News Round Up

The actual "news" is so few and far between that its not really worthy of a constant update spot. I always think of this as "general discussion for the thoughtful"...as it tends to not involve Pom poms or the stuff that can be gleaned with a copy of birnbaums or 14 keystrokes into google
I use this as a spot to post the little news stories as it was originally intended. Things that won't attract much from their own dedicated thread. While big news stories deserves its own thread.

Well if there isn't any "news" you don't have to post and then the real "news" doesn't have to get
get lost from time to time
It's just frustrating to watch a tread for something and then get a ton of updates that have nothing to do with the title of the thread...

Again we tried before to stay on track but it just doesn't work. This is the spot for smaller news stories. There is no place for general discussion.

I know AK was well over budget and all but I am a big Joe Rohde fan he has done some great work. He in fact tweeted earlier today he's on his way to Orlando for work and of course he's staying at AKL.

He crippled the park...I don't think there were any two ways around...

Disney's priorities had changed...they were no longer rigid on what was gonna be built like EPCOT - where they mortgaged the farm.

You have to balance the art with the engineering and the construction and that wasnt balanced enough at AK...

Like they numerous 50 man treks to Nepal for Everest...
Here's an idea: instead of that...have a couple of engineers do some more concrete load testing and analyze the torque on the arms of the yeti a little closer...
Just in case ;)

I think the best way there is to not follow the thread and then check in occasionally...

I hate to think we're inconveniencing anybody by talking...this is mostly a hobby here, is it not?

I think that has to do a bit with the higher ups and the budget. As a designer I think Joe Rohde is great. He isn't a mechanical engineer.

After the thread was first created, my thought was to update the original post with each new news item. Just list the date of the update and a link to the news story or a link to the post that reported the news item. That way, those that just want the news without the commentary can just scan through Post #1.

Unfortunately, the OP isn't very active on the thread. It's mostly Rteetz with a few additions from myself and a few others.

Maybe for News Round-Up Thread 2.0?

I actually started to try to do that and it was just too much because it was long after the thread started. Maybe I will create a new thread later.

It's exactly what happened to the first "News Round Up" page and trust me when I made the same comment about how the thread by its own title is supposed to be a round up of the news and rumors it too had spiraled off into several pages of back and forth arguing between how people felt Disney was being managed. When I made my comment of this frustration I too got argued with.
Surprisingly enough almost 1 week after said comment a News Round Up 2.0 was made, so I knew not to make the "mistake" of subscribing as it would only be a matter of time before the curfuffle started. Sure enough if you go back you can see where the original poster of this thread even asked that the "discussion" be kept to a minimum as this was supposed to be a round up of the news.

Now before I get flamed like last time let me say I'm all for people discussing how they feel about certain issues...but maybe if you are going to spend 6+ pages arguing with each other about how Disney is managed , and how Frozen is ruining everything, and about attendance number fabrication maybe y'all should make your own thread with the title of News DISCUSSION so that those of use that are only looking for updates don't have to sift through ALL the discussion simply to find our rumors and news.

It's a good plan but good luck getting people to follow it. I still think the best option is a Table of Contents style first post.

I'd also like to remind people this is a discussion forum and I am open to suggestions on how to run the thread better.

I think it's fine as is, personally. If someone thinks a topic is worthy of extended debate they can make a new thread. This one is scattered about, just like a news cast. Some stuff gets a 30 second mention, others get more detailed stuff.
No need to subscribe to the thread, easy enough to go to your first unread post and carry on from there.

In theory a good idea, but in practice a difficult way of doing things. You basically want this to be a wire service. The problem is we'd have to repost everything in the other forum too. Things would get lost in the cracks. If you want straight up news without conversation wdwmagic is a good place to start. This thread is unique in that it collects and links to multiple sources.

Occasionally having conversations isn't a problem. I agree we need to be responsible about multiple post conversations. I had to take a step back and stop myself on 139 despite not wanting to. I think we can show appropriate discretion.

I agree every thread eventually goes off into a tangent on something else.
The problem is all these small news stories are part of a greater picture of the health of Disney Parks. They usually get off track because it hints at something or is a symptom of cost cutting, etc.

It's the price you pay.

Here is something to discuss. Disney has announced frozen summer fun live for a second year. They must really need to get people into that park.

Well...might work on us. Odds are we would have skipped DHS during our trip in August. However, with a 10-year old, Frozen-loving daughter...we may well have to rearrange some plans.

That's good news. It was really successful last year, and it seemed like lots of people loved it. Hopefully they go higher quality like DCA with some of the decorations. Now that they're moving to the American Idle theater it should get better.

The thread works how it is now. When a lengthy argument/discussion breaks out that I don't care about, it is pretty easy to tell who is involved and just skim over/skip their posts and look for posts with links, or the avatars of rteetz and others who contribute.

I enjoy the thread and the discussion. When I don't have time to read everything I just skim and look for the news. But lengthy discussion can make it hard to go back and find a specific post or news report for reference in planning trips, etc.

One possible solution, could someone create a second thread for news round up discussion? Report the news here on the news round up thread, Discuss the news on a sister thread, news round up discussion.

Just a thought, but I will follow either way.
