New Star Wars Movie Slated for Late 2015 Release

Certainly seems an odd choice.

All of the original trilogy films were initially released the final weekend in May.
All of the prequel trilogy films were initially released the 2nd weekend in May.

I could see them deviating into June, but Q4?

I agree is strange and a break from tradition. Disney was already operating on a tight time line. I thought May 2015 was ambitious but doable. The change in the writing staff must have ate up most of their margin for error. I am surprised they are not doing a 2016 release anyways. They have more time to get the series relaunched and there's less block busters slated for that summer. If they do that now its just going to tick fans off who are already anxious for the new movie.

Christmas movies are doing much better in comparison to summer releases.

less competition and people will go anytime.

I never really understood the summer blockbuster anyway...as there is a million more things to do. I guess that was reflective of the school calendar...but its not like the kiddies are going to be in bed at 7 pm anymore

You also have two long weekends in the summer. That makes it easier for couples to go out. I agree a Christmas release would be better. LOTR and Harry Potter proved that block buster movies can do just fine with winter releases. Plus it doesn't have to compete with Avengers 2, Jurassic Park 4, and what ever other sequel the studios are pumping out that summer.

if im not mistaken most summer movie /blockbusters that are big hits hit big quickly and go away quickly...Christmas movies dont have the huge numbers early but last a while longer

Just announced on the Star Wars home page. 12/18/2015

Honestly...it will do better this way...especially from a merchandising prospective.

Santa clause will be hauling alot of that stuff around because everyone will "assume" the movie will be good and there will be no way to validate that before 12/25

...just like may 1999

Hey Iger...DON'T violate my faith on this :(
