Newport RI

We went last April for something like 24 hours. Make sure you do the scenic drive to see all the mansions. I would also recommend if the weather is nice to some of the walk along the ocean. There are a ton of good places to eat, so you might want to do some research before you head out. We ate at, I believe it was called the Red Parrot, which was very tasty. It had many choices including a ton funky drink choices and was very casual. I heard that the Black Pearl is good also. There is a ton of shopping to do from namebrand to boutiquey stuff. Hope you have a great time!!!! :)

If you are planning on touring any of the mansions, try to include The Astors on your list of ones to see. Its not part of the group of mansion tours, but is such a standout. I just love it! Others I enjoy are Rosewood, The Breakers, and The Elms.

I love Newport. If its a nice day, make sure to walk along Cliff Walk.

Enjoy and let us know what you end up doing!

Are you going just for the day? If so, a mansion, the Cliff Walk, and a nice seafood lunch will be a great day. Don't try to do too much! For lunch, I suggest the Black Pearl ($$), the Brick Alley Pub ($), ot the Moorings ($$ and nice view).

We visit every October, so I may be able answer more questions if you have any.

One of my fav places was The Breakers mansion on the cliff walk. The cliff walk alone is breathtaking. Have fun!

Is this a good time of year to go?

Where is the best place to park?
Where do the mansion tours leave from?

I think anytime is a good time to visit newport. high time is probably summer, but its supposed to be a nice weekend, a little cool but in the low 50s which isn't too bad.

Getting to the mansions is easy...each has its own parking lot so you just drive right up. I think all of them are on Bellevue Ave. You can decide what you want to see ahead of time if you want, just check out their website . The Astors is a stand alone (I linked it above)...you buy a ticket for that one alone. The others are grouped together.

My favorite place is the Inn at Castle Hill.

I love Newport!! My MIL lives there, she's actually flying in to visit us as we speak. But, I get to spend three weeks there this summer!!

It will be chilly!
I don't think you'll have a problem getting parking this time of year. There are pay lots downtown. Mansions have their own lots, just pull in.
Come Memorial day, it's a whole different story.

If you like seafood and nothing fancy eat at Flo's across from the beach.

I spent an afternoon in Newport last October, and wished I had more time! I was there on a tour as part of a seminar. We had lunch at a place next to the Tennis Hall of Fame, then we went on a tour of the Breakers, which we thought was amazing!

I thought mid-October was a bit cold, but I'm from Hawaii, so my tolerance for the cold is probably much lower than most others! But it is especially cold since it's right on the ocean.

I don't really have much more to offer, except that if I could go again, I would probably spend more time there to explore some of the shops, restaurants, and mansions. It's really a nice place!

Just an FYI....this Saturday (3/11) is the annual St. Patrick's day parade.....it draws a huge crowd so the bars and restaurants will be jam packed. If you can pick another day, I would highly recommend it :)

I I went to that once. It was a lot of fun. So, maybe if they don't mind crowds, they may enjoy the parade.

Yep, the St. Paddy's day parade is Sat.....huge crowds! But, like someone else said, they may like that! I also recommend the Brick Alley Pub or The Mooring Restaurant.....both great choices! I love Newport, I wish I could live there all year long!

Very true, it is a lot of fun...we'll be there :thumbsup2 I guess I was just advising against it not knowing if this was the OPs first visit to Newport etc. If that's the case, it might be better to explore on another day....not sure I'd want to visit a place for the first time knowing that such a huge crowd drawing event was taking place....

I agree on the recommendation! DH and I got married at the Astors Beechwood!

And my high school prom was at Rosewood LOL!

(Can you tell I am originally from the Newport area???)

Ummmm, Flo's!!! The Red Parrot has great food as well! This Staurday is the St. Particks Day parade and it's supposed to be really nice out so I am sure it will be packed!!!
