News on Annual Passes

Price out 8 day tickets and see what the price difference is in renewing your pass. Our sorcerer renewal cost was $813 for no photo pass. I don’t know if they even sell 8 day tickets. Not knowing if I could ever buy an ap again will keep us renewing, but we go to Disney every 6-8 weeks as a weekend getaway so they are definitely worth it for us. The discounts you can get on rooms, restaurants etc being a passholder might also help tip the scales in favor of renewing.

WDW stopped selling annual passes on November 21, 2021. WDW APs can be renewed up to 30 days after they expire. So, shortly after December 22, 2022, Disney will know approximately how many did not renew. They need a little time for number crunching and to finalize changes and new policy decisions.

Also in mid-January, the court’s next big decision is expected on the issue of class action certification.

So, I am watching that period from end of December through January.

This is not true. Since they aren't active the day you buy but the day you first go. So there are many out there that bought and haven't gone yet to activate or activated any of the other days since the last sales.

I am not an "insider." The following post may contain speculation, opinions or conclusions.

Only Disney knows whether or not there are "many" that were not activated. Yes, it can and does happen. Just throwing your opinion "out there" that there are "many" is probably pure speculation.

It doesn't matter either. Disney does not deal in specific, exact numbers like that. Just like selling Pixie Dust passes is inconsequential in the great scheme of passholder attendance in the mix. Disney decided as a policy that Pixie passholders may be helpful to add to the parks on non-holiday weekdays. Disney does not need to calculate policy from exact numbers. They have the 30,000 foot view. They only need to decide how many they are going to put back in the market and when, if ever.

After research and carefully reading and paying attention to the trustworthiness of statements from Disney and others (exact language, context, the event where the statement was made etc.), I have just stated that time period is a period to watch. I don't know if APs will be for sale then. Like everyone else, I will find out when the news explodes on the web.

You did the same thing stating that come dec 22 they will know how many decided to renew which is not black and white statement at all. There are renewals going on every single day.

I think this is a good theory, if it’s January it’s also after the busy holiday period. For many years they always offered special Florida resident deals on tickets after the holidays. I remember a play 4 days ticket for $99 back in the day. The covid revenge travel period is winding down and DVC points are back to full borrowing so there’s not the backlog there either.

I used to buy those 4-day tickets all the time when I lived there. I also got another discount if I purchased them through my husband’s work. Those were the days!

My DH’s pass was purchased the same time as ours but he didn’t activate until December. I'm sure he’s not the only one. Only difference is I know he will be renewing when his window opens on October 21st. I wonder how many more will also renew at day 60 vs 30 after?

That really is not that important to Disney. They capped the number of APs distributed. Do not think of it as this pass is being renewed early and that one not until 30 days after expiration. Think of it as they issued 500,000 and expect a 70% renewal rate. If the numbers are tracking along those lines, they might authorize 30% of 500,000 — in other words 150,000 APs for new sales. They might reduce that by 5% to adjust for anomalies.

For what it’s worth I just renewed my APs for our family and it does give the option to reassign the pass to someone else in the MDE app because technically even though it’s a renewal is still an unused ticket until we tap in and use it. I did call and try to get a pass for my son’s girlfriend. We are Florida residents so her only option would be to get a pixie pass for a year and then when it comes time for renewal she could then upgrade to one of the other less blockout date passes. We haven’t decided if we are going to do this for her yet as it’s basically worthless for her in the summer as any of the dates she could go is when it’s blacked out since they are still in school.
Curious, can you upgrade a pass during it's "use year" by paying more?

In the past, when passes were actively being sold, you could upgrade them, but the upgrade was not prorated; you paid the full difference, even if you were late in your "pass year".

That’s what it looks like is able to happen in MDE as it shows up as an option in my account. I won’t test it because we all still need our APs renewed.

My son's pass expires in November and I just renewed it - I clicked reassign pass to see if I could assign it to his older brother (apples to apples for us), it errors out every time so although it looks like it's an option I don't think it can actually even be done.

You are right I tried to re-assign my daughter’s to my son’s girlfriend and it wouldn’t do it.

I renewed mine and DH’s yesterday which was day 60. I almpost got burned last year when they were selling them briefly last year. I called the day they reopened sales and the CM I spoke with tried to tell me I’d be better off waiting until my December trip to purchase at guest relations. I was worried about park reservations so I insisted she transfer me to the queue which she thankfully did. We all know what happened In November! Soooooo FWIW I don’t even trust the renewal process whew why I did it ASAP.

That makes sense. Assigning a renewal to someone who doesn't have an annual pass would just be a way for the someone to get a discount on a new pass and that is not Disney's intent.

Can I not pay for photopass when I renw, but add it on later if I decide I want it?
