People who have DVC points that they can't/don't use will sell you enough points for your stay - the price is negotiable between the two of you but the average seems to be around $10-$11 a point. If you are not an owner, the reservation etc needs to be made by the owner and then transferred into your name once the payment etc is worked out. The resorts are really nice where you can stay so good luck!!
For new renters they should know the best way to get a room at a discount is plan as far ahead as possible. DVC rooms are different than regular Disney rooms. DVC rooms are owned by their members and there are fewer of them. I have worked with several renters and they are surprised that several of the resorts have no 2 bedrooms available for April or May.
