News Round Up 2016

Rumor

Star Tours has two IPs being considered for a redo of the current attraction. No word on what those are. The same IP would be used in both DL and DHS.

INTERESTING.
I'd certainly miss it, especially since it's so easy to upgrade and randomize the attraction.
That said, I wouldn't mind the mechanics being redeployed for another IP. Would it stand alone and break the new "lands" trend of DHS?
Either way, it would be a major overhaul of both the exterior and the interior. Only the actual ride vehicles and video system could be repurposed IMHO.

Yep. Another wait and see type thing. Previously it was only star tours at DL was being considered not its both so who knows really.

Interesting ... knowing where it is in DL it would have to have a "tomorrow" feel. Suppose a Guardians of the Galaxy could fit or even Tomorrowland the movie (though not sure there is $ in that). I suppose Ironman as well given the technology Stark creates (and maybe could leverage technology being used in Hong Kong Disneyland) - not sure if that could work in DHS though given the license and Universal, etc.

They can't do iron man in DHS.

Okay I may actually have some Disney related news that @rteetz hasn't posted... maybe.

Seems Marvel characters Cloak and Dagger are set to get their own live action series on Freeform (formerly ABC Family).

They probably qualify as C-listers so relatively unheard of but they do have superpowers so this would probably be Marvel's equivalent to a CW series like The Flash in tone and content. Plus Marvel owns the rights completely.

Netflix + ESPN Live sports would be a dream come true for us! We dropped cable back in 2008 and the only thing we miss is live sports. We do catch a lot on broadcast stations, but not as much as we would like. I would also like a bundle with Disney Junior, although we would pass on ABC, the new Freeform ridiculousness, and the regular Disney Channel.

Have you looked into SlingTV? It has ESPN as part of the bundle. I'm not sure how they work live sports though, there are probably blackout windows.

I'm sure I'm the only one who feels this way, but I really am not a fan of that castle.

!!!! I thought I was the only one underwhelmed by the Enchanted Storybook Castle! I keep looking at it, trying to catch an angle that appeals to me, but nothing yet. I can't even put my finger on exactly what bothers me about it. Too square? Too much definition between the tiers so it looks like a cake?

Not to go off topic but take a look at PlayStation Vue.

Cloud DVR with on demand. More channels than Sling (including all Disney and ESPN), allows multiple streams. So compared to SlingTV it's got DVR and more than 1 stream which is nice.

Still working on locals depending on where you are, but compared to Sling far and away more features for often the same or $5 more.

It looks like Disney is playing nice with the streamers. Good way to hedge bets I guess. PlayStation Vue works on PlayStation 3,4 and Firetv as well as iOS and android tablets and phones.

Over at BlogMickey they've got some great zoomed in shots of the Avatar mountains. The amount of detail going into these things is ridiculously wonderful. There's some pulled out shots too if you want a feeling for how the progress is going: http://blogmickey.com/2016/04/pandora-world-avatar-foliage-vines-painting/View attachment 161017

This scares me. Anytime I see this level of detail in Orlando I can't help but think maintenance cost and labor. This is beautiful today but what about 8-10 years from now? The cost to keep this painted and keep the fake plants vibrant and not dirty and faded is going to be a massive cost burden. I am concerned for long term health of the park.

A similar conversation has been had on this thread before, and I can promise it won't go anywhere. Interestingly enough, the previous conversation was about whether or not female characters deserve more time in princess movies (since the representation tends to skew male, despite female leads) even with the strong female demographic.

If women can't lead in traditionally male-centric areas (such as sci-fi), but they also can't lead in traditionally female-centric areas (such as princess films), where then can they lead?

I'm not sure I can even think of any examples of princess movies where the female is not the most heavily featured character. The closest example would be Tangled, but I still think Rapunzel gets more screen time than Flynn. The other would be Aladdin, but...he's the title character. It's his movie, not a princess movie. Anna probably gets more screen time that Elsa, but they are both princesses.

Nothing says pressure washing like a good hurricane... but seriously, if simulated dirt gets dirty, it looks like....... dirt. If simulated vines grow moss and mold..... well .....

No, but you have a point.
