I ended up at AC Moore yesterday not being able to figure out what to buy to set eyelets and paper punches and sticker makers, brads, adhesives ARRHHGG...

I am so confused. Anybody have any advice on what to get? Sizes? Makes? Models?

I swear I stood there starring at this stuff for over an hour, and didn't buy any

TIA

Rhonda

I wish I could help!! But I'm in much the same boat as you.... have only been scrapbooking since sept and still a little in the world of lost. So I'll be watching this thread and hopefully Buffy and Lisa and all the others will come along.

I have found that I like the stampin up and fiskars punches even some of the dollar store ones.

For eyelets you need a Cropadile - pink or lime green, often comes with a case with some eyelets. they have just brought out a "big bite" with a 12" reach, but it costs more so as a beginner you might want to try the other first. Its easy to use and goes through thick stuff no problem - it also has 2 sizes of hole punch so its easy to make holes for bigger brads etc.

Other sort of punches just go for the shape you like!

Definitely the Crop-a-dile!!! It smooth, no noise and easy to use especially if you don't have a lot of strength in your hands.

The big thing I love about the CAD is that it will set the mickey head eyelets from WDW without ruining them. Most of the hammer style setters don't have a setter big enough and it chips the paint off the eyelet. And depending on what kind of metal the eyelet is made out of, it can be really hard to break the ring to set it.

here is a link to a youtube video that shows how it's done:

And yet another Crop-o-dile vote. I had a little trouble figuring out the best way to use it, but once I did, I am a happy camper!

I third (or fourth :rotfl2: ) getting a crop-a-dile!

For punches, I prefer Stampin Up and Creative Memories. You can't buy those in stores. But you could probably get some used ones on ebay if you wanted. Or go to their websites and find consultants. I wouldn't get to crazy with shapes though. I found out the only ones I use is square, circle and of course disney ones. I have a tag punch and a decorative ticket type one from stampin up that I just love too.

I personally love my hammer style eyelet setting too, but I like to take out my aggression occasionally on eyelets and it's very satisfying to bang the eyelets. :)

on another tool subject completely, I ADORE my xryron little X. it's awesome. :) you can run pretty much anything through it (ok, anything that is an inch wide or less) and presto it's sticky. :)

for brads, I have a giant thumbtack (just cause it's cute) and pierce the paper where I want to stick the brad, that way the brad goes right through and it's not getting all bent up as you are trying to shove it through paper. :) (a sewing needle works just as well, just not as "cute" :) ) maggie

For adhesives, I use Ziggy pens, Xyron and tombo runners. They are my favorite, but any type of runner will work. I will buy other brands if they are on sale. I used to use glue, but it makes the items wrinkle if the paper is thin.

I plan on getting the big CAD on non ban days, but for now I use a manual setter. I do not use a hammer. It is a little metal tool that almost looks like a shifter in a car. The first head (sort of like drill bits on a drill) is for the hole punching and then you manually put the eyelet through the hole then put another head on the gadget and turn the paper over and "set" the eyelet (so there is never any damage to the front of it). It is actually really easy to do, not so easy to explain. I started using this tool because it has another head to make long slices for ribbon to go through. It also has a head that cuts a half moon shape. I have yet to use that head.

As for the actual brads and eyelets and fiber and all the rest, that depends on the page you are doing. If you want to be a "real scrapper" you will buy all the ones that look nice regardless if you need them or not and then look at your credit card bill at the end of the year and :scared1: . Hence why most of us are on the ban.:rolleyes1

Ok crop a dile it is (especially if I can use my 40% off), thanks for the advice ie. strength in hands.

I am going to look into the Xyron, I have the laminator (LOVE IT).

Yipee:goodvibes

Where is everyone buying these?? I am on a budget right now so if there is somewhere cheap that always helps:thumbsup2

I got my CAD at Mike's with a 40% coupon. I think regular price is like $27 or so?

mostly the chain craft stores like Michaels or ACMoore. Not sure what you have in Alaska though. ETA: found 3 Michaels in Alaska, 2 in Anchorage, and 1 in Fairbanks.
Ummm, there are several online scrap sites that would have them. Here is the scrapjazz site but it looks like they are out.

I bought mine from Stampin Up! But I also saw the green one @ Costco yesterday with a ton of extra eyelets for $22.

For buying eyelets and brads I always hit the making memories sale. They have 100 eyelets for usually 80-90 cents. When it gets closer to the big sale I will post on here and if anyone wants them I will gladly pick them up and ship them to you.

The sale in the first week in April this year, and if anyone is close to utah you should hit that sale! :D

WOW. Sadly nowhere near Utah  but I'd gladly send you $$ for eyelets and postage

I saw the little CAD at Costco last week. Didn't buy it though, i am holding out for the big one!

I so need to change my signature. WE are in California now(military). But when we lived by Fairbanks we had Micheals and Joanns. I thought maybe this was a tool I needed to order.
Off to Joanns tomorrow.
:thumbsup2

I bought a crop a dile, the Xyron 2.5" sticker thing, brads, eyelets, paper, storage boxes, yippee - guess I should actually *start* scrappin' something.

I couldn't find a Ziggy glue pen anywhere though?

You won't need the pen until you are doing tiny pieces. Once you start doing those, then you'll need to find the pen. I think it is really call Zig-Memory System 2 way glue. It is a light blue color.
