News Round Up 2020

I just read the survey and they missed a huge question...

Assuming guests are required to wear face coverings in Orlando in June when temperatures are a minimum of 92 degrees with a real feel of 108 due to 99.9% humidity, would you be willing to pay full price while risking heat stroke, dehydration, and exhaustion to attend our parks while they operate with limited capacity?

Remove masks and we are there. Make us wear masks in June, July, or August and it's a no go. I'll think about a mask in the fall/winter when we cross that bridge.

It being hot cant be a reason to risk others safety. Best option is to book a cooler month.

You can still book DVC rooms in June on the DVC website, but they've been super slow to update/cancel reservations.

This is where I am. I moved here less than a year ago so I could go to the parks daily. You can all see what great luck I am. I’d go back tomorrow if I could. But I’m also a CM, and I do not look forward to working in the heat and rain of a Florida summer with a mask 8-10 hours at a time. Nor do I really want to see a sea of people in masks on Main Street when I go back. It just seems like too much of a reminder of the outside world. I’d rather wait until it’s safe enough to go without mandatory masks. I’m sure CMs will be required at first no matter what, but I’d like to wait until at least as a guest I can go without one.

But why should they? Of course they can. But that doesn’t meant they can’t raise a question of validity on the restrictions.

If they can’t be open without masks then they probably shouldn’t be open. I’m not debating masks, but people can’t even go to the grocery store without others complaining about mask protocol. No way people are going to avoid touching their masks when they are dripping with sweat. it’s not about whether they work or not. A majority of guests will break mask protocol.

The mask decesion will be about 1 of 3 things, and likely a combo of them all:
1. Public perception
2. Legality
3. The law of the land

I am pretty sure Disney doesn’t want to require guests to wear masks, but are willing to do so to open early. I don’t think the law will require them to, but if state guidelines say to do it, then they will defer to point #1 of public perception.

Well that stinks for all the people that were just cancelled (for end of May) this week and never got a chance to reschedule their trip with this promotion. This doesn't feel right or fair.

Well this makes it sound like they are are going to be open in June but don't want more people booking trips in June via the promotion. Hopefully they just come out with a different reschedule promotion with different dates.

yeah, I am wondering if it might be more the later that they expect to cancel more trips in June and thus will put out a new promotion

It appears they are getting ready to cancel reservations through June. (No longer able to book a new reservation in June). Hopefully they are removing the recovery deal to update the dates or extend/enhance the offer. They are probably just eliminating it though since they don't know when they will be able to open and at what capacity. If you are only allowed to open at 25 - 50% or you only allow Florida residents/AP holders, how many incentives do you need?

I had to move an April trip to the end of June and took advantage of the "deal". It actually didn't save anything over the Spring bounce back offer I initially used, but I figured I would try the DDP since we have never done it before. It looks like the June trip will get cancelled now. I'll wait to see if there is another offer. If not, I'll skip this trip and just go for the October trip I booked already.

It's absolutely not fair, but none of what's going on right now seems fair. I don't think they are intentionally being jerky. I think, like all of us, they just don't know what's going to happen. I feel bad for people. I might be with them if they cancel our July trip. However, I think they will attempt to make it right for most people. They may not even be opening yet in June, and they don't want to have to cancel even more reservations. It's a coin toss at this point.

Agree.

It may be they don't want to be seen as offering free dining when dining is one of the things they have to probably cut capacity and service on for safety reasons.

I think at this point Disney should just offer some sort of bounce back offer for 2021. If they are going to be running at half capacity for a while, a lot of people won't come and those that do, they won't need an incentive to come.

There are a lot of non-fanatics that are willing to wait a long time for things to get back to "normal".

Heck for me .. the main reasons I wanted to book a June trip are pretty much gone anyway:
1) A "we are done with school " celebration. (they've been pretty much "off" school for months now
2) Use the Disney Skyliner .. (I mean .. will they even be running Disney transport right away?)
3) Ride Ratatouille -- which was rumored to open sometime this month, but obviously that won't be happening.

So .. even if they are open in June .. I'd rather just see what Disney offers me for a future "normal" trip.

For me (who has had a "regular" June trip booked since before all this mess) .. if they cancel my June trip I think I would be fine with any sort of compensation:
1) Come back in the fall or winter at your current rate.
2) Come back in the fall or winter with free dining (though, I doubt that promotion would save me any money).
3) Just give me a huge (like $50-100/night) Disney Gift card to use for a future stay. That way I may be able to upgrade "for free" to a higher tier resort or maybe i use it to buy annual passes for the whole family, etc.

Disney can be a lot more creative than just "free dining".

I wonder if this is because fewer restaurants will be open once wdw reopens.
This is a very interesting insight. Probably!
It appears they are getting ready to cancel reservations through June. (No longer able to book a new reservation in June).
They told TAs yesterday that they’d continue to cancel week to week. This week they cancelled May 25-31. Next week they’ll decide whether to cancel June 1-7. But they’re not going to mass cancel the month, at least according to them. The cancelation section of the COVID page of their website leaves the door open just the tiniest crack to a June reopening:

reservations are currently available for travel dates July 1 and later. As always, Guests are able to modify these bookings if Walt Disney World Resort opens before or after that time.
