hope I'm on the right board

we are thinking about a stop over in New york on our way home from Disney next year

What are the hotels like that you can use your points at
and would this be a good idea
only planning on staying 2 nights mid week

Just some info.....my Son stayed at the Plaza a few years back and he had to pay $50.00 for parking and if you took your car out and came back again....guess what???? another $50.00!! Talk about shell shock.

He did really love it though, but we never thought of the parking issue, so just wanted to give you a heads up....The plaza is no longer on the DVC list (I don't think) so hopefully you won't run into this.

Have a GREAT time!!!!

We have stayed at the Regency (not on points). Hotels don't get much nicer than the Regency. The Shelburne Murry Hill is also available on points. Can't tell you much about it since we haven't stayed there. Have fun in NYC.

Shelburne Murray Hill Site

Regency Site

The Regency is a top NYC hotel -- very deluxe. Located on the East Side (on Park Avenue) not far from Bloomingdale's and the shops of Madison Avenue.

The Shelburne Murray Hill is part of a local group of hotels that offer more of an "apartment" atmosphere. Still very nice and tends to get good reviews here on the DIS board. It's also on the East Side but more in the Midtown area. Not far from Grand Central.

Both hotels are good choices for visiting the sights of NYC. Shelburne is more economical than The Regency. My guess is you will have high parking fees and most likely a fee for internet connection at both hotels -- in fact, most hotels in NYC will have those fees.

Just saw the OP is coming from Ireland -- I would skip any thought of a rental car in NYC and rely on taxis, subways and what NYC is famous for --- walking!

I stayed in a two bedroom at the Shelburne Murray Hill this past summer. The hotel was lovely and VERY spacious. We were nine girls (it was a bachlorette party) and there was plenty of room for all of us. It was actually larger than my cousin's Manhattan apartment!! There was a kitchen, living room, dining room, two bathrooms and two bedrooms - very clean and the hotel was located in a very nice area of Manhattan. Have a wonderful time and welcome to the Big Apple!!

If you want to stay right on Broadway go to Novotel.com Ask for a room with a view on Broadway. My daughter really loved it. Great for picture taken at night with the lights of Broadway.

Also we have stayed at Helmsley Park Lane. Up around where the Plaza is or was. Across from Central Park.

And yes take a taxi, train, bus or plain walking in the city. Parking is sure expensive.

I am going to Ireland in the Summer of 07'. It has been many years since I was there. I heard it has changed alot. Looking forward to it.

Good luck.

Unfortunately the Plaza has closed, developers are transforming it into apartments that will be sold.

We stayed at the Shelburne Murray Hill on points this past summer....we tried for the Regency, but we couldn't get in. We go to NYC often, so I wanted to give trading out the points a try. I would definintely do it again. The Shelburne was in a more residential area, instead of touristy area, but was still close to Grand Central Station. We liked being away from the hustle and bustle of the Times Square area. there was a food store right around the corner, so you could pick up odds and ends to bring back to the room. The suite was small, but all NYC hotel rooms are. When you first walk in, to the left was a small galley type kitchen, to the left was the bathroom. The living room area had a pull out sofa and the bedroom was a nice size with a huge walk in closet....in fact the kids wanted to sleep in the closet!!!!
If you hve any other questions, please ask! Oh and trading there was very easy, made my decision and reservation with one phone call....but next time I hope to try for the Regency!!!!

Stay in the regency if you can. I'm from the NYC area originally and IMHO it's worth it to stay in the "better" area. Definetly worth the stop though, there is no where else like NY!;)
