News Round Up 2020

Some reports were that it faired better than expected. I do think Disney did themselves a disservice by announcing when it would be included in Disney+ outside of premier access. If they waited to announce that after it debuted I think it would’ve got some more purchases. I held off because of that. I’ll just wait until December at this point.
Agree .. I held off for that (I was on the fence anyway and wasn't going to see it in theatres probably).

I think Disney made two mistakes:
1) Trying this VOD "Premier" access with a remake of arguably the weakest movie from the Disney Renaissance period. Remake's (at least for me) are "wait for rental" type of movies. Been there, done that, don't need to pay to see it again in a different form. It's not even a kid's movie (which would have probably help it sell better).

2) Announcing it would be free in 3 months. So weird. I am not sure why anyone would pay that much money to see a movie 3 months early (that had already been delayed 6 months) .. but i could say that for a lot of things. Different people value different things.

I think Mulan (the original) is a great movie. Not everything can be Lion King, Aladdin, or Beauty and the Beast. I'd also argue Tarzan was weaker for me. Many reviews have come back that this is one of the better remakes too.

Better Mulan OW rumor BO - it's a disaster, worse than Tenet financially for a same tent pole budget $200M movie...it's probably why Disney hasn't done anything with November movies yet...

"Mulan made a total of $35.5 million on its opening weekend from Disney+ subscribers.
Early numbers indicate that Mulan was watched by a total of 1.12 million households on its opening weekend."

Why do you think this estimate is more accurate than the $261M estimate @rteetz posted above? The 7Park Data numbers seem to have a little more meat behind them and the Disney CFO did say they were very happy with the results so I doubt very much that it's just $34M. As with most things, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

I did say "arguably" the weakest. :)
But for sure . .being the "weakest" of a great set of movies still means it was really good! :)

I'm sure Disney is happy with ANY income (in a short period of time) right now from a movie that has been collecting dust for months :).

It will be interesting to see if this VOD "Premier" access thing continues on . .and in what form.

I haven't paid to watch Mulan and I won't.

I was really looking forward to the movie in theaters. So what's holding me back? It's kind of a perfect storm.

1. the VOD release. I have actually been to a local theater that has been opened for a while and I feel very safe there. I would have preferred to watch it in a theater, even if it was a drive in. Which are also open here.

2. the extra charge on Disney+. I know there was a subsection of people who didn't want to pay, thinking that if they did pay extra it would open the door to Disney+ charging for all their new releases or newly released to Disney+.

3. the thank you credit to an authority that runs concentration camps in China. I know this has been debated on these boards, but all I can say is that it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not sure what to think, I know China is a huge market and Disney wants their money, but doesn't mean I have to like it.

At the end of the day I will most likely watch Mulan when it's freely available on Disney+. But definitely won't be paying for it.

I'm not sure how Disney could have even made as much money on Mulan as they were anticipating in early March. I think it's impossible to have even got close to that number they wanted. I don't think there was any good solution, but I still don't like what they chose.

I follow the movie industry and have for a few decades and am friends with insiders on a different movie board...none of them are giving the 7ParkData any credence...now, they aren't sure about the exactness of Screenrant, but they are almost certain Screenrant is in the OW ballpark and that the "less than $100M revenue" for the downloads total is also the "in the ballpark" number (for STRICTLY the downloads and not Disney playing with the numbers by adding annual and monthly membership buys at the same time, which many suspect they will do in November to make this look better than it was)...

It looks to be just a matter of giving the performers in the some of the cavalcades their days off. Everyone is there on Saturdays. There's one cavalcade not performing every other day of the week.

Which was the case with the other cavalcades already. So I really don't see the difference. Though I did notice the last 2 days that a good many more people gathered for them than they had been previously.

I won't be paying for Mulan for multiple reasons, but I don't think it is doing as bad as some are suggesting on VOD. I am still seeing a ton of advertisement for it on the internet. I don't think it is a blockbuster for them, but if it was really bombing they would have pulled the vast amount of the film's marketing budget at this point.

I'm just a casual BO watcher mainly because I have held DIS stock for more decades than I care to admit, so I'll defer to your insiders. But the Screenrant estimate appears to be based on one metric that just takes smart TV platforms into account. I would still expect something in the middle of the two around the $125-150 area. And as far as rolling annual subscription numbers into the BO, if they do that without disclosing it, they will certainly get called out.

That makes sense. And I don't think the Covid effect is being considered in the gloomy forecasts. Think about the family who usually goes to 2 or 3 summer blockbusters every year. They have gone to none this year and probably saved a few hundred dollars, so that $30 is a bargin to try and bring some normalcy to the house.

Aw man, I get back there on Nov 2, right after everything's gone!

When we were there at end of Aug, I was surprised to see no fall-themed desserts. But then I remembered since no Halloween party, no incentive to start doing the special treats until after Labor Day. I bet there won't be any Christmas themed desserts by time I go back. Such a bummer - I'm a sucker for the special treats!

Also, Mulan is the first remake to have a 12+ age rating right? We bought it for a group viewing (to split the cost), but quite surpsised at the age rating and wasn't aware it would not be a U or a PG rating. (Some parts were a bit more violent than we were expecting compared to the animated film)

I think what will tell how successful the model for Disney+ will be is whether they use it again.

I was thinking what they might try is a movie theater/VOD same day for a future release. Let it out in the theaters for those that want to see it, and let it out VOD for those that want to see it but not go to a theater.
