News Round Up 2016

I'd like to believe that, but then again, we've talked about an Inside Out and a Good Dinosaur rides for Epcot and AK before. We'll see. It sounds like an obvious choice for a ride, but most times hopeful thinking doesn't take us anywhere.

Where are they putting this new ride at?

This is the kind of low rent stuff I've come to expect

I'm guessing some of the stuff could be found at a factory outlet store a few miles away. But I would be curious if for example a trendy new shirt at the Oakley store would be found anywhere for cheaper? You would think that there would be franchise rules for that, but I'm not a big enough shopper to know for sure.
You are correct. Until a name
brand goes on sale, the price is the same regardless of the store. Most items have preprinted prices on them which reinforces the consistency. One example is the Roxy/Quicksilver store in DTD at the DLR.

Is there an update for this list? TIA

Is that how retail works?;)

The point is the economic pull of outlet pricing just outside of Disney isn't going to be overcome that easily by the Disney bus system.

People not only like to shop - they like as much cheap stuff as they can get for their money.

Springs is trying to do upscale boutique...which are found in close proximity to all elite suburb areas in US metro areas...as opposed to outlets for the masses.

The question is...will it work? Is that the right market for their one of a kind clientele?

Putting in heavy amounts of new food is a good tactic...as long as they don't price it through the stratosphere. There are still a vast majority of the WDW customers that don't want to pay $75 per person per meal...

...no matter what Iger thinks In Cali as he climbs into his tanning bed this morning.

Is there an update for this list? TIA

Everything on the list has happened except for rivers of light...which is delayed indefinitely.

Toy story land and Star Wars land are in site prep phase - so it's hard to speculate when they will open. Toy story reportedly had a major internal budget conflict/cut...so that is not looking good. But typical.

Its not certain if its a new ride or an overlay to Three Caballeros or something completely different.

I said this quite a while ago...does that make me the next Jim Hill? Wait...I don't want that...nevermind.

It does seems like an obvious overlay to Three Caballeros if you're trying to cross-promote the movie in the parks. I think they'd be wise to have plans ready in the event it becomes a huge hit, then they can hit the ground running with a project.

Rumor

Latest Jim Hill Musings

An attraction within Mexico in Epcot using the upcoming Pixar film Coco could be coming in fall 2017. No word on what exactly that will be.

Star Wars Galactic Spectacular uses less pyro because of the proximity to AK and the fact that, that park is open late. Animals and fireworks don't go well together.

Seems kind of odd that some sort of new attraction would be on its way for a film that hasn't been released and hasn't proven it's weight at the box office. Maybe back in Walt's day that would fly, but not too likely now.

Inside Out made $356,461,711 domestic and $500,966,000 foreign for a total of $857,427,711 worldwide.

Throwing Inside Out in the Imagination pavilion or the Wonders of Life pavilion seemed like a no brainer...especially after making so much money. For now we are left with a 2 character meet and greet.

I would go into the case of Zootopia, but I can actually understand why that hasn't happened yet. We all know what's going on with the two parks it could potentially go in (Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom). That just seems to be unfortunate timing.

Not that anyone is asking to hear my thoughts on the subject, but I actually think a temporary (really temporary) overlay of an exisiting attraction should happen maybe a month or so before a new films release. Get the people thinking...geez, what's this new little thing going on over there. Generate some buzz for the new film.

And here's the kicker...when coming up with these little overlays, think ahead of a way to expand that films presence in the parks ahead of time.

But I'm just a simple man with simple ideas...and I guess there's a reason I'm not making millions of dollars over at Disney...

TL;DR

Have something small in the parks to generate buzz for a movie that hasn't been released yet with potential plans to expand if the film is a hit.

EDIT:

I know it looks like I just resaid what Maineiak said, but I swear I started my reply before he posted anything. That's the trouble with trying to do too many things at work :p

The key for that to be a good idea is the work has to be fairly quick. If they are going to shut down an attraction for a year every time a movie comes out, it really is more harm than good.

didn't they just add the new animatronics at the end of the Three Caballeros? Seems odd that they would invest into something that they were plan to get rid off/add an overlay too in the near(ish) future

Yes...this one is amateur...even for the king of amateurs.

Since when do they pay people to work on development of park additions with unproven IP?

...when hell freezes over in "Norway" next door

Yes, this is a wise idea but we're talking about Disney here.

I can see them scrapping the new animatronics. Remember they discarded all those trams at DHS without a moments hesitation?

Oh Disney, how you befuddle me....

I live in the Atlanta suburbs and many of these stores are not here, though they may be downtown at an upscale mall. But, we don't really ever go there.

Unlikely... an "attraction" can mean anything. I wouldn't jump to conclusions that this is a "ride" or an overlay to the existing "ride."

While the DS/Mall discussion has already been shuffled away, in the greater context of things it is worth noting that malls are dying. Dallas has long boasted "more shopping centers/malls per capita than any other U.S. city", however I'm not sure that holds true anymore with the massive exodus of retail from those large centers. The few malls we have left are primarily outlet styled centers now, with everything migrating to boutique style shops with high end condos up top.

My point being, back in the 90's, and even into the new millennium, malls were a hang out destination. Go with your friends, walk around, eat some cookie stuffed with frosting or a soft pretzels, and check out a few stores. That trend has been going extinct over the past decade. Our last few trips to see Santa felt more like we were visiting an abandoned mall. A quick youtube search of dead/abandoned/empty malls shows hundreds of links, and in nearly every case, these were thriving centers just 10 years ago.

All that said, Disney is insulated from the trend of mall decay in that they are busing folks in from some 25-odd resorts that are populated with folks from dozens of countries. In that space, the notion of shopping at a mall may seem old hat to many of us, but for my kids, it is likely going to seem much more of a unique experience.

I can't speak for all the cities you guys live in, but there are no malls left here in Dallas that:
A: are not outlet malls
B: have many offerings for kids, toys, funstuff, etc...

In today's dying Malls market, DS may be more unique than some of us realize.

Anyways, back to our regularly scheduled musings.

edit: it was pointed out to me that there is indeed one mall that is not an outlet mall and does have kid friendly stuff. However compared to the 15+ that have shut down, are shutting down, or are shells of their former selves, it is a far cry from the heydey of shopping malls in Dallas. Ultimately, my point is that there is simply not many malls left that are actually thriving, and I suspect not many of those can compete with DS when it comes to kid friendly entertainment and stores. So DS may be a lot more unique than we give it credit for, at least, for those of us who grew up in the "mall era".
