News Round Up 2016

I must be in a different universe, because my 'casual' is stopping at my apartment off of 192 after work to feed the cat and then zipping off to the parks for some snacks and fireworks. Twice weekly most of the time.

I guess I'm a little confused by Disney Springs - is it now primarily a shopping mall? It seems to me this is just a plain old clothing store. Do people come to Disney to do their regular clothes shopping? :confused3

I have always been confused by Downtown Disney/Disney Springs.

I read that Tokyo is very serious about increasing their numbers by 10% during the next few years while also improving capacity issues at the resort. Apparently their main issue with this delay is the lack of space around the parks.

Not long ago I read an interesting article about the possibility of Tokyo opening a third gate by purchasing land somewhere near the resort (like Universal is doing). I wonder if that'd be an option for the Oriental. I think they've been craving a third gate for quite a while.
I think they want a third gate too but they just don't quite have enough room for it. They are right on the edge of the ocean basically and major city areas are on the other side. They would likely have to pony up some big money to purchase more land.

Hey Teetz, you heard anything regarding Scat Cats and POFQ increasing size of their food court? Buddy of mine is staying there in Sept. and they were informed by Disney that there would be some inconveniences there.......

I wouldnt be surprised if they canned scat cats altogether...

Since bomafamilles was shuttered and they did the stupid name changes...port Orleans is a glorified value location.

I find that I'm too busy to do much shopping in my day to day life. Since I'm wearing work clothes or gym clothes 80% of the time shopping for casual clothes doesn't ever seem to be a priority. Our yearly 2 week vacation to Orlando is the one time of the year when I find time for this. Being from a medium sized city in western Canada we don't have alot of the stores/Brands that are available at DS.

As stated by PP above we will go there for the free entertainment, bowling, movie theater, and dining, but will without a doubt venture into all the new shops and most likely buy a few things. Partially because I don't shop all year long and partially because it's cool to have a shirt that you can't get here.

When you are staying onsite at WDW for 12-14 days you need some downtime from the parks. DS in one of the few places at WDW where you can go without a "plan". No FP+ to worry about, no rushing from one thing to the next. You can just simply go there, wander around and take it as it comes. My famliy is actually looking forward to spending a couple days there on our upcoming Dec trip. The new stuff looks very attractive to me, we don't have outlet malls like that here. It looks like a pleasant place to just walk around. Again keeping in mind we don't have malls styled like that where I'm from.

I have no interest in renting a car and leaving WDW to shop. I'll pay the premium prices in exchange for the convenience. We aren't concerned that some of the items may be available a few miles away for cheaper. My guess is Disney is hoping there are enough people like us coming there to pay the bills. I have no idea if there is, but time will tell.

well, some people just hang out at malls ... this is a very pretty mall with good places to eat, movie theater, bowling, lots of free music/entertainers ... I definitely get hanging out there

Not to mention that the new and improved Disney Springs is probably going to be quite popular with the locals. I,m sure that was part of Disneys plan for DS. Locals will always be there. Not as risky as who will come to DW on vacation.

I'm not a local, so I could be completely off base, but I would assume the products at Disney Springs are more expensive than what they normally would be. Why would someone pay 20% (arbitrary guess) more for a product at Disney Springs when they can get the same product from the same store at a different location?

Also, isn't the stores rent based on foot traffic? Higher foot traffic = higher rent = higher prices?

Again, I could totally be wrong, any local able to chime in?

Locals wherever you may find them love a good mall IMO. And you could be right about higher prices at DS as opposed to outside DS but a lot of retail chains have the same retail prices no matter where they are located. Did Disney try to give shopping offerings in Disney Springs that are not located within reasonable driving distance otherwise. I would hope so but am not sure on this.

I don't know if I agree with this. You can "simply go there, wander around and take it as it comes" at any of the parks too, but you won't necessarily accomplish much. DS is similar, in that to get a good restaurant table, see a hot movie, etc., you need to do some planning.

That being said, DS is free, but again...it's a mall.

I agree, if you live nearby.

If you're visiting Orlando, I don't get foregoing some the best theme parks in the world to hang out at a mall.

I haven't heard anything specifically. Check the POFQ thread on the resorts board if you can. I know the food court is being renovated.

I've never had an issue buying walk-up tickets for a movie at DS. We usually go once a trip. Maybe if it's opening night for Star Wars, but anything that's been out for a couple weeks won't be a problem.

We have made ADR's for DS days, but if we're at DS for an entire day there is really no planning involved with showing up for 1 dinner ADR. For those that aren't needing to eat at a specific place there are lots of options.

This is take it as it comes for Disney.

For people that are only there for a few days you might be right, but for people like us that go for 2 weeks you aren't going to spend every waking hour in the theme parks.

We use WDW as a vacation destination and enjoy all activities on property. We aren't the family that navigates through all 4 WDW parks, both UO parks, and Seaworld all in a 6 night stay. Thats not my idea of a vacation. :teeth:
