I just purchased my DVC membership last year. Haven't been able to use it until September of this year. However, I have 100 points that will expire as of May 31st of 2013. Can any veterans out there please lay out my options for me ?

Thank you in advance, I really have no clue how this all works as of yet! :)

You can 'bank' your points from this last year now and then when you are making your reservations for your September trip, DVC can use those points first and then also add your current use years points to it as well.

Just call DVC or go online to DVCMEMBER.COM and login.
Go to the 'My Membership' option at the top.
Then it will allow you to bank your current points before they expire.

You can also call DVC directly and they can assist you with it as well.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, but you have to bank 4 months prior to your use year.

You might be able to call Member Services and explain that you are confused and see if you can get the one time allowance of banking late.

However there is no guarantee they will do that.

The only other option would be try to rent those points out. However since they must be used by the end of May they are going to be limited in demand.

Thanks for the tips so far. Unfortunately they were points that were banked from last year so they actually expire as of May so I'm afraid it seems I may just have to let them go to waste I seems. I have been trying to Rae's different threads to get how this whole thing work so forgive me if I ask something that has already been answered.

Yes if they were banked points, then your only options are use them or rent them. You might consider David's Rental Service and see if he can help.

I would contact David's rental ASAP and see if you can get those points rented! You may only get 6.00 a point but that is 600.00 vs. 0.00! He is very reputable.

Have you checked out the options that may be available to you via the World Passport Collection? (exchanges via RCI) There are both weekly and nightly options. Perhaps there is something close to home that may work for you.

RCI Point Chart

There is a lot more info on the members' website about these exchanges.

Otherwise, to get some value from those points you will have to rent reservations to others. If you don't want to do that yourself, the point brokers are a good option. David's (aka Daddio) is one of our board sponsors and has an excellent reputation with both owners and non-member guests. His website has more info - www.dvcrequest.com

Okay so one more question and I apologize in advance, can someone please tell me how David's rental works ???

You contact him that you have points you want to put up for rental. If he has someone interested, he will contact you and you make the reservation if you can find something that is open for the dates wanted at the resort wanted.

Go to his site, his info is very detailed about how it works.

You could do it yourself but with you still in the learning stages and it being so close to your expiration date for the points, he probably has a better chance of getting you matched to someone that needs them.

Just be aware that any time you set up a rental, ultimately you are responsible for their use of the facility.

since you waited till the last minute, you will almost certainly get less per pt in this case, but typically david will pay you $10/11 per pt to broker a rental of your pts to another individual.

Definitely contact David's to see if you can rent out the points. Because they expire so soon, you might ask about David's last minute specials -- basically he will send out a newsletter that would advertise your points for less, and you would get less for them, but some is better than none. Bargain minded renters would jump to rent short notice points for only $8-10 per point or so -- but after David gets his cut you might only get $5-7 per point. GL

I'm no expert but you could also post on the rent/trade board. Spring Break is starting and I would think someone would love for you to book a last minute trip. Those posts seem like they go fast.

based on the first post, i'm not sure the OP has the knowledge to do the rental themselves. an inexperienced renter plus an inexperienced rentee can easily result in a bad outcome. i think a broker is a better bet unless the OP wants to do a lot of homework in a short period of time on renting...

Thank you for all the responses! I have so much to learn about this !!!!

one concern i have: you do know that you can make a reservation before your UY arrives, right? (UY has nothing to do with booking.) your june 2013 and 2014 pts are available to make reservations right now.

just making sure.

David's website it very user friendly and it has all the info on it. Just google David's DVC and it will come up. While your points are expiring soon, there is no reason to let them go to waste. ANY $ amount is better than letting them expire.

I completely agree. I was just throwing that out there in case David's price was not what they were expecting. I know where I live, people make a lot of last minute trips for Spring Break. If David's can get anywhere close to 10 pp that would be the way to go. However, if David's can't, doing some serious research could put several hundred dollars in their pocket. There is a ton of information on the disboards.
