New to renting points and confused! Help?

I am new to the whole idea of renting points from DVC members. I have read what I could find on the subject but am still confused. Can you rent points and use them only for certain resorts? What is the best way to go about renting them? In what situations is renting points worthwhile? I am a little overwhelmed. Any advice is welcomed.

Renting points is a great idea,we purchased points for the 2nd time,and will be staying at OKW from November 6-18th.That's the best value for your money,and a very nice place to stay.
