"Newest" Moms Hangout... take 2!

We had three of the big tubs from Sams and one of the regular tubs. All were recalled. I went to the grocery store and all of the kind that we use that they had on the shelf was recalled, so I got a few jugs of the liquid and will figure something out tomorrow.

I seem to recall reading that the liquid (ready to feed) formulas were not affected by the recall. As long as you can find the RTF, you should be OK. I'm sure that there will be a run on them as folks find out that they have recalled formula. :upsidedow

The liquid wasnt recalled so that is an idea. Someone said on the budget board not too long ago that certain store brands are the same as the Similac Sensitive they compared ingredients. It is making it hard on us moms. Maybe you could do the liquid until you could get in touch with the Dr to change. I dont know what we will do if we have to change brands because Anna can't take Enfimial.

Ironically I had a bad experience with the ready to feed about 2 months ago. I bought 2 containers thinking how great and convenient it would be to not have to mix it even though they do cost a bit more. the first container, great. the second container, not so great. I opened it up and it was like it was all curdled. I thought maybe I hadn't shaken it enough so I closed it up and shook it like mad. Nope, still all disgusting and clumpy. I called the number on the back and they had me send back the container for testing. They sent me a coupon and reimbursed me for the price of the container but yuck!!! I haven't tried it since. That should have warned me! Darn Similac! I had an unopened can of Enfamil from WIC that I just tried this morning for Carys but she wanted nothing to do with it. She took about 3 oz and then pushed it away. I gave her her oatmeal and bananas and got another 2 oz. down her but goodness, you would have thought that I was trying to feed her toxic waste! :lmao: I think I will have to try that Target brand. I'm sure that the doctor's office will be flooded with calls but I'm going to leave them a message today.

None of the tubs we have from Sams were recalled, nor any of our smaller containers.

I'm going to recheck because someone told me today they were informed by Similac that their system was wrong and some of the lot numbers weren't displaying correct information about whether or not it was recalled. :headache:

The only thing that came up recalled for me was the sample cans from the pediatrician.

(Owen is on the Similac Sensitive- Isomil Soy)

*eta*
I just rechecked and sure enough, the Sams Club cans that said not recalled last night are now saying recalled. What is up with that? Ugh.

I just returned my tubs to BJ's and they gave me a gift card. The lady at the return counter was really snarky and said "good luck finding something for her to eat now" (Carys was in the cart) kind of annoying. I went to Target and got the generic and just gave her a bottle of that and she is down for a nap. She seemed to take it well. Fingers crossed.

My doctors office said that it was a voluntary recall because in some countries they eat beetles and since it isn't something like metal they can't tell us what to do. um.... :confused3 I told them how it said on the similac website that my containers were contaminated and they didn't really say anything about that. yet another reason why I think that my doctors office is a little stupid. I just asked if it was ok to switch formulas and they said yes and just to watch for changes in her stool.

Hmmm. I filled out the information on the Similac website to be sent a shipping label to send it back to them. I read one article that said not to return it to the store, another said to return it to the store. Confusing!

I don't know if the information I filled out went through, though. I might call Sams and see if they will take the tubs back.

RE: Similac...we don't use it, but I agree with whomever said to get the store brand of the formula. Elliott is on the Parent's Choice from Walmart that is like Enfamil, and has no issues going back and forth between the Parent's Choice and Enfamil (my SIL's friend works for a pediatrican, and gave us a ton of the Enfamil sticks that we keep in the diaper bag).

Sooooo....we are moved into our new house!! It was a totally stressful last week! The closings of the old house and the new house kept getting moved, because the appraisal of the old house took forever to be done. But, it is all over now, and we are slowly getting settled in the new house! And moving into a ranch couldn't come soon enough, since Sunday morning Elliott started pulling himself up with one of those push walkers, and started walking with it!!

I think that the official procedure is to return them directly to Similac, but many (most?, all?) stores are going to accept them back super easy and then return them to the manufacturer with their recalled inventory.

We are going to definitely try to return ours to the stores as that will be a simple, immediate process rather than to wait for Similac to do whatever they are going to do.

Ugh.. My babies are SICK! I have seen more snot today then I ever thought possible. GAG.

DH returned ours to the store with no problems gave him a gift card but we will use it. They even went with him to the baby aisle and made sure he got an can that was not included in the recall.
I still wanna get the Target brand later tho. These will have to get us through until then.

Lucas couldn't tolerate anything but Similac's Isomil Soy. We tried, and within 2 bottles he had blood in his diaper again so we are being overcautious and just sticking to what we know works.

Taking both boys to Sams to return the cans wouldn't be a simple and immediate process for me, though. :rotfl: Especially because Sams would be unable to replace the formula with one that was not recalled, I am okay waiting for Similac to mail me a check.
I have 4 tubs from Kroger that were not part of the recall, so we are good for awhile.
I buy from both because Sams doesn't take coupons... who knew it would be a good thing? :upsidedow

That is awesome and some good customer service!

I had someone texting me from the baby aisle in her WalMart last night to check lot numbers because they were out. They were all recalled. :(

We've looked around and been unable to find any that were not recalled. We've gone to the premixed temporarily, but have had some trouble finding that on the shelves as lots of other people are probably taking that pricey option, also.

If you belong to a wholesale club (BJ's, Sam's, etc) you might look there. I know my BJ's always has the RTF qt bottles by the case.

Thanks, I'll try our local Sam's and Costco. Sam's is where I typically bought the powder, but never looked for RTF because we weren't in the market for that.

Similac released the lot numbers of the recalled formula. This list is VERY long.

I'm not sure which Sensitive you're using (orange, magenta or green :lmao:) but I found this pdf helpful:

http://abbott.vo.llnwd.net/o18/similac/sms/pdf/SimilacProductSubstitution.pdf

So, not all powder has been recalled it just seems the plastic containers and the small cans of Similac Advance.

I'm headed to Kroger to get a few more small cans of the soy powder. I HATE the liquid because we do bottles at room temperature and once you open it, it has to be refrigerated and I can never bring it back down to room temp quickly enough. So far I've managed to avoid it by using the smaller cans which is still pricey but I still have $2 coupons so that is helping.

We use Advance, so the only powder option is the singles. These are just about the same price per ounce as the quart bottles, but many stores don't carry them or have them currently in stock.

Bummer, sorry. I thought, for some reason, you were using a Sensitive formula. Most have been someone else.

So sorry you guys are going through all of this!

Another big brand recall sending people to buy store brands. I really hope the store brand stuff goes through the same testing. (Not that testing helps, since this recall was brought on from customer complaints and not due to any outside monitoring from what I see.)

I saw a Doctor on the news this morning talking about how small the threat of any harm is. But really? Who cares? As long as there is any threat. Ugh. He just had this attitude like, 'It's just bugs, get over it and stop bothering my office." Jerk.

Our pediatrician wasn't worried either. I had to take Owen for a sick call yesterday and while he wasn't rude, he wasn't concerned. Apparently only like .02% of containers were actually contaminated AND it's a beetle that other countries eat so there will be no physical harm to baby. The concern is that it could upset their tummies and they'll refuse to eat (exactly like Lucas refusing to eat in the hospital because he had the lactose sensitivity)...

Owen has eaten 2 Sams Club tubs of the recalled Soy and I'm not concerned.

He was more concerned with Owen's lack of weight gain. :headache: Apparently an 11lb 6oz 4 week old is not acceptable :rotfl: (7oz weight gain in 4 weeks is apparently not sufficient)
