Duckie you will get to meet John the Penguin at the Expo at the marathon weekend. He is a cool dude. Hey Robert, shall we invite him for beer at the Big River next year?

That's what I got from Bingham's book--too much, too soon (I am one of those Type A people he talks about-when I decide to do something, I go overboard). It's good to know so many people found the advice not only helpful but worth using as a primary guide.
Duckie

I have ordered the book and am looking forward to reading it. I think I've been pushing myself too fast (having hip and ankle pain), so following a plan out of this book should be helpful.

I'm doing the Minnie and hope you will be able to work it out too.

Duckie and Kathy, hope to see you both at the Minnie! I often feel I don't train as much as I should, so I kind of admire your zeal, but I do want you to take care. The trick is pushing just enough for improvement, but not too much to do damage. It's a real balancing act! I love the Penguin too.

Dave, you gotta have goals, man, or nothing gets done. Good for you for going for the Sr Games medals!

Maria, like you, results from eating well always seem to come slowly for me. (Truth be told, in my case, I'm sure it is my on-again, off-again "eating well" that makes for my slow changes. :sad2: ) Good for you for making those positive changes and sticking to them!

Today is going to be my long walk day. Yesterday I spent most of the day planning for my Minnie trip with my girls. Like most Moms of teenaged girls, I find we are often at odds -- They get along much better with Dad right now, while Mom is typically not hip enough, or is too strict, or is just plain clueless in their estimation -- so, it was fun to focus on what we do still have in common -- a love of Disney -- and plan special meals and surprises to celebrate their "Sweet 16" birthday at Disney (which happens just before the Minnie). I visited the Disboards special thread on Disney birthdays, called the "cake order hotline" (Did you know Disney had one of those now????), planned meals at places that could accommodate a special dessert for them (not just the standard cupcake -- because 16 for a girl is really a special birthday, I think), and looked through the Disney Outlet and EBAY for anything cool I could use in a gift basket that I could smuggle into my luggage for them. I still have a lot of loose ends to follow up on, but at least I've got things in progress. Of course, the clincher would be if we got to go to Disneyland in September -- that would be a fabulous present to surprise them with. But if that doesn't work out, at least they will have been doted on at Disney for one weekend.

Keep on truckin', gang!

Sounds like a plan. Remember the movie "Dumb and Dumber"? I love the part with them leaving 'Sea Bass' with the check.

Hummm He might even suggest beer laps in his next book.

Dave- He goes to the marathon? So cool! It'll almost be like I'm a real athlete!

Sam, the book is great. I read all but the race and post-race chapters last night. :rolleyes1 And I am still trying to figure out how to afford the Minnie.... I think I have an idea. :thumbsup2

Wendy, I would LOVE to do the Minnie with TEAMMATES! As it is, I walk around thinking about my "imaginary friends" working out with me so I don't feel so foolish....

BTW, Wendy, I went to WDW for my 16th birthday. My "cake" consisted of a Twinkie on the airplane--my parents' response was that I was going to Disney World! (We'll ignore, for the moment, that my brother ALSO got to go to Disney World, and for his birthday 3 weeks later, he still got a cake....) (I'm letting it go, I'm letting it go) :rotfl:

I think it's great that you're taking so much time making their day special. And the mother-daughter thing gets better. :)

Oh, my, look at the new Bingham schedule--today is rest day! Woohoo! I can catch up on laundry!

Nice surprise this morning when I went to leave for my "long walk" of the week - a walk at the mall as the wind chill here is below zero :scared1:

My DH suited up and said he'd like to join my sister and I :woohoo:
He stayed with us for 2 miles and then hung out in the empty food court watching the big screen tvs while we finished. I was sooo excited to have him moving. :lovestruc

Exercise has not been his friend and I don't want to be a nag, so I simply tell him when and where I am going.

We have been really working together on his diet over the past few weeks to help him lose some weight. He is down over 10 lbs and is already starting to feel better  He would eventually like to lose a total of 40 lbs, so we feel like we are really and truly on our way. Today's walk and the finished "workout" space are new turning points for him.

Yesterday I put the finishing touches on transforming our old "playroom" into a new "workout" space and we are both very happy. We have a treadmill and recumbent bike set up along with a tv and sound system and dvd player. I have a place to lay out my floor mat and do my stretching and core work. Yesterday was final clean up and "decorating" - my finishers poster from the Chicago Half Marathon, some Disney and Ohio State posters are a nice change down there.

The rest of the day is boring stuff like laundry, but I feel very self righteous as my workout is already done. :cutie:

Hey all! I haven't been to this "new" walking thread yet. Life (and work) gets in the way! :(

Will JB be at the marathon next year? He wasn't there this past year. I think he was at the RnR marathon in Phoenix. Now that they are on separate weekends again, hopefully we will see him at Disney. Of course, I'm still deciding between Disney and RnR Phoenix. Actually, I think Disney will win out....and it's all because of WISH. :goodvibes

Duckie - I think that JB's plans works especially well for those with little exercise/running/walking background. Even though Hal Higdons plans are for novices, I really think they can be too aggressive for most not having the preferred background of having some walking or exercise program in place for a while before starting in on the training. As Robert has often stated to many of us in training, it's better to be under-trained than over-trained. You want to arrive at the start line healthy. Just my .02 cents.

Kathy - sounds like a great exercise room. I wish I had a room like that.

steffwalks - I'm having trouble getting myself motivated to train for the OKC half. Gotta keep moving, gotta keep moving. Of course, the exercise challenge has helped tremendously (thanks, DAVE!) but my work is wearing me down....not the teaching part but everything else that comes with it. Maybe I'll feel better in about a few weeks after some key projects are finished. Ugh!

Wendy - sounds like the Minnie weekend will be a lot of fun for your girls. They are lucky to have such a great mom!

I think that is an important way of cross training. It takes balance and strength not to spill:rotfl2:

Susie--- So glad you are safe. Were you affected by the tornado's that were in your state? I having trouble keeping up with everything so if you posted it somewhere else about it, just direct me to it.

I'm sorry I haven't posted much here lately. Hope everyone is doing well.

I am loving the challenge, it is making me do more cross training than what I have done in the past which should be a good thing. Thanks again Dave for getting it started.

Someone asked about where to get the X Static sock. I have not had to buy them yet since I was given 2 pairs but after googling for them I found the ones that I have. Here is the link

Got to get dinner on the table.

Weather started out decent this morning, so I took dogs for a walk while Scott went running. It was good to get out, the wind has been terrible. Of course, as usual, the wind did pick up while we were out, but not as bad as it has been! Thanks, Dave, for the challenge, it gets us out on weekends that are usually just for construction projects!

Hey, all.... Another silly question here...

Bingham's book refers to strength training as a type of cross training. Does this mean that if the training plan says "40 minutes XT" I should do 40 minutes total, or 40 minutes of cycling, for example, and then do the strength training? :confused3 I'm taking the warning not to get too overzealous to heart--I really don't want to hurt myself. At the same time, if the cardio cross training and the strength training aren't overdoing it, i would like to do both....

Ideas?

One more question: The week my training plan says to run 10 miles, can I do a ten mile race? or is that pushing it? Just curious!

Are you going to run ten miles or walk ten miles?

One of the best racewalkers in the world, Dave McGovern, says this about crosstraining:

If you are walker then train to improve your walking with your cross training. If you train racewalking, then the best cross training is regular brisk walking or hiking. Stretching is also required to be a strong walker.

A walker uses more of their body in walking than a runner does running. A runner runs by pumping the legs up and down. A proper walk stride uses all the leg muscles as well as the core muscles and the arms.

Susie: glad to have you back and glad everything was OK with you.

Duckie: I agree with what others have said about JB's plan. He advocates alot less mileage than most other plans, but as someone said, it works if you want to train and still have a life. Keep in mind that a person who runs can cover the mileage so much quicker than those of us who walk. That's why he has separate plans for runners, r/w'ers, w/r'ers and just plan walkers. I found his plan to be very doable, although very time-consuming at the end. I know other plans would be much harder for me. I used Wendy Baumgarten's online plan for the half, but I think it would have been way too much for me for the full. I also think the high amount of XT that JB recommends is a good way to keep things from getting too monotonous.
To answer your second question, I think 40 min of XT is 40 min total, not 40 minutes of each.

Nancy: how ya doing? I saw Fran last night and she was all excited about both swimming with the dolpins and ziplining! I think we'll definitely be able to do at least one of the 2.......even though all the guys are chicken! I am working on a zillion diffrent things right now, but you and I need to do some serious planning. Sorry, wrong thread, but as my kids say...***!

Panda, holy cow! I'd be walking ten miles! I don't run! I checked the schedule again, and I'm actually supposed to walk ten miles in training the week BEFORE the 10m event.

Is that a yes or a no, Wise Panda? I was intrigued by the special anniversary medal for finishers, so I don't trust myself on this one. I am distracted by shiny things.

Jeanne, thanks! I was hoping it was both, but I'll split my time this week. I wanted to take the pilates class tomorrow, too...

The Baumgardner plan piled up a lot of miles quickly--a lot more than JB's plan, also. I was looking at that plan first, switched to Higdon, and now I think I'm settled on the Penguin walk-only training plan.

Duckie, please tell us a short bio of where you are right now as an athlete? Your age, physical condition ect. How much exercise are you doing now and for how long have you been exercising.

Have you been fitted for shoes at a good running/walking store? Do you have clothes that work goos for you and don't cause any chaffing?

How far is the longest regular walk you are doing now?

We registered on line yesterday for the 2009 WDW Marathon. Erica said she couldn't find where to register for the 5K that's the same weekend. Can someone put a link up for her.

Oh, they won't be with me except for non-race times at Disney! I may get one daughter to do the 5K, but the other is so highly competitive that she refuses to run because there is no chance she can win. That's about as far from my life philosophy as you can get! :rotfl2: They love doing the Danskin Tri (because they are both swimmers) but they don't care for running, which is OK because we still eat together and ride together, so it can still be Mom/Daughter time.

Susie -- Good to hear from you! I hear you about "Life happening"!

Jeanne -- I missed it! Where are you going swimming with the dolpins and ziplining?????
