the latter one tanked it at the box office with only 33 million in North America.

What's next a John Carter attraction?

Wow - you are WAAAYYY off. Tron Legacy made $172 Million in the US - so while not an out-and-out hit, it didn't tank. It was twelfth in domesitic box office for the year, finishing only $18 million behind "Tangled". It made $400 million worldwide off a $170 million budget. Which is why it was considered for a sequel that could still happen.

I will be the first to admit that it wasn't very good. (I thought the first hour was excellent before it turned into a boring slog.) Your information must be off of the original Tron, which made $33 million in 1982 which put it at 22nd for that year. I got this info off box office mojo if you don't believe me.

BTW John Carter, which made $73 million domestic (1/3 of Tron 2) off a $250 million budget
. Now THAT was a tank.

In the end I would argue the worst of your comment is to say because the movie didn't do well, they shouldn't build attractions around it. You must really love Pandora coming into Animal Kingdom, because THAT was the biggest movie of all time, and therefore they should build lots of attractions from it.

Really, I don't mean this personally, I know that I'm being snide, but I am one that always argues that the ride should be taken separate from it's IP. A great idea can be made into a dull attraction (Stich's Great Escape, Alladin's Magic Carpets) while a lousy IP can be made into a fantastic attraction (Splash Mountain). So my attitude is always to wait and see. It might just be the greatest ride ever created.

Just to add: Song of the South's lifetime domestic gross (with all the reissues) is roughly 40 million. Doesn't seem to have effected Splash Mountain any. ;)

That's because, not many people know what it is based on. Ask any non expert and they won't have a clue it's based on Song of the South.

This is China not the U.S. How many of us will actually make it there to ride it.

I'm just stating that it is based on a flop and the ride shouldn't be reproduced in America. Heck the 3rd movie was called off because it would have been an even bigger flop in the U.S..

I think there is a difference between people considering it a bomb (it wasn't....400 million global + 60 million in domestic DVD/BluRay, on a 170 million budget is, at worst, break even...and probably more like a modest success) and people considering it "not a very good movie".

People considering it a bomb are woefully misinformed (and that's not Disney's fault).

People considering it "not a very good movie"...well....I can see where they're coming from. It definitely had issues in the 2nd act that dragged it down and I can see why some folks don't like it all that much.

BUT, that being said...again...just because the movie wasn't a sure fire, one for the ages, smash hit doesn't mean it doesn't lend itself well to a fun, and recognizable, attraction. I think you'd have a hard time showing people a light cycle coaster, not having them recognize where it came from, and not thinking "That'd be REALLY cool to ride". Even if they weren't huge fans of either movie.

Again why does it matter so much it's in China not the U.S. I think it would still be a great ride in the U.S. But it isn't coming here as of right now.

I don't see the problem with the film not being a huge hit. It's visually beautiful and it makes a great theme for a ride. No one seems to like Avatar in the Disney fandom, yet many are excited to see what the place looks like with the bioluminescent forest, the floating mountains and such.

And yet..it IS based on Song of the South. Right? Not knowing the property it's based on doesn't make the attraction any less fun. Correct?

Again, Tron:Legacy wasn't a flop. The numbers show it.

The 3rd one was actually never green lit. It was in early preproduction. Given the 2nd movie's modest success (and the low ratings from the DisneyXD animated series) compared with the success of Disney's other live action offerings lately (witness Cinderella) and THEIR ability to outgross their budgets by a wider margin....Disney made a business decision. And they've left the door open, according to the potential director, for that to change.

Avatar is the highest grossing movie ever. People that aren't excited about it, will be once it opens.

The difference is that Song was buried and most of the world hasn't seen it (including me). Therefore most people don't know that it even exists. Who knows if it is a great movie or not. Disney refuses to let people see it because it's really racist.

Gotta point out that the DIS team and their ABD Backstage Magic group has been front and center for the 60th anniversary celebration - including entering the park before the masses and seats at the re-dedication ceremony. My guess is you'll hear all about it on an upcoming podcast.
