We have a Newfie. She's our second. Our first passed away at 10.
Everyone is right. They are lots of work, drool and have an odor to them. However, we find if you brush her often...the odor isn't as bad. She is great with my kids, all the other dogs and humans. She isn't so good with cats but that's her personality. My first Newfie was great with cats. She does not like to see my kids swim, she wants to rescue them. We have a huge yard, huge house and she actually has her own room. They are people dogs and want to be with their family. They cannot stand the heat, of any kind.
Do your research and if you find this is the right dog for you (not just because they are "cute"), find a good breeder. You'll have to pay some bucks for a good dog. Our first was $800 and our second was $650 (they gave us a break because it was Christmas).
Good luck!
