I've been meaning to post about my theatre weekend in New York last weekend, but have been too busy to do it until now! So, here goes:

On Saturday afternoon, we won $25 lottery seats for "Wicked"! We were in the second row! In Boston speak, Wicked was wicked awesome! It's a musical that tells the story of the Wicked Witch in "The Wizard of Oz." It fills in some of the blanks like how the Lion, the Tinman, and the Scarecrow ended up the way they did. The music is fantastic and the stage is incredible. The cast is amazing, especially Idina Menzel as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch), and Norbert Leo Butz as Fiyero. Joel Gray is great as the Wizard, and Kristen Chenoweth is hysterical as Glinda. There hasn't been a show that I wanted to go back and see right away, and tell others to go see this much in a long time! Look for this show to win a few Tony Awards in June!

On Saturday evening, dinner ran to late to squeeze in a trip to see my friend David in "42nd Street" (which is a great show that I've seen before), so I went to Don't Tell Mamas, a piano bar. As most folks around here know, I love Jellyrolls, so I was excited to be going to another piano bar. It was a big disappointment. Although the bar was packed, it just didn't have the energy of Jellyrolls. They don't even sing the entire night, and there was a long break at one point in the evening. I'll pass on that the next time I go to NY.

On Sunday afternoon, I went to see "Little Shop of Horrors." I had never even seen the movie, but I was familiar with some of the music. This was a very good show, but nothing spectacular. The puppetry of the plant was great, though. Hunter Foster was fantastic as Seymour. He has a great voice. At the end of the show, they were auctioning off an Audrey II music box for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Some guy bid on it, and his kid screamed, "Don't Even Think of it Dad." It was hysterical!

On Sunday evening, I went to see "Rent" for the billionth time. I won a front row $20 lottery ticket! I knew a few people in the show, so it was fun to see them onstage again, and they all did a fantastic job! I love the music and story of this show. It's just so inspiring for me. This is my favorite Broadway musical. It's just so incredibly moving. This show has really changed my life. I see bits and pieces of myself and my friends in the characters. I just really relate to this show.

I'm hoping to get back to New York again real soon. I love going to the theatre, and my theatre weekends in NY are always the best!

Do you mean that you were going to meet your friend there, or do you mean that your friend is actually in the show? If he is in the show, who did he play? I saw it a few months ago, and it was great.

I know David Elder, the actor who plays Billy Lawlor in "42nd Street." I met him on an Amtrak train a few years ago on my way home from NY. 500 people on the train, and I strike up a conversation with a Broadway actor.

I already paid them off. I'm safe, Jason. BTW, long quote.

Oh man, that sounds fun. I would love to do all that. I'm glad you had a great time.

YEEPS!! There are po-po's for that kind of thing?!?

Good Lord....I've had enough trouble beating the rap of being a thread killer....this will destroy my already-smeared reputation!! I better hit the tracks before they sniff out a couple of my posts!!

:moped:

PS - NY theater weekends rock...I got front row tickets to see Phantom (again) in a couple weeks for my birthday, and I can't WAIT!!

I'm jealous...I miss Broadway. But the ability to visit Jellyrolls whenever I want does make up for it a bit. LOL

Seriously though, if you'll be going back to NY soon, check out Toxic Audio in Loudmouth at the John Houseman. They're awesome people and awesome entertainers.

Now I'm the jealous one. I have to travel 1,100 miles to go to Jellyrolls! If you can go whenever you want, you should come on April 30th, when I'll be there with a few DISers.

Thanks for the info on Toxic Audio in Loudmouth. I'll have to check it out!
