Newest "Moms to Be" Thread

Hey ladies. Morning sickness affects more than half of all pregnant women, but not all. DON'T WORRY if you don't have any! It doesn't mean that your pregnancy isn't viable!:thumbsup2

Just be glad that you aren't sick 24/7 (because "Morning" sickness was the stupidest name they could have come up with) for the first 3 to 4 months of your pregnancy. Consider yourself one of the lucky ones!:goodvibes

There are a lot of new first-timers on this board. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Many of us have multiple children and have been through everything you are going through. We have had the same questions and worries that you have and we'll be more than happy to help you!!!:goodvibes

Not all pregnant woman get morning sickness..
Like me. I haven't had any. (And am beginning to wonder if I should be alarmed by that, you guys saying it's a GOOD sign! :scared1: )

Don't worry. I didn't have morning sickness like most pregnant women do, and all is well with me so far. I felt queasy from time to time, usually when I ate too much or too fast or if I had an empty stomach. Every woman's different, every pregnancy a woman has is different.

What are your thoughts on prenatal testing?

Remember, every one is entitled to their opinion. There is no right or wrong answer!:thumbsup2

Prenatal testing? We didn't do anything significant. I'm in my early 30s as is DH, so I don't have a high level of risk for any abnormalities. DH has clubfeet, so we had a level II ultrasound done to check the baby's feet (they're fine), but that was mostly to let us know if we'd have to prepare for reconstructive foot surgeries. I turned down the blood tests and things like an amnio. If they'd found something "odd" on an ultrasound, we very likely would have explored it further.

We chose to have prenatal testing done (Amnio) because if there was anything wrong, we wanted to know. I cannot say what we would have done, if anything but be prepared, but we wanted to know.

Also, I needed alot of tests done due to my thyroid problems and advanced meternal age (I know...that term again!). The meds I am on pass through the placenta which means the baby can be born with a thyroid problem as well. The big concern is goiters. If the baby gets a goiter, I may not be able to give birth ******lly (due to the baby not being able to put his neck to chest to come out) so I must go for many ultrasounds (every 4 weeks now). Also, birth weigh can be affected so I am under a careful eye.

Unless they see something concerning on the ultrasound we don't plan to have any prenatal testing done. It doesn't change anything, but would make us worry (unnecessarily in the case of false positives).

Does your doctor test you for progesterone levels? My doctor put me on supplements because she said I was borderline. They like to see it at 20 in early pregnancy, and I was at 18. I'm not sure how concerned I should be.

We get our first ultrasound next Wednesday to date the pregnancy. I'm really excited (and nervous)!

I don't know a whole lot about it... but from what I've read in books I would DEFINITELY do it if they saw something on the ultrasound.

DH and I are just starting off. We just bought our first house, we're both still trying to finish up degrees (I switched majors when I was 3/4 of the way done with the degree :rolleyes1)... so money is hit and miss with us...

We can afford this, yes. But we would definitely have to rethink things like whether or not I am going to keep working, how much money to put into the house before we move in vs. just living with it for now, etc..

If there were a problem we would want to know NOW because of the money and being prepared mentally, too. We have substantial savings (About a 1 1/2 year Emergency Fund).. but I'm sure a hospital bill would take it and laugh. :scared1:

...I'm off to hear a HEARTBEAT!!!!

This is what I was told...they test the progesterone levels in the beginning...they need to go up with each blood test. I think I was at 17.5 and they were OK with that.

It is great that they gave you the supplement so I would not worry...I was also told that they do not check this # after the first trimester.

I hope this helps!

HEARTBEAT!

Oh. My. Goodness. :lovestruc

182.

...any idea what that means? :confused3
I don't want to know the sex but hey, if the information is out there based on hearbeat a little hypothesis can't hurt, right?... :rolleyes1

Supposedly a heartbeat that's faster is a girl, slower it's a boy. I don't think it's true.

Pretty fun to hear it, though, isn't it? :)

Oh well.

I don't want to know anyway... probably better I dont get an idea in my head! lol.

It is GREAT to hear it.

She warned us she might not be able to find it this early... put the doppler down and there it was. She smiled and went "Guess that was an unnecessary warning!"

It truly is a beautiful sound. Almost as beautiful as the first time you hear your baby cry and my personal favorite...the first time your little one says "I love you Mommy". Still brings tears to my eyes every time he says it.

I guess I'm feeling ready to jump in over here! I was on the TTC thread, but I am now just over 6 weeks pregnant with our first, due July 9.

I had an ectopic pregnancy in July, so I've already had a lot of monitoring this time. I had 3 sets of bloodwork done, and I just had my first ultrasound and doctor's appointment on Wednesday, which showed that the pregnancy is in the right place this time, and we saw the faint beginnings of a flickering heartbeat. I go back again next Wednesday for another ultrasound so they can actually measure the heartbeat (it was too faint to get a measurement the first time).

We haven't told anyone at all yet, except online. We might tell our parents next weekend, if everything goes well at the second ultrasound. I'll be 12 weeks on Christmas Eve, so we'll probably tell the rest of our families at Christmas.

This one is fun. Piecey made me think of it with the heartrate discussion.

What is the strangest old wive's tale you've heard about pregnancy?

I don't know if it's the strangest, but it's definitely weird. The speed at which your leg hair grows is supposed to tell you if it's a boy or girl. I don't know which is which....:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

We havent had any done..I am not at risk for anything.. If they had found something on one of my ultrasounds, I would have been all over it though. My Dr. kinda pushed me for it, just in case. So far, so good though.

:lmao: :lmao: Ummmm.... I dont know. If you have a lot of heartburn, you will have a baby with a lot of hair.

My grandmother is a firm believer that if you lift your arms over your head, you'll wrap the cord around the baby's neck. She even had the nerve to tell a family member that after her son was born with extreme disabilities due to the cord (he spent his short life in a wheelchair). Of course, she always told us that if we turned a flip or hung upside down our liver would turn over!

And please don't listen to anybody who says they can predict your baby's sex by any means other than asking a dr after an amnio or ultrasound!

I've heard that one. Total BS. A friend who's due next month told me her MIL gives her grief about that one. I responded by putting my arms over my head. I'm so defiant.

The weirdest one I heard is that if your nose widens, you're having a girl. :confused3
