So - After I have hated the thought of camping for many years, my DS8 looked at me with his puppy dog eyes and asked couldn't I please go with him and DH to his Cub Scouts camping trip. Of course I couldn't resist his cuteness and I went, dreading it for weeks. It was pretty primitive - terrible bathroom situations (my biggest gripe) - but guess what ?!?!? We had a great time :) My two DSs had such a blast and frankly, DH and I enjoyed it, too. The woods, the morning air, the campfire. Lets face it, its the stuff of some good family times:wizard: So now we are looking for some local sites (with nice facilities) to try over the summer ... and being the Disney nut that I am I am starting to think a lot about Fort Wilderness. DH has some vacations days the week of New Years and I see that value season starts the 1st of January. So I was thinking about maybe a four nighter at FW that week - 1/1 - 1/5. Its so inexpensive and the weather should be nice. What tips do you have for me? Can tents go on the preferred sites at FW or only the basic ones? Does anyone do that particular week at FW? I know that the parks will be mobbed, does FW get really crowded? Tell me everything - the good and the bad! Thanks in advance!;)

Ft Wilderness is a GREAT place to camp. I have camped there many times in early-mid December and the weather was nice in the day, but, cool at night (60s or 50s).

It's inexpensive and you can take a boat straight to the Magic Kingdom.

We have stayed in the Prefered Sites in the past, but, we are quite happy with the standard once. Make sure you learn all the short cuts around the resort. (Like the one that runs from the Group Site to the main road...we found a cut through from the 800 loop to the back of the Group Site...it was just a short walk to the main road and then on to a the Settlement.

Having only camped there at Christmas, the only time I noticed that it was crowded was when the Pop Warner kids were there. We arrived as they were leaving and it was like night and day. Mob scene to Ghost Town in about two hours. We had no near neighbors for about 3 days.

Make sure you get your tickets for the Hoop-de-Doo!

I am still very curios about New Years!! I am thinking of going and not do any of the parks get hang around Ft Wilderness, but Iwas wondering how that was.

Thanks for you imput.

That time of year you certainly wont be the only ones staying at the Fort and not doing the parks . Its a great time just to relax

We have camped MLK weekend in January for probably the last ten years in a row. It can get cold (30's and 40's at night) in January, so I would suggest a small electric space heater for your tent, and make sure that you have warm enough sleeping bags. Hopefully, you will luck out and the weather will be great. It was this past (2007) MLK weekend. I didn't even have to wear a jacket the entire weekend (t-shirts and shorts only), and we never had to use the heat in the camper.

But, since you are raising Boy Scouts, you know that you should BE PREPARED!
