Can someone help me understand the difference between renting and transfering points. In what situations would you use what.
Thanks so much - For my next vacation I'll be needing more points than what I'll have to use.

They can be used interchangable depending on the use.

Renting points - Points can be rented by a DVC owner or non-dvc owner. Usually the person renting points makes a reservation for you.

Transferring points - thsi can only be done by a DVC owner to get points into your account for immediate use.

I prefer transferring points as this involved two DVC owners who are aware of the rules. I have alos rented points to non-DVC owners, but this requires more hand holding and answering questions.

Renting points: The DVC member makes a reservation with member services in the name of the person renting the points.

Transfering points: One DVC member transfers points to the account of another DVC member. The DVC member receiving the points makes their own reservation.

...AND the points are not supposed to have a cost connected to them.

Renting points is fine with Disney so that's not true.

I believe Diane is referring to transferring points. In the POS it says, in effect, that no money is to change hands when points are transferred from one member to another.

Another thing to consider is the fact that transfered points are in full control of the new owner, where as rented points continue to be in control of the original owner.

Per the POS:

"Club Members are expressly prohibited from receiving compensation for engaging in any Transfer activity."

You can only transfer points to another member. You are literally transferring points - they are no longer yours and the other member now controls them.

To be technical, there is no such thing as renting points. When "renting points" you always control your points. All you do is make a reservation for somebody - who can be either a member or a nonmember. We probably should have called this "renting a reservation" but the term renting points started getting used and has stuck.
