Newfoundland Dogs..

We have a Newfie. She's our second. Our first passed away at 10.

Everyone is right. They are lots of work, drool and have an odor to them. However, we find if you brush her often...the odor isn't as bad. She is great with my kids, all the other dogs and humans. She isn't so good with cats but that's her personality. My first Newfie was great with cats. She does not like to see my kids swim, she wants to rescue them. We have a huge yard, huge house and she actually has her own room. They are people dogs and want to be with their family. They cannot stand the heat, of any kind.

Do your research and if you find this is the right dog for you (not just because they are "cute"), find a good breeder. You'll have to pay some bucks for a good dog. Our first was $800 and our second was $650 (they gave us a break because it was Christmas).

Good luck!

We were looking on the interenet for some good dog breeders and we found a few. The prices are hefty so is keeping them fed and clean. We are not just interested in the dog for the cute effect but for their amazing personality towards children. I wish that we had a bigger place that dogs can go in and play in the water because they love it. I heard a story that a lady gave her kids a bath and didn't drain the water and she finds he dog in the tub. I though that ws a funny story.

Ours is quite a swimmer (obviously...:) ), and does not want us in the water without him. Good thing we live on a river......

He's actually really good around kids in the water. He seemed to already know that he shouldn't get too close to not hit them with his paws.

I haven't read all the threads, so I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but they can be wicked smart, which of course means "too smart for their own good". At least the one I heard of was!

A friend of my mother had a newfie. Like all newfie's, this one looooved water. To the point that one day, when he was home alone, he figured out how to TURN ON THE BATH TUB FAUCET so he could get wet. Soaking wet. Then he took his soaking wet self and ran all over the house, leaving tons of wet dog fur everywhere. The owner did the only thing she could, laugh hystericaly, clean up the mess, and hire a plumber to install "dog proof" handles on the bath tub!

Lol!
That is so funny! In a bad way of course my mom would have a heartattack if that happened to us. Could a lot of snow be good for a Newfie? We live in Colorado so we get a lot of it. Speaking of which today is another SNOW DAY! Yay!

On a side note.... (and hoping not to stir many pots) good breeders are usually not on the internet. They will have waiting lists for their pups and will ask many questions about the homes they are going to.

Now the internet is a safe place to look for Newfie breed clubs in your area. I would look to the breed clubs for good sources of referrals for someone nearby. Having your breeder in town or in-state is a good thing when an occasional problem or concern could show up. A good breeder will also want to stay in contact to see how your pup is doing.

Yes of course. We prefer to get the AKC registered pets. OS we only go to the houses that have that. We also keep and eye out in the newspapers. We have been on the forums on which have good info and they have the clubs on there to.

I researched them when I first got my golden retrievers. The fact that they drool a lot was enough to put me on another path. I've had goldens for a long time now. Since dogs are pack animals sometimes the introduction of another puppy makes the dogs bond to each other rather than their owners.

We have had 3 goldens, and a Saint Bernard. The Golden's are so great but I have been in love with the "slobbery" dogs forever. I don't know how my golden would act though with a new dog. For some reason she is very attached to me and I think that it was becuase I didn't show her that I dominated and that I was her "master". I am more of her playmate. She follows me everywhere. I can hardly take a shower without her beating down the door to hop in to. I think that having a new dog might make her aggresive.

others have given you a good general decription of Newfs. However, I'm a little concerned about how you're going about obtaining a dog. AKC papers don't mean a whole lot when it comes to selecting a breeder. AKC registration is permitted when the pups come from 2 AKC registered parents. Puppy mill puppies come with AKC registration. It's only the first of MANY things you need to consider.
Please keep in mind that a GOOD breeder - one who's done health clearances and genuinely cares about improving the breed - does NOT advertise puppies in a newspaper. A GOOD breeder has his(her) pups spoken for at least before the pups are whelped and hopefully before the breeding ever takes place. People who advertise pups in the classifieds, on the internet, etc., or who sell pups in the Walmart parking lot or a pet store, are NOT good breeders.
Your best bet is to contact a breed organization, select a breeder and get on a waiting list for a quality pet. The breeder should ask YOU as many questions as you ask him. If you don't want to wait, you're better off dealing with breed rescue or a shelter. Please don't consider supporting a backyard breeder or puppy mill!

I would never!
Out of all of the dogs that I have owned they have all been pure breed and well taken care of before we even arrived. I am not the one who does all of the research my family does. I was only asking for whether or not they were good pets. Not a critic's evaluation.

As everyone else says, big dogs are lots of work. As long as you are prepared for that you will be ok. Just a thought, if you like giant breeds have you considered a Great Dane?

They are just not as appealing for me. I have though about them but the are not as cute as the Newfies. They also scare my mom.

Does this look uncute or scary?

Stop right there!
Not a good attitude to start with. Your golden will do what you expect. If you don't have the right expectation for the Golden you are asking for trouble.
Also you are not the "alpha" of the Golden? That is a problem in itself.
A dog should never be higher than the human.

I suggest you work this little kink out before you go for the Newfie. Take your Golden to obedience classes and do daily heeling and walking.
Prepare yourself and your Golden for another dog.:thumbsup2
Also make sure that you pick out the Newfie that gets along with your Golden over the Newfie that you like...very important to make a match.

my next dog is going to be a Great Dane! Tell me, what kind of odor do they have? Normal doggy odor or worse? Newfie have a odor for sure....because of their hair. Shedding? Normal?

I am not sure why my brother thinks that they are scary. As for myself I do not personally like that breed of dog. I don't know why.
As for being the Alpha my dad has that down pat but I think that she should also listen to me because she is around me 24/7.

What do you mean your dad? :confused3

No real odor from Brutus other than gas. He does shed some, but he has such short hair it isn't a problem. We had a German Shepard before, and his shedding was terrible.
