Ok, so usually we will fly out of Philadelphia International since it is very close to my parent's place. However, this trip we will be flying out of Newark Liberty International instead since the flight times worked with our schedule a bit better. Our flight is at 6:20am (I know...) and we live about 1hr 45min from that airport. What time should we leave? Or how early should we get to Newark. It's the first flight on a Monday.

I'm not familiar with Newark, and I'm assuming you're not either. I would probably plan on arriving at least 2:30 before the flight. I'm pretty sure International flight check ins are earlier then domestic flights. That would mean arriving at 3:50AM :scared1:. I would allow at least two hours for driving, if not 2:15 (that allows for bathroom/snack stops and not leaving exactly when you want to). That would mean leaving the house between 1:35-1:50AM. I would then 'round down' and plan on leaving at 1:30AM.

Umm yea, arranging for a hotel nearby the night before sounds pretty good.

ETA: The following is United's suggestion for checking in for international flights:
When traveling internationally:

  • If you're not checking luggage, plan to arrive at the airport at least 180 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time.
  • If you are checking luggage, no plan to arrive at the airport at least 180 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time.

Are you traveling internationally? Or just referring to the airport as "Newark International".

If you are flying domestically from EWR, arriving 90 minutes before your flight will be fine. It is a large airport, so familiarize yourself with the parking situation and terminal maps before your trip. I agree that since you'll have to leave so early, you might want to look into a Park and Fly hotel and go the night before.

Usually fly out of PHL, 3 or 4 times from EWR. Newark itself confuses me and my GPS got 'lost' twice trying to get outta there. We've stayed at Wyndham Garden every time there, great shuttle service, safe park n fly deal, highly recommended by us.

I agree with finding a park and fly the night before. And I'd much rather take a quick hotel shuttle in the morning than try to navigate around a strange airport hunting for parking.

Ooof. This is gonna be rough. Good thing is, parking won't be an issue since my dad is going to drop us off (poor guy). If there are any fantastic hotel rates near Newark closer to the date of our vacation we will use that option. For now, it looks like the crack of dawn for us. Both my mom and I won't be out of work will about 7 the night before.

You have to watch because Mondays morning early is a big commuter day for people. I would get there 90 mins before to be comfortable. I've had a few case of security being in the 45 min range depending on what terminal you are going out of

Agree with 90 minutes but that's in the door of your terminal. EWR is a big airport and time to park your car and get to the terminal could be 30 minutes easily.
So 2 hrs drive plus 30 min parking plus 90 min advance = leave at 2:30am. Yikes.
