News Round Up 2020

I don't hate Spidey 3 like a lot of people do, but adding Venom was a mistake. The Sandman story was so well fleshed out with a nuanced and sympathetic story arc. Venom just horned in and screwed it all up. I know the studio insisted because Venom is a popular character but they should've just let Raimi do his thing.

I think they added Venom in because the studio didn’t want to go beyond the 3rd movie, and with how popular the villain is, I understand why they’d want to toss him in. 2007 was still a very questionable time for Marvel films. The F4 films didn’t do particularly well, especially Silver Surfer. Daredevil and Elektra were busts. X-3 was panned big time. Even the MCU wasn’t guaranteed to work after Iron Man and Incredible Hulk. So I understand Sony wanting to cut its losses. ASM 1 is like my Spider-Man 3, I actually really enjoyed that movie.

I’m hoping Venom and Morbius aren’t part of the Sinister Six. Any iteration of the S6 in the comics that involve them are terrible, Imo. Preferably I’d like to see Doc Ock, Electro, Vulture, Mysterio, Scorpion, Lizard/Kraven

Well, in that case they should have dropped the Sandman story and focused on Venom. Having the two stories hindered them both.

I think they were stuck with Sandman or another “side” villain in Spider-Man 3 because they needed to cap off the Harry storyline.

Amazing!

And a related thought just accurred to me - after hearing Iger talk about how he went out on a limb to make the Pixar acquisition, in the interview with Bloomberg (I posted a link earlier today), and just now seeing an add for an Apple original animated movie - imagine if Disney did not make that acquisition, not only would Disney have missed out on all the successful Pixar movies and the revitalization of Disney Animation (and all the associated IP they have exploited) but they would now most likely have a powerhouse competitor in Pixar/Apple with nearly unlimited financial backing from Apple. Fox is still TBD but all his other acquisitions were truly home runs especially when you consider all that additional competition that would be out there now.

Steve Jobs was shopping around a bit to sort of get rid of Pixar so I’m not sure they would’ve kept it anyways.

I mean, it's not surprising regarding Soul's Tomatometer score. Pixar rules the tomatoes!

100%: Soul, Toy Story 2, Toy Story
99% Finding Nemo
98% Inside Out, Toy Story 3, Up
97%: Toy Story 4, Coco, The Incredibles
96% Ratatouille, Monsters, Inc.
95% WALL-E
94%: Finding Dory
93% Incredibles 2
92%: A Bug's Life

That's just the one's in the 90s - what a track record! The amazing thing is that someone didn't like Coco or Up! The only others that are not Certified Fresh are Cars 3, which is 69%, and Cars 2, the only splat at 39%, though I think that's pretty ridiculously low. Even The Good Dinosaur is at 76% and that's probably my least favorite Pixar film.

I'm getting even more excited about this. It's so lovely for them to release this on Christmas Day.

Yeah, just thinking about normal Christmas / Holiday traditions and knowing we wont' be with family like normal, I think this will be a nice thing to do and maybe become something of a new Tradition, to watch a new movie on Christmas Day

Odds we get a date for Rat, and clear(er) plans for the 50th during the call?

Everything I have read said it will be heavy on the films and streaming and stuff so I wouldn't expect a ton of details on the parks. Dis see they will cover how they are handling the parks with the pandemic so maybe some guidance on when they think they can increase capacity or under what conditions, etc.

Might get one or two surprises but I wouldn't expect much park related details
